À Instituição PUC-PR, ao seu corpo docente, à direção e administração do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Teologia (PPGT), por nos proporcionar os recursos necessários para elaborar o trabalho. 8 RESUMO Esta dissertação procura explicitar teologicamente a dimensão pneumatológica da igreja, na perspectiva da igreja batista no Brasil. Trata-se de uma pesquisa vinculada ao projeto de estudos sobre Pneumatologia e Experiência Cristã, do professor- orientador Dr. Marcial Maçaneiro, da Linha de Pesquisa “Teologia, Evangelização e Diversidade Religiosa” (PPGT-PUCPR). Para tanto, pesquisam-se as origens dos batistas no mundo, iniciando pelos anabatistas e sua relação com o movimento da Reforma, sua expansão na Europa, em seguida na América, a vinda dos missionários ao Brasil e o início das denominações batistas nesse país. Durante o crescimento do movimento batista no Brasil pesquisou-se a formação da Convenções Nacionais e o relacionamento destas no decorrer dos anos, analisando seu crescimento e posterior divisão dessas Convenções. Busca-se articular a pneumatologia e a eclesiologia à luz das maiores Convenções Batistas no Brasil: a Convenção Batista Brasileira (CBB) e a Convenção Batista Nacional (CBN), aproximando as declarações de fé destas Convenções. Estuda-se ainda nesse trabalho os elementos pneumatológicos referentes à comunhão (unidade, diversidade, koinonia, diaconia e ordenanças) e a individuação dos elementos referentes à missão (dons, ministérios, evangelismos e vocação missionária). Um outro ponto a ressaltar nessa dissertação é a perspectiva da aproximação/compreensão da experiência pentecostal vivida pelas igrejas dessas Convenções. Entende-se que existem necessidades e oportunidades teológicas que esclarecem o dado de fé, do qual o Espírito Santo é constituinte na Igreja e demonstrar como o nexo entre eclesiologia e pneumatologia ocorrem na confissão de fé. Por fim, demonstra a urgência entre o entendimento entre batistas clássicos e batistas pentecostais, buscando a unidade em questões essenciais do cristianismo, intensificando o diálogo entre grupos. Utilizou-se como método a pesquisa histórico- bibliográfica, de caráter qualitativo e descritivo-analítico para mapear experiências passadas pelos batistas no Brasil e com isso localizar os batistas no tempo, suas tendências, eventos e fenômenos, proporcionando respostas ao questionamento. Como fonte de pesquisa utilizou-se a Biblioteca da Primeira Igreja Batista de Curitiba – PIB Curitiba; Biblioteca da PUCPR; Livros indicados pelo orientador da PUCPR e pelo Pr. Presidente da Primeira Igreja Batista de Curitiba; utilizaram-se sites da Convenção Batista Brasileira, Convenção Batista Nacional e das igrejas batistas, capturaram-se estudos em sites que evidenciassem relatos históricos sobre a experiência de fé e a sobrevivência dos batistas em seu percurso para analisar o relacionamento entre o Espírito Santo, a Igreja e o Estado, entre o pneumatológico- eclesiológico. Em relação aos resultados obtidos nessa pesquisa, recomenda-se intensificar o diálogo entre a CBB e a CBN. No entanto, as iniciativas pontuais já praticadas poderão estender-se às igrejas destas Convenções, em meio a um clima de amor fraternal, visando promover maior abertura e confraternização. Palavras chave: Anabatistas, Batistas, Pneumatologia, Eclesiologia, Pentecostal. 9 ABSTRACT This dissertation seeks to make theologically the pneumatological dimension of the church in perspective of the Baptist Church in Brazil. It is a research inserted in the project of studies on Pneumatology and Christian Experience, of the professor- orientador Dr. Marcial Maçaneiro, of the area of concentration in Theology, Evangelization and Religious Diversity (PPGT-PUC-PR). In order to do so, one searches for the origins of the Baptists in the world, beginning with the Anabaptists and its relation with the movement of the Reformation, its expansion in Europe and soon in America, the missionaries coming to Brazil and the beginning of the Baptist denominations in that country. During the growth of the Baptist movement in Brazil, the formation of National Conventions and their relationship over the years was analyzed, analyzing the growth and subsequent division of the Conventions. It seeks to articulate pneumatology and ecclesiology in the light of the major Baptist Conventions in Brazil: the Brazilian Baptist Convention (CBB) and the National Baptist Convention (CBN), bringing the declarations of faith closer to these Conventions. The pneumatological elements related to communion (unity, diversity, koinonia, diaconia and ordinances), as well as the individuation of the elements related to the mission (gifts, ministries, evangelism and missionary vocation) are also studied in this work. Another point to emphasize in this dissertation is the perspective of the approximation / understanding of the Pentecostal experience lived in the churches of these Conventions. It is understood that there are theological needs and opportunities that clarify the data of faith that the Holy Spirit is the constituent of the Church and demonstrate how the nexus between Ecclesiology and Pneumatology is in the confession of faith. Finally, it is intended to demonstrate the urgency between the understanding between classical Baptists and Pentecostal Baptists, seeking unity in the essential questions of Christianity, intensifying the dialogue between groups. Historical-bibliographic research was used as a qualitative and descriptive-analytical method to map the experiences of Baptists in Brazil and thus to locate the Baptists in time, their tendencies, events and phenomena, in the sense of providing answers to the questioning. As source of research was used the Library of the First Baptist Church of Curitiba - PIB Curitiba; PUC-PR Library; Books nominated by the PUC-PR advisor and by the President of the First Baptist Church of Curitiba; sites of the Brazilian Baptist Convention, National Baptist Convention and Baptist churches were used, studies were carried out on sites that showed historical accounts of the experience of faith and the survival of Baptists in their journey to analyze the relationship between the Holy Spirit, the Church and the State, between the pneumatological- ecclesiological.Conclusão dos resultados. They had grown used to the security that comes from a steady job, income and the support of their church. But Sue was excited about the possibilities of missions. The more they discussed it the more excited they got. First of all they wouldn't have to join a mission organization. They were painfully aware of a young couple from their church who had spent several years trying to raise enough support for missions and then had fallen short and were now trying to sort their lives out.

    Lived Religion and the Changing Spirituality and Discourse of Christian Globalization: A Canadian Family’s Odyssey MARGUERITE VAN DIE Queen’s University Few individuals have presented a greater challenge to a secular society’s understanding of the past than the missionary. “Once almost universally acclaimed as a self-sacrificing benefactor, he or she is now more com- monly dismissed as an interfering busybody and in all probability a misfit at home who could find only among the colonized a captive audience on whom to impose a narrow set of beliefs and moral taboos.”1 Thankfully, in the three decades since this memorable characterization by Canadian church historian John Webster Grant, research into related areas such as gender and theological change has done much to deconstruct these stereotypes. Recent work on Christian globalization has moreover drawn attention to the ways the missionary enterprise changed religion not simply among the indigenous population, but also at home. Mark Noll, for example, has argued that by the early twentieth century as part of a larger global “multi-centering,” Christianity in North America was subtly shifting away from traditional church and imperial norms towards new models. It is now generally accepted that this re-centering was accompa- nied by an enormous release of evangelical energy, and the impact of an emerging global society profoundly reshaped Christianity.2 My essay builds on Noll’s observations, but rather than focusing on missionary institutions and their spokespersons, it examines from below some of the continuities and changes in the spirituality and discourse of Christian globalization. The first open discussion of the S.S. of any significance appeared in Peter Fryer’s Private Case, Public Scandal (1966), a marvellous little polemic that grew out of research he was doing towards a history of contraception. 1 Fryer found that a number of books he needed to refer to in the course of his work were kept in the British Library’s Private Case, their extensive erotica collection. 2 Unlike most other national or academic libraries that have erotic or obscene material on their shelves, the British Library did not include it in their General Catalogue, but did maintain a separate and effectively secret catalogue of it, a copy of which was kept at the issuing desk in the Reading Room.     CHRISTIAN CITIZENSHIP AND THE FOREIGN WORK OF THE YMCA By REBECCA ANN HODGES A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in HISTORY in the Graduate Division of the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY COMMITTEE IN CHARGE: Professor Rebecca McLennan, Chair Professor David Henkin Professor Wendy Brown SUMMER 2017 1 Copyright 2017 by Rebecca Ann Hodges All Rights Reserved 1 ABSTRACT CHRISTIAN CITIZENSHIP AND THE FOREIGN WORK OF THE YMCA by Rebecca Ann Hodges Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Berkeley Professor Rebecca McLennan, Chair Beginning in the last decade of the nineteenth century, Christian reformers of the North American Young Men’s Christian Association and related organizations set themselves the task of training the rising leadership of nations around the world in a set of ideals they termed “Christian citizenship.” Motivated by ideas about God’s universal grace, by liberal ideals of personhood, and by fears of moral crisis, the middle class evangelical reformers of the YMCA, the YWCA, the Student Volunteer Movement (SVM), and the World’s Student Christian Federation (WSCF) sought not only to “evangelize the world in this generation,” but to teach good citizenship and encourage fair play among individuals and among nations—to foster ideals of justice, equality, and democracy among their constituencies in China, Japan, India, and beyond, in a millennial project ultimately designed to save the world, politically as well as spiritually. From the 1890s into the 1920s, Christian reformers dedicated themselves to the work of imparting the ideals of “Christian citizenship” through educational, social, and religious programs, as well as through training in sports and sportsmanship.
