There is some controversy about the specific assignment of these populations: while most authors assign them toC. pyrenaica (Gené, 1832), other consider that C. aptera (Mégerlé, 1825) is also present in the Pyrenees. The main objective of this work was to revise the identity and synonyms of Pyrenean Chelidura. Specimens from recent fieldwork and collections (MNCN-CSIC) were used for morphological and molecular studies (cytochrome oxidase 1). All Pyrenean specimens shared similar cox1 sequences, very divergent from those of Alpine C. ap- tera. As a consequence, the variability observed in male cerci morphology from the Pyrenees, ranging from long and slightly curved to short and very curved, corresponded to C. pyrenaica, and the presence of C. aptera in the Pyrenees can be rejected. As previously suggested by Maccagno (1933) and Fontana et al. (2021), the revision of the synonymic list uncovered the misplacement of the name F. simplex Germar, 1825 under the synonymy of C. aptera, while it rather represents a synonym of C.

  • (Embiidina, Dermaptera, Isoptera) from the Balkans
Opusc. Zool. Budapest, 2013, 44 (suppl. 1): 167–186 Data to three insect orders (Embiidina, Dermaptera, Isoptera) from the Balkans D. MURÁNYI Dr. Dávid Murányi, Department of Zoology, Hungarian Natural History Museum, H-1088 Budapest, Baross u. 13, Hungary. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. The Embiidina, Dermaptera and Isoptera material, collected in the Balkans by the soil zoological expeditions of the Hungarian Natural History Museum and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences between 2002 and 2012, is enumerated and depicted on maps. New country records of six earwig species are reported: Chelidurella s.l. acanthopygia (Gené, 1832) from Montenegro, Anechura bipunctata (Fabricius, 1781) from Albania, Apterygida media (Hagenbach, 1822) from Montenegro and Macedonia, Guanchia obtusangula (Krauss, 1904) from Macedonia, Forficula aetolica Brunner, 1882 from Bulgaria and Forficula smyrnensis Serville, 1839 from Montenegro and Macedonia. Populations of Chelidurella Verhoeff, 1902 from Dalmatian Croatia and Montenegro probably belong to two undescribed taxa, but these are threated as C. s.l. acanthopygia herein and their morphological features are showed on figures. Due to its rarity in the Balkans, taxonomical features of the Macedonian Guanchia obtusangula specimen are also showed on figures. The webspinner Haploembia palaui Stefani, 1955 is reported from Crete for the first time, which represents the second occurrence in the Balkans. The order Isoptera is reported from Montenegro and the Aegean Isles for the first time, while Reticulitermes balkanensis Clément, 2001 is considered as a nomen nudum. Keywords. Earwings, Embioptera, Embiodea, webspinners, termites, new records INTRODUCTION Being less striking in appearance, and of whole lifecycle hided beneath stones and logs, we espite their conspiciuous appearance, fre- have even fewer data on the not so frequent Bal- D quency, low species number and easy identi- kanic webspinners (Embiidina).

Parental relations in Dermaptera. Parent-young relations are far from being unvarying and simple, even within a group as homogeneous and modest in number (1 000 actual species) as Dermaptera. Care of the eggs by a female and the contacts she maintains with her larvae are neither established nor developed in an automatic way, but are amenable to important regulations in which behaviour itself is implied. The presence of larvae also has an important effect on the later development of the female’s behaviour. Relationships can be established between known inter and intra- specific differences and between. - the ovarian organization and activity of each species or population, on the one hand and - the living conditions adopted by each species or population (Labidura riparia, Anechura bipunctata, Forficula auricularia) on the other.

  • Reproductive Biology and Nymphal Development in the Basal Earwig
Entomologische Abhandlungen 62 (2): 99–116 © Museum für Tierkunde Dresden, ISSN 0373-8981, 28.07.2005 Reproductive Biology and Nymphal Development in the Basal Earwig Tagalina papua (Insecta: Dermaptera: Pygidicranidae), with a Comparison of Brood Care in Dermaptera and Embioptera DANILO MATZKE 1 & KLAUS-DIETER KLASS 2 1 Stöckelstrasse 19, 04347 Leipzig, Germany [[email protected]] – 2 Staatliche Naturhistorische Sammlungen Dresden, Museum für Tierkunde, Königsbrücker Landstrasse 159, 01109 Dresden, Germany [[email protected]] Abstract. Based on breeding cultures various behaviours, reproductive biology including maternal brood care, and nymphal development were studied in the basal dermapteran Tagalina papua de Bormans, 1903 (Pygidicranidae s.str.). Supplementary observations were made on T. burri Hincks, 1955, Paracranopygia siamensis (Dohrn, 1863) (Pygidicranidae s.str.), and an unidentified species of Diplatyidae. T. papua specimens did not display any courtship behaviour. In egg deposition gonapophyses VIII are used as a guiding device for the proper placement and upright positioning of the eggs. Eggs are fixed to the substrate in Tagalina, Paracranopygia, and the diplatyid, probably using secretions from the true accessory (colleterial) glands, which have been retained in most basal Dermaptera. Consequently, eggs cannot be transported and piled up, which in other Dermaptera is an important component of brood care. Brood care in T. papua consists in the association with and defense of eggs and 1st instar nymphs and the occasional control of the eggs by the mouth parts, but no egg cleaning was observed. Brood care is thus less ela- borate than in all examined higher Forficulina. Arguments are provided why this simple pattern is plesiomorphic for Dermaptera.

THE DERMAPTERA IN THE MUSEUMS AT LEIDEN AND AMSTERDAM by M. BOESEMAN (Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden) The collections of Dermaptera in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke His- torie at Leiden and the Zoölogisch Museum at Amsterdam, referred to in the present paper as "Museum Leiden" and "Museum Amsterdam", consist of numerous specimens including many types described by previous authors and a fairly large number of hitherto unidentified examples. A reinvestiga- tion and an identification of the unidentified material therefore promised interesting results, a promise which has been fulfilled. The investigations took place during the war years 1942 and 1943 under unfavorable circumstances. The original MS was finished shortly after the war but, due to printing difficulties, publication had to be postponed. During the recent preparation of the present paper, some alterations and corrections of the old MS were found necessary and recent literature was added. No time was available for the examination and inclusion in the present paper of the acquisitions of both collections during and since the war. The almost 3500 specimens included in this paper proved to belong to 157 species, 2 subspecies, 16 varieties; among these, 20 species and 8 varieties are new to science while the types were found of 30 species described by previous authors, most by De Haan, De Bormans, Dohrn, and Burr. The following new species are described: Diplatymorpha borneensis nov. gen., nov. spec. (fig. 2) Dicrana jacobsoni nov. spec. (fig. 4) Pyge vanderdoesi nov. spec. (fig. 5) Gonolabidura javana nov. spec. (figs. 6a, 7a, b) Gonolabidura boschmai nov. spec. (figs. 6b, 8) Gonolabis acuta nov.

Dermaptera species in fruit orchards in the Western Black Sea region of Turkey. Munis Entomology & Zoology, 15 (2): 357-363] ABSTRACT: Earwigs are sub-social species, with their females defending their eggs and young nymphs. They are omnivores feeding on decayed animal or plant waste, aphids, and other small insects. In the study, 345 earwig samples were collected from apple (48%), cherry (40%) and hazelnut (12%) trees from June/July to November in 2015 and 2016. The aphids were found as the most abundant insect in the apple orchards in June, but most red mites in cherry orchards were observed in July and August. Three species, Forficula auricularia Linnaeus, Forficula smyrnensis Serville, and Guanchia hincksi (Burr), were collected from the apple and cherry orchards in Bolu province; and F. auricularia, G. hincki, and Apterygida albipennis (Megerle von Mühlfeld) were collected from the hazelnut orchards in Düzce province. F. smyrnensis was recorded for the first time in Bolu and G. hincksi in Düzce. F. auricularia was the common species in the fruit areas of the Western Black Sea Region. This paper also discusses information on the seasonal occurrence and feeding behavior of earwigs.

  • Current Status of Dermaptera (Insecta) Fauna of Turkey and Cyprus
Türk. entomol. derg., 2012, 36 (1): 43-58 ISSN 1010-6960 Orijinal araştırma (Original article) Current status of Dermaptera (Insecta) fauna of Turkey and Cyprus Türkiye ve Kıbrıs Dermaptera (Insecta) faunasının güncel durumu 1 2 Sinan ANLAŞ Petr KOČÁREK Summary Dermaptera fauna of Turkey and Cyprus were evaluated on the basis of recently collected specimens, revisions of museum and private collections and data from the literature. New data are reported on the occurrence of 18 species from Turkey and three species from Cyprus. The total number of species known from Turkey is 19 and from Cyprus is six. Isolaboides kosswigi (Burr, 1947) is the only endemic species in the Turkish dermapteran fauna. The first precise records of Isolabella graeca Verhoeff, 1901 and Forficula lucasi Dohrn, 1865 from Turkey are presented and the occurrence of Anechura zubovskii (Semenov, 1901) is confirmed by recent records. Forficula auricularia Linnaeus, 1758 is recorded from Cyprus for the first time. A key to the Dermaptera species of Turkey and Cyprus is also provided. Key words: Dermaptera, fauna, Turkey, Cyprus, species key Özet Bu çalışmada Türkiye ve Kıbrıs Dermaptera faunasının son durumu, yakın zamanda toplanan örnekler, müze revizyonları, kişisel kolleksiyon örnekleri ve literature dayanılarak gözden geçirilmiştir.
