ABSTRACT There has been a diversity of televisión series on American TV throughout the years that feature known detectives. Monk has appeared more recently, and is the focus of this research, a program that presents a detective that resembles the classics. Drawing from the field of comparative literature, we examine the characteristics of the detective classic formula, against the innovations introduced by Dashiel Hammet in the novel The Maltese Falcon, especially in regards to the protagonist, Sam Spade; we also attempt to establish the extent to which Monk could be considered as the typical frontier hero. We base part of our hypothesis on Hernández Marín’s “stability principle”, according to which the readers/spectators transfers their generic expectations to other texts. Thus, the prototype of detective presented by Hammet is a point of reference to describe the TV show Monk in the following aspects: (a) the purpose of the show; (b) the type of story-line; (c) the type of crime committed; and (d) how characters are featured. This offers insights on why this TV series has become so popular. KEY WORDS: Comparative Literature; Frontier Hero; Detective. It’s a jungle out there Disorder and confusion everywhere No one seems to care Well I do. Hey, who’s in charge here? It’s a jungle out there Poison in the very air we breathe Do you know what’s in the water that you drink? Well, I do, and it’s amazing People think I’m crazy, ‘cause I worry all the time If you paid attention, you’d be worried too. You better pay attention Or this world we love so much might just kill you I could be wrong now, but I don’t think so. It’s a jungle out there …

  • MASS TOURISM and the MEDITERRANEAN MONK SEAL
MASS TOURISM and the MEDITERRANEAN MONK SEAL The role of mass tourism in the decline and possible future extinction of Europe’s most endangered marine mammal, Monachus monachus William M. Johnson & David M. Lavigne International Marine Mammal Association 1474 Gordon Street, Guelph, Ontario, Canada N1L 1C8 ABSTRACT Mass tourism has been implicated in the decline of the Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) since the 1970s, when scientists first began reviewing the global status of the species. Since then, the scientific literature, recognising the inexorable process of disturbance and loss of habitat that this economic and social activity has produced along extensive stretches of Mediterranean coastline, has consistently identified tourism as among the most significant causes of decline affecting this critically-endangered species. Despite apparent consensus on this point, no serious attempt has been made to assess the tourist industry’s role, or to acknowledge and discuss its moral and financial responsibility, in the continuing decline and possible future extinction of M. monachus. In view of this, The Monachus Guardian 2 (2) November 1999 1 we undertook a review of existing literature to identify specific areas in which tourism has impacted the Mediterranean monk seal. Our results provide compelling evidence that mass tourism has indeed played a major role in the extirpation of the monk seal in several European countries, that it continues to act as a significant force of extinction in the last Mediterranean strongholds of the species, and that the industry exerts a generally negative influence on the design and operation of protected areas in coastal marine habitats. There are compelling reasons to conclude that unless the tourist industry can be persuaded to become an active and constructive partner in monk seal conservation initiatives, it will eventually ensure the extinction of the remaining monk seals in the Mediterranean.

THE MIDNIGHT ASSASSIN : OR CONFESSION OF THE MONK RINALDI ----- BEFORE entering at large into our history, it will be necessary to say a few words on the manner by which it was obtained.—Some English gentlemen happening to make an excursion not far from the environs of Naples, about forty years ago, beheld a magnificent portico, the beauty of which led them to investigate the interior of the building; the church was called Santa Maria del Pianto, a very antient convent of the Black Crucifix. While standing at the portico, a person, impressive in his appearance, and lost in his own reflections, startled by the sound of their steps, quickly stole towards a door of the building, and disappeared. His tall thin figure, pale complexion, ferocious eye, and face half concealed under a long cloke, excited their attention, and, on entering the church, nobody was to be seen but a friar, who come from an adjoining convent to answer the questions of inquisitive strangers.

I 7 Thomas Merton and the Stranger LAWRENCE S. CUNNINGHAM Make the stranger welcome and say something useful. Evagrius Ponticus, On Asceticism and Stillness You are longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God. Ephesians 2: I 9 AD THOMAS MERTON LIVED TO EDIT HIS JOURNALS COMPILED DURING H his fateful pilgrimage to Asia I am reasonably certain he would not have called the fmished product An Asian Journal. I say that with some confidence because Merton had a near genius for crafting brilliantly evocative titles for his books. Those titles almost always made a strategic, if sometimes, subtle point. In the case of The Seven Storey Mountain it was the strategy of allusion to that most monastic can tica of Dante's Commedia with its purgatorial cleansing of the seven deadly sins (or, more properly, the eight logismoi described and analyzed by Evagrius of Pontus and John Cassian) accompanied by an increas ing shedding of the pondus of those sins until one was ready to enter the edenic happiness of the earthly paradise-the symbol of the monastic life as the paradisus claustraJis. Merton's title, in short, made a dense allusion to Dante's purgatorial journey in particular and, by extension, to Christian ascent literature in general. In Conjectures of a Guilty Bystander we catch both the social location of the one who conjectures and the incipient guilt of the one who does the watching from the edges; the bystander is a species of the stranger, a topic this I 8 MERTON SOCIETY-OAKHAM PAPERS, 2000 LAWRENCE CUNNINGHAM-MERTON AND THE STRANGER I 9 paper will soon make as a specific focus.

SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND JOB SATISFACTION IN MONK, S04E04, MR. MONK GOES TO THE OFFICE Adrian Monk was a brilliant detective for the San Francisco Police Department until his wife, Trudy, was killed by a car bomb in a parking garage, which Monk then believed was intended for him. He later believes that Trudy's death was part of a larger conspiracy that she had uncovered during her time as a journalist. Trudy's death led Monk to suffer a nervous breakdown. He was discharged from the force and became a recluse, refusing to leave his house for over three years. He is finally able to leave the house with the help of his nurse, Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram). The breakthrough allows him to work as a private detective and a consultant for the homicide unit despite limitations rooted in his obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), which had grown significantly worse after the tragedy. Monk's compulsive habits are numerous, and a number of phobias compound– his situation, such as his fear of germs. Monk has 312 fears, some of which are milk, ladybugs, harmonicas, heights, imperfection, and risk. The OCD and plethora of phobias inevitably lead to very awkward situations and cause problems for Monk and anyone around him, as he investigates cases. These same personal struggles, particularly the OCD, are what aid him in solving cases, such as his sharp memory, specific mindset and attention to detail. In one episode entitled "Mr. Monk and His Biggest Fan", Marci Maven (Sarah Silverman) has compiled a list of all of Adrian's fears.
