Brochure Download 2021 ANDERS ZOUSTAR TRAPEZE ARTIST WRITTEN BY ZOUSAIN SUPIDO YOUR SONG STRATUM STAR OUTREACH VALLEY OF CHAMPIONS As we approach the start of the 2021 breeding season, Widden Stud has never looked better with our picturesque valley now a landscape of emerald green, having recovered completely from the ravages of drought and fire. The rich fertility and resilience of this land has underpinned the success of Widden Stud through seven generations of the Thompson family and we’ve now seen firsthand it’s capacity to overcome even the most extreme adversity. The economic uncertainty arising from the pandemic last year has given way to a noticeably improved mindset, with record results at Australian yearling sales buoying confidence and setting the tone for a fruitful stud season. Widden Stud have taken this opportunity to expand our historic brand into the Victorian marketplace as we embark on a new venture at the previous home of Sun Stud, our first step of this kind outside of New South Wales. Established Group 1 sires Nicconi and Star Witness have both relocated to Widden Stud Victoria and will be joined by two exciting new sires in dual Group 1 winner Russian Camelot (IRE) and blue-blooded sprinter Doubtland, a $1.1 million son of Not A Single Doubt. Bringing fresh blood into the Widden Valley is explosive sprinter Anders, the second son of outstanding sire Not A Single Doubt to join our roster this year. The full potential of Not A Single Doubt as a sire of sires is yet to be tapped and we believe that both of Widden’s new acquisitions will contribute to building his legacy. Our combination of proven sires and promising new stallions is a tribute to progressive thinking and a dynamic team. TEAM TRIUMPHS 2021 has brought a new round of success for Widden Stud with record- breaking results in the sales ring providing outstanding returns for our many happy clients. Widden Stud has sold just over 100 yearlings at Australia’s major sales this year for an aggregate in excess of $23 million, rewarding the hard work and patience of our dedicated staff and the loyalty of our supporters time and time again. We were the second leading vendor by aggregate at Magic Millions, selling 37 yearlings for $11.7 million at an average $316,216, and had the distinction of selling the highest-priced yearling on the Gold Coast in 2021. Our Snitzel colt from Bonny O’Reilly topped the sale when he fetched $1.9 million to the bid of Tom Magnier and our Zoustar colt from Fuddle Dee Duddle realised $1 million when he was knocked down to Victorian Alliance, Suman Hedge Bloodstock and David Redvers Bloodstock. The elite marketplace of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale also delivered impressive returns with Widden selling 22 yearlings for $7.72 million at an average of $350,909. The most popular of these were two exceptional yearlings that both sold for $1.25 million – a Zoustar colt from Lady Jivago and an I Am Invincible filly from Vezalay – with the dynamic duo purchased by Matt Laurie Racing and Coolmore/ Hermitage. Auction results and racetrack success tend to go hand-in-hand and the systems we have developed and implemented over many years at Widden Stud continue to deliver the quality outcomes we as breeders strive to achieve. SINCE 1867 While the history of Widden Stud is already etched in stone, the future offers a wealth of opportunity as we continually seek to improve and enhance one of the world’s greatest thoroughbred breeding farms. Geography and mother nature have bestowed tremendous natural gifts upon Widden, providing a unique environment for the development of young thoroughbreds. Located on 9000 acres of spectacular horse country in the Widden Valley, our farm features rich alluvial creek flats sheltered by magnificent sandstone cliffs providing pristine and tranquil surrounds. Being endowed as we are with resources of this quality, our clients know that their horses are receiving only the best that mother nature has to offer, demonstrated by the impeccable results stemming from a Widden upbringing. The long list of Stakes winners born and raised in these paddocks goes back more than a century, with modern day champions such as Australian Horse of the Year Dissident and Champion 3YO Sunlight supplementing the ranks of these luminaries in recent years. Australian Racing Fact Book A Guide to the Racing Industry in Australia 2000 - 2001 Published by the Australian Racing Board December 2001 1 Although every effort has been made to ensure the information provided in the Australian Racing Fact Book, this publication may contain inaccuracies or typographical errors. The Australian Racing Board assumes no responsibility for any such inaccuracies, errors or omissions in this publication or in other documents referred to within the publication. We would appreciate being notified of any errors that are discovered. 2 FForewordoreword The Australian Racing Board is pleased to introduce the third edition of The Australian Racing Fact Book, our annual reference guide to the Australian thoroughbred racing industry. In a few years we will celebrate the bicentenary of racing in Australia. In the almost 200 years since its beginnings, a three day meeting held in Hyde Park in 1810, Australian racing has become not only one of this nation's best loved sports but also a major component of the economy. By 2001 thoroughbred racing has grown to become an industry that generates a gross economic impact of $7.74 billion, and provides work, directly and indirectly, for 249,000 people. When you bear this in mind it is only to be expected that there is keen interest, from both within the industry and more generally, in records relating to the health and performance of the Australian thoroughbred racing industry. Our intention in producing the Fact Book is to meet this demand by assembling a range of useful facts and figures as a handy guide to any person seeking information on major aspects of the industry.
