Introduction Recent decades have seen a growth in travel and tourism abroad because of cheap air fares and holiday packages. This has been accompanied by a relaxation of border controls, especially within parts of Europe participating in the Schengen Agreement. As some people may be more inclined to use illicit substances during holiday periods and some may even choose to travel to destinations that are associated with drug use — a phenomenon sometimes referred to as ‘drug tourism’ — this means that from a European drug policy perspective the issue of drug use and travel has become more important. This Thematic paper examines travellers and drug use, with a focus on Europeans travelling within Europe, although some other relevant destinations are also included.

  • Goa, India Destination Guide
Goa, India Destination Guide Overview of Goa This small state, halfway down India's west coast, was a Portuguese colony until 1961, which goes some way to explaining the alternative atmosphere found in the region. Cut off from British India by a wall of mountains and vast plains, Goa relied on trade with a declining Portuguese Empire. However, what was lost in terms of British trade was more than made up for in terms of Portuguese attitude. To this day, Goa retains a distinctly laid-back and relaxed feel. Goa was 'discovered' by travellers in the late 1960s, when many were searching for somewhere unique and off the beaten tourist track. Goa quickly became a kind of hippie paradise, where holidaying meant simply hanging out and partying on the beach (particularly during full moon). The state quickly grew a reputation for its hedonism and liberal attitude, not to mention its hot sun, that sets in splendour every evening over the Arabian Sea. In recent years, though it still hosts epic trance music festivals (such as Sunburn), the authorities of Goa have tried to discourage hippies and budget backpackers from swamping the area, angling rather for clientele with fatter wallets, with the result that Goa is slowly losing its reputation as India's 'party central'. With a quick rail link to Mumbai and charter flights from the UK, thousands of tourists flock here each winter to relax and enjoy the famous Goan cuisine, which largely consists of seafood prepared in exotic Indian spices. Many hotels and resorts have popped up over the last few years to cater for this ever-popular destination, but with more than 25 miles (40km) of beautiful sandy beaches, there is still plenty of tranquillity to be found.

101 Must-Do World Events in 2016 Whether you’re after something sporty, musical or just a great big party, look out for these symbols throughout this guide. 12 months, 101 big events SPORT If you’re planning an adventure in 2016, you’re in luck. We’ve scoured the world for the biggest, the messiest, the noisiest, the most iconic and, frankly, the weirdest events around the world to compile the ultimate list of 101 must-see events. Many of the events in our list tick most – if not all – of those boxes. Just take the colour and spectacle of India’s Holi Festival as an example. Bright paint coats everyone and everything – you’ll think a rainbow’s just exploded – as EXTREME CHALLENGES people mingle and create a joyous cacophony on the streets. Next, think of the tasty, fat, ripe, juicy tomatoes of Buñol in south east Spain. Perfect in a summer salad, you’d think? Not at Tomatina. Here, tomatoes are thrown around like confetti for no greater purpose than entertainment. For something a little more refined, there’s the glitz and glamour of the Cannes Film Festival. With its blinding flashbulbs and flowing gowns, it offers FESTIVALS + CELEBRATIONS a glimpse of a world most of us can only see from the outside. But never mind, you’re in the south of France, where the cuisine is a lip-smacking marriage of sun-drenched veg and fresh Mediterranean seafood, and where there are more sunny days than not. And for the sports freak – and we’re talking serious freakishness here – there’s no challenge like the Marathon des Sables.
