Community Pharmacy Surrey and Sussex (CPSS) August 2017 newsletter. We represent, support, develop and promote NHS Community Pharmacy in Surrey & Sussex in the interests of contractors and service users. Mitigating against losses as the cuts start to bite. A message from Mark Donaghy, West Sussex LPC Vice Chair The cuts to pharmacy income are starting to hurt so it is essential that as contractors, we take all steps possible to mitigate against losses. The obvious ways are to ensure that you are maximising your advanced services income and completing 400 MURs per year, as many NMS as possible and are ready to deliver the flu vaccination service. However there are other ways which you should be aware of... have your prescribers increased their prescribing duration e.g. from 28 to 56 or from 7 to 28 days? If so, have your prescription numbers decreased compared to the same month last year and is the reason due to the increase in prescribing duration and not because a new pharmacy has opened? If so, you should be eligible for a safeguarding payment using claim 2 outlined in Part XIVC of the Drug Tariff. The claim form needs to be downloaded from the NHSBSA website and has to be submitted with your prescriptions in each affected month. NHS England is currently consulting on advising CCGs to decommission prescribing of certain medicines and some local CCGs have already started so it is probably advisable to wait until you have a prescription before you reorder drugs such as liothyronine tablets, lidocaine patches, doxazosin MR and fentanyl lozenges which are some of those affected. You may wish to contact your head office for guidance. Surrey LPC Newsletter | August 2017 2 Surrey Carers Flu Voucher The annual ‘State of Caring’ survey 2017 evidences that there are 6.5 million carers in the UK providing unpaid care, 115,000 in Surrey. The value of the care they provide is worth £132 billion. The most recent GP patient survey found that 3 in 5 carers have a long term health condition, this compares with half of non-carers. This pattern is even more pronounced for younger adults providing care – 40% of carers aged 18-24 have a long term health condition compared with 29% of non-carers in the same age group. Carers report that they find it difficult to attend routine medical appointments and are often forced to put off treatment themselves because of their caring responsibilities. Without proper support, carers are frequently pushed to breaking point which can affect their own health. This year we are shining a spot light on carers’ health as part of our Winter Wellbeing Campaign and promoting the seasonal flu vaccination as one way we can improve and maintain carers health. Surrey is encouraging all carers to get vaccinated. In September in partnership with Surrey County Council, Surrey’s six clinical commissioning groups and Action for Carers Surrey we are launching our Surrey Carers Flu Voucher campaign. The seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to protect carers and the person they care for from flu, and will help prevent the caring scenario breaking down due to the carer becoming ill. These Free Carer Flu vouchers can be taken to participating pharmacists to be redeemed. Our aim is to increase carer flu vaccination uptake following a three year decline. Carers tell us that it is often more convenient for them to pop into their local pharmacists to receive a flu vaccine. As professionals who support carers on the frontline you are perfectly placed to help support us with this campaign helping to explain how important it is that they receive a flu vaccination. The Free Flu vouchers provides you with assurance that the carer is known to carers services here in Surrey and is therefore entitled to a free vaccination. Please note that you can refer carers for further support using PharmOutcomes or the Surrey Carers Prescription Service surreypharmacycarersprescription.org.uk For further information contact: Debbie Hustings, Partnership Manager Carers, Email: [email protected] Sexual Health Services and Ulipristal Acetate (Ella One) - Important information Surrey County Council have a public Health Agreement with Surrey pharmacies for emergency contraception.
