FROM THE CHOIR LOFT BY JOACHIM WYSLUTSKY, CHOIR DIRECTOR Sing praises to our God, sing praises! Sing praises to our King, sing Praises! (Psalm 47:6)

This psalm verse, also commonly heard as the Tone 3 Resurrectional Prokeimenon, is written in the iconography above the choir loft. We know from this we are called to praise God with our voices, but why is it important to sing in church?

Mother Christophora of Holy Transfiguration Monastery, on one of my many visits there, referred to the service of singing in the church as three times prayer. The first part is the prayer of the hymns, or responses that are being offered are at their very core. The second, is the leading of the people of the church in prayer as you sing. The third, is an unconscious sacrifice that many singers don’t even think about as they are performing it, the sacrifice of their own prayer.

When you are singing in church, your duty is not to focus on your prayer but focus on the music and words of the hymn in order to make sure the message is conveyed clearly to the church as a whole. We give ourselves as a tool, vessel, or instrument to others prayer so that they can participate fully in the service and be fully immersed in the heavenly kingdom which the Divine Services bring us to at the priest’s speaking of “Blessed is the Kingdom…”. This sacrifice is what makes singing in the church so important, and it takes all of us, the entire body of Christ, the church. So, the next time you are in church consider coming up stairs and joining us.

August 2018 9 STORIES FROM CHURCH CAMP SUMMER CAMP AT ST. VLAD’S

As many of you may know, our parish helps defray the cost of sending our own youth to St. Vladimir’s Summer Church Camp each year, by covering half of the weekly tuition for each child. By doing this, we hope we can allow more of the youth to experience a christian-based summer camp, run by our own Decaon Daniel & Matushka Catrina Kovalak. Now that all three weeks have wrapped up, here are a few short stories that were submitted from the past month. This year, our parish helped cover the cost for over 25 of our own campers, and a number of them stayed for more than one week!

“This year I went to St. Vlad’s Summer Camp for two weeks. It is a chance to meet up with friends and have fun. My favorite parts of camp are the party and Chapel. I like the party because you get to dance with friends. I like Chapel because everything in it is beautiful. The singing and worshiping God is my favorite part of Chapel. I would like to thank the Kovalaks and the Church for making this all possible.” Lindsey Kirsh

““I went to Saint Vladimir’s Summer Camp for two weeks. I had a lot of fun and I want to again next year. I made a lot of friends that I miss already. It felt great to connect with other Orthodox Christian teens. I want to thank Deacon Dan and Matushka Catrina, the counselors, the Church, and God for that experience.” Erika Kirsh

“I went to Saint Vladimir’s Camp for two weeks. It was my first year at camp. My ” favorite part about camp was basketball day, because I love basketball. I got to hang out with my friends, and the food was good, too. I served at chapel time once.” Max Kirsh

““I went to Saint Vladimir’s Camp for one week. It was amazing! Everyone was so nice. Ines is my new best friend, and she is the nicest out of all of them. The food is amazing, especially the canteen snacks, because it’s candy. My mom doesn’t let me have candy. Matushka Catrina took care of me. God is awesome! By the way, I wrote this. My name’s Heidi.” Heidi Kirsh

“We liked church camp a lot! At first we were homesick but then sad it was over so ” fast. We liked fun with father and playing capture the flag the most! We got to be with our cousin Joey all week. We made a lot of new friends. We can’t wait to go to church camp next year! We also got to serve at Chapel time!” “ David & Tommy Visocky
