Introducing... Fine Greek Wine from Sotiris Bafitis Introducing... Fine Greek Wine from Sotiris Bafitis Selections Yes folks, it’s finally here. The long awaited, much anticipated, fine wine selection from the most ancient wine producing region in the world… Greece. And here to help us introduce these ‘oh so tasty’ wines into the market is Sotiris Bafitis, a native of Greece, who at the age of 16 came to America from Peloponnese, the finest wine making region the county has to offer. Inspired and determined to introduce the area to the wine makers of his home, Sotiris traveled back and forth from Patra with samples in hand, and began to catch the tasteful attention of wine drinkers with whom he crossed paths. Today, he boasts a fine selection of wine from Greece’s most reputable winemakers. And what a perfect time to introduce these wines into the market. Not only are they spectacular to drink, this summer thousands of people from around the world will gather in Athens to take part in the 2004 Olympic events. This should inspire us all to toast to the events with a bottle from the region where both wine and the Olympics began. Ancient Greece created the art of winemaking and bestowed that gift upon the Romans and the rest of the world. Wine production was the fundamental base of the ancient Greek economy. Today, the oldest wine-producing civilization in the world is now home to a new generation of high quality producers dedicated to changing the perception of Greek wines. The combination of modern winemaking techniques and native grapes, which descend from the times of ancient Greece, has led to the resurgence of a worthy contender in the winemaking industry. Sotiris believes there couldn’t be a better time to introduce Greek wines into the US market. “Major change is taking place in the Greek wine industry – for the better. A generation of young, talented and educated wine makers is transforming the industry and its global image by embracing “quality over quantity” philosophy and by employing modern viticulture and winemaking technologies. No soil or grapes are better suited for world-class wines than those of Greece.” Michael Franz, who has written many articles on Greek wines believes, “These are the most newsworthy wines around. No other country is sending us wines that are so strong and yet so little known. The best bottlings are absolutely delicious and extremely versatile with food. In terms of aroma, flavor and texture, they are often interestingly different then wines from, say, California or France. However, they are all well crafted and are neither quirky nor challenging. Anyone can enjoy them from the first sip.” Hosting the 2004 Olympics gives the revived Greek wine industry a unique opportunity. An opportunity to boasts their wine when they host a party for the world. Unfortunately, not all of us get to travel to Greece to participate in the Olympic events, but lucky for us here, we have their fine wines to enjoy as we watch from the living room and taste what the host country has to offer. Sotiris Bafitis’ collection comes from winemaking regions all over Greece. He has dedicated himself to selecting the finest winemakers to represent. These exceptional wines are delicious, mouth-watering, and easy to drink. Try them and you’ll realize why Greece is the wine region everyone is talking about. – Christina Morris, Bacchus Importers, Ltd. • François Rousset-Martin
FRANÇOIS ROUSSET-MARTIN Country: France Region: Jura Appellation(s): Côtes du Jura Producer: François Rousset-Martin Founded: 2007 Annual Production: 1,000 cases Farming: Organic Blink and you might miss Nevy-sur-Seille, a tiny village tucked away in the Vallée des Reculées, where François Rousset makes his wine. Albeit discreet, this part of the Jura resembles something of the American West—undiscovered and wild, and rich in natural habitat. The backdrop here is dramatic: Massive limestone and marl cliffs perched atop pedestals of sloping vineyards, and in the foreground, flocks of livestock grazing and snoozing the day away. Traditionally a mixed farming region, the Jura is witnessing a new generation focused exclusively on winemaking, and in the case of Rousset, redefining what we consider typical of the area with his vins ouillés. François first caught the wine-bug growing up in Burgundy where his father was a micro-biologist for the Hospices de Beaune. Childhood trips were spent in the Jura getting to know and falling in love with a parcel of family vines which he would later vinify with his father. After earning an oenology degree and continuing his journey in the southern Rhône and Languedoc regions, he returned to his Jurassian roots and in 2007 officially launched his winery. While his scientific background provides François with a literal understanding of the transformation from grape to wine, he’s most influenced by keen intuition, and winemaking lore passed down from his great grandfather, also a winemaker. François's raison d'être is to better know and understand the incredible terroirs in which he is invested.
