If that was confirmed then we wouldn’t be able to interview him. So we decided to visit the Ciudad Deportiva where he works these days on the Track and Field Federation’s Technical Commission and as the Vice President of the Cuban Athletic Commission. Standing at the center’s door, we started to talk about if during this new Olympic cycle there would be a high- jumper who would go higher than the actual world’s record of 2.45 meters (for 25 years it has had Sotomayor’s name of it and a rumor was going around that the record would be broken at the Rio Olympics). One of the center’s employees came up to us saying: “Why don’t you ask him yourselves? He’s coming out of a meeting with retired athletes right now.” He pointed over to the right. Indeed, there he was, wearing a shirt and slacks and a grey jacket, surrounded by other athletes …he was walking over to his car. We ran up to him, with all the speed we could muster, and blurted out: “Soto, we want to interview you!” THE MEETING After several days of talking about where the best place to talk to our idol would be, we agreed that it should be the emblematic statue of Christ of Havana. Here were the reasons: The capital city lay at our feet and the blue sky was just a bit closer, good folk to accompany us there, a possible visit to the lovely town of Casablanca overlooking the bay to arrive at the Avenida del Puerto… FEB 2017 9 lahabana. com magazine Even though the meeting was set for nine in the morning, it didn’t happen until 10 minutes later because Sotomayor’s work schedule held him up and we were stuck in a traffic jam for several minutes in the municipality of Calabazar and so we were late in arriving. When he arrived, Javier made the most of the moment to pull out his cell phone and take some pictures of the lovely view and to tell us some stories about athletic fields around the year 1993. Sitting down with the city behind him, the interview began. In this new Olympic cycle, do you think your record will be broken? I saw high-jumpers who were capable of breaking my record during the past cycle. Two athletes stood out in the 2013-2014 seasons. It was the case of Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Ukrainian Bohdan Bondarenko. I set a term of up to 2016 for them to break it, but it didn’t happen and I can’t promise you that it will be either of them who will be able to do it now. These days it’s really hard to be at that top competitive level for so long. You can be clearing 2.20m or 2.30m quite regularly, but it’s really difficult to maintain over 2.40m or 2.43mseason after season. In this season there will be others who can deal with the 2.45m mark, but right now I don’t know who they are. APR 2017 10 lahabana. com magazine What’s the high-jump movement like right now in Cuba? Felipe Zayas is the best athlete we have now. He was the junior world champ but this year didn’t start too well for him. He does have a strong point and that’s his speed during the impulse run, which he has to coordinate at the moment of the jump. I think it would be beneficial for him to run faster because it would help his takeoff. I think he could jump 2.30m or higher JAVIER SOTOMAYOR: THE BEST HIGH-JUMPER EVER The height of the lintel of the entrance doorway to the sports museum of Lausanne Switzerland is 2.45m. The executive of the International Olympic Committee wanted to pay tribute to Sotomayor’s jump in Salamanca, Spain during the outdoor season of 1993. Since then, many analysts have been rushing to forecast the possibility of another athlete breakinga that record in the 21st century. Clearly, they could have had other doorways made with specific heights because Javier’s file contains other indoor records: Worlds (2.43 in Budapest, Hungary 1989), Pan- American (2.40 in Mar del Plata, Argentina 1995) and Central American/Caribbean (2.37 in Maracaibo,Venezuela 1998). APR 2017 11 lahabana. com magazine In 1982 at the age of 15, he set the record at the student national games with 2.00m. The next year at a newer version of the same annual competition he cleared the bar set at 2.30m and added another record. On September 8, 1988, when he was just 20 years old, Sotomayor joined the elite track and field ranks because at the Gran Premio Diputación of Salamanca, Spain, he passed the world record by one centimeter (2.42) that had been set by Patrik Sjöberg of Sweden.

A la luz de esta premisa, este artículo analiza el derrotero de las prácticas de semiesclavitud, violencia, fraude, súper explotación laboral y recorte y avasa- llamiento de derechos sufridas por los cosecheros de yerba mate de las provincias de Misiones y Corrientes (Argentina) desde la segunda mitad del siglo XIX hasta la actualidad. Se consi- deraron cinco categorías de análisis: regímenes de reclutamiento, precarización y disciplina laboral ligados a los procesos de violación o pérdida de derechos; intensidad y duración de la jornada de trabajo; salarios y fraudes; trabajo infantil y desposesión del derecho a la salud; y connivencia estatal. Los resultados muestran que las formas pretéritas de explotación laboral de la actividad no configuraron solo mecanismos iniciales de la acumulación capitalista regional, sino que se reorganizaron para convertirse en rasgos estructurales de un modelo secular donde las relaciones entre capital y trabajo se basan primordialmente en el despojo.

    Rubén Blades Rubén Blades Bellido de Luna (born July 16, 1948), professionally known as Rubén Blades (Spanish pronunciation: [ruˈβen ˈblaðes], but [ˈbleðz] in Panama and within the family[1]), is a Panamanian salsa singer, songwriter, actor, Latin jazz musician, and activist, performing musically most often in the Afro-Cuban and Latin jazz genres. As songwriter, Blades brought the lyrical sophistication of Central American nueva canción and Cuban nueva trova as well as experimental tempos and politically inspired Nuyorican salsa to his music, creating thinking persons’ (salsa) dance music. Blades has composed dozens of musical hits, the most famous of which is “Pedro Navaja,” a song about a neighborhood thug who appears to die during a robbery (his song “Sorpresas” continues the story), inspired by “Mack the Knife.” He also composed and sings “Patria” (Fatherland), which many Panamanians consider their second national anthem. He is an icon in Panama and is much admired throughout Latin America and Spain, and managed to attract 18% of the vote in his failed attempt to win the Panamanian presidency in 1994. In September 2004, he was appointed minister of tourism by Panamanian president Martín Torrijos for a five-year term. He holds a Licenciado en Derecho law degree from the University of Panama and an LL.M in International Law from Harvard University. He is married to singer Luba Mason. Family history and early life Blades was born in Panama City, Panama, the son of Cuban musician and actress Anoland Díaz (real surname Bellido de Luna), and Colombian Rubén Darío Blades, Sr., a gifted athlete, percussionist and later a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics in Washington, DC.

Este 2017 celebramos los 100 años del nacimiento de la que es una de las más grandes creadoras de nuestro país, Violeta Parra. Uno de los desafíos que nos hemos propuesto en este año de homenaje a la artista es visibilizar y difundir su figura y obra en todo el país. Serán más de 350 actividades culturales que se desarrollarán en todos los rincones de Chile, para que muchos más chilenos y chilenas tengan la oportunidad de celebrar a este gran icono de nuestra cultura. Castagnino La vuelta de Martin Fierro Cuatro palabras de conversación con los lectores Entrego a la benevolencia pública, con el título LA VUELTA DE MARTIN FIERRO, la segunda parte de una obra que ha tenido una acogida tan generosa, que en seis años se han repetido once ediciones con un total de cuarenta y ocho mil ejemplares. Esto no es vanidad de autor, porque no rindo tributo a esa falsa diosa; ni bombo de editor, porque no lo he sido nunca de mis humildes producciones. Es un recuerdo oportuno para explicar por qué el primer tiraje del presente libro consta de 20000 ejemplares, divididos en cinco secciones o ediciones de 4000 números cada una; y agregaré que confío en que el acreditado Establecimiento Tipográfico del señor Coni hara una impresión esmerada, como las que tienen todos los libros que salen de sus talleres. Lleva también diez ilustraciones incorporadas en el texto, y creo que en los dominios de la literatura es la primera vez que una obra sale de las prensas nacionales con esta mejora. Así se empieza. Las láminas han sido dibujadas y calcadas en la piedra por don Carlos Clerice, artista compatriota que llegará a ser notable en su ramo, porque es joven, tiene escuela, sentimiento artístico y amor al trabajo. El grabado ha sido ejecutado por el señor Supot, que posee el arte, nuevo y poco generalizado todavía entre nosotros, de fijar en láminas metálicas lo que la habilidad del litógrafo ha calcado en la piedra, creando o imaginando posiciones que interpretan con claridad y sentimiento la escena descripta en el verso.

Zumba in the Circuit was launched at the 2010 Zumba Convention in Orlando and at Curves conventions around the world for the first time in 2010. What is a ZIC Class? In this 30-60 minute workout, participants move around the circuit, changing stations every 60 seconds from strength training exercises to dancing in between stations. The ZIN member leads the class in the center of the circuit, encouraging participants on both the machines, and dancing. It is challenging to direct participants to change stations on the 60 second cues and teach choreography, but ZIC is a fabulous way for new instructors to hone their teaching skills and for seasoned instructors who don’t want to worry about too much choreography.
