SL Benfica v FC MATCH PRESS KIT A Luz, Tuesday, 28 March 2006 - 20:45 CET Quarter-finals - Matchday 9

When FC Barcelona won the European Champion Clubs© Cup for the first and only time it was ©s goal that made it possible. Now the illustrious former defender is in charge of SL Benfica, the next opponents to stand in the way of a second European Cup success for the Catalan side.

Historic meeting · The clubs met for the first time in the 1960/61 European Cup final which ended Real Madrid CF©s run of five successive triumphs since the competition began. Benfica returned home from Berne with the trophy after a 3-2 win - they retained it the following year, beating Madrid 5-3 in - and it was they who earlier this month curtailed the reign of the most recent champions, Liverpool FC, in the first knockout round.

Story so far · Their 2-0 victory at Anfield on Matchday 8 was secured with goals from Simão and Fabrizio Miccoli and added to the 1-0 home win that came courtesy of Luisão©s late header.

· In the quarter-finals, the Portuguese title-holders stage the first game again with the return at on 5 April. Barcelona are seen by many as the most likely to be crowned champions in Paris on 17 May but Benfica will be encouraged by their ability to score goals against a Liverpool team who had previously gone five matches in the competition without conceding.

Last meeting · The only other occasion the two sides faced up saw Barça emerge triumphant ± and it proved a happy omen with Koeman going on to win Europe©s most prestigious club prize with a 1-0 victory at Wembley against UC Sampdoria. In the group stage that immediately preceded the final of the 1991/92 tournament, Barcelona earned a 0-0 draw in Portugal before a 2-1 home success.

Barça on top · Barcelona©s confidence will stem from the fact that in home-and-away format against Portuguese opposition they have won seven of their eight ties, reeling off a succession of victories since their first two-legged tie, in the 1972/73 UEFA Cup first round against FC Porto, ended in defeat.

· Yet Barça©s in Portugal is not as impressive, losing four and drawing two of their first six outings. However, they have prevailed on their last two trips across the border, most recently a 2-0 success at Porto in the 1999/00 European Cup second group stage.

Just one Spanish reverse · At home to Spanish visitors, Benfica have lost only once in six fixtures and that came this season, a 1-0 reverse at the hands of CF, as they ended an absence of seven years with their third appearance in the UEFA Champions League.

· Their defeat by Villarreal at the Estádio da Luz on Matchday 4 was their first at home, excluding qualifying, in their entire UEFA Champions League history. Their record in ten other home games in the competition proper shows eight wins and two draws.

Rare away win · The victory at Anfield was Benfica©s first away from home in the UEFA Champions League. In 13 previous matches on the road, including qualifying rounds, they had drawn six and lost seven.

· Before the second leg Benfica, who are aiming for their first UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance, will be reminded they do not have a particularly impressive record in , having played there on six occasions and won just once.

· That sole triumph was a 2-1 defeat of Balompié in the 1982/83 UEFA Cup first round. In the third round of the same tournament in the 1999/00 campaign, Benfica suffered their heaviest loss in UEFA competition, succumbing 7-0 at RC Celta de Vigo.

Eight wins in a row · Meanwhile, Barcelona have shown imperious form at home against Portuguese opposition. After losing their first game against guests from their neighbouring country in the 1972/73 UEFA Cup, 1-0 to Porto, Barça have won the next eight, keeping clean sheets in five of them.

Route to quarter-finals · ©s side, who in their tenth UEFA Champions League campaign are attempting to reach the semi-finals for the fourth time, knocked out another favoured team, Chelsea FC, in the last stage. A 2-1 victory in , with Samuel Eto©o©s late header adding to an own goal, gave the Spanish champions a good platform and a 1-1 draw at home was enough to see them through. ©s goal was his sixth in the competition.

Awayday form · Following a run of three successive away defeats in last season©s competition, Barcelona have remained unbeaten on their travels with three wins and a draw. The only goal conceded in those four outings was an own goal.

· Following their home loss to Juventus in the quarter-final second leg in 2002/03 they have been unbeaten in eight matches, winning six and drawing two.

Head coach profiles

Ronald Koeman Date of birth: 21 March 1963 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: FC Groningen, AFC Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, FC Barcelona, Feyenoord Coaching career: Netherlands (assistant coach), FC Barcelona (assistant coach), SBV Vitesse, AFC Ajax, SL Benfica

Ronald Koeman bounced back quickly from a disappointing end to his reign at AFC Ajax in February 2005, taking up the vacant position at Portuguese champions SL Benfica following the departure of legendary Italian .

Ajax©s fortunes suffered a steady decline after Koeman got off to a brilliant start at the ArenA, winning a domestic double in 2001/02. Despite regaining the title in 2003/04, Ajax had fallen behind rivals PSV Eindhoven as the Netherlands© top team, and Koeman resigned after the Amsterdam side were knocked out of the UEFA Cup by AJ Auxerre. Benfica fans may prefer to forget that Koeman was a member of the PSV Eindhoven side that overcame the Eagles in the 1988 European Champion Clubs© Cup final, the libero converting the opening kick in PSV©s 6-5 penalty shoot-out victory after 120 goalless minutes in Stuttgart.

Koeman was admired not only as an accomplished sweeper but also as a free-kick expert, and it was from a dead-ball that he scored FC Barcelona©s winning goal in the 1992 European Cup final. Koeman and brother Erwin started out at their father©s old club, FC Groningen, and were later members of the Netherlands side which won the 1988 UEFA European Championship - the country©s first and only major international honour. That triumph capped a momentous year, Koeman also winning the European Cup and Dutch double, and paved the way for a move to Barça in 1989 where he would win another four Spanish titles.

Frank Rijkaard Date of birth: 30 September 1962 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: AFC Ajax (twice), Sporting Clube de Portugal, Real Zaragoza, AC Milan Coaching career: Netherlands, Sparta , FC Barcelona

If Frank Rijkaard©s second season at FC Barcelona was anything to go by ± a Spanish title and some memorable performances in the UEFA Champions League ± there is no reason why he cannot steer one of Europe©s grandest clubs to even greater glory.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that his mentor as a youngster was . The Dutch legend groomed Rijkaard at AFC Ajax in 1979 where the defender progressed so quickly that he was pulling on the Netherlands shirt aged just 19. In 1987, Rijkaard left the Amsterdam club and had brief spells in Portugal and Spain before committing the key years of his career to AC Milan with whom he twice won the European Champion Clubs© Cup. Highly versatile, Rijkaard played in midfield for Milan but in central defence for his country as they lifted the 1988 UEFA European Championship.

He returned to Ajax in 1993 and helped them, ironically, defeat Milan in the 1995 UEFA Champions League final in . When he eventually hung up his boots, heads turned as Rijkaard was appointed coach of his country before UEFA EURO 2000™. A semi-final place followed but Rijkaard left his post to pursue a career in club management. His first stint ended poorly, as he resigned from Sparta Rotterdam in May 2002 when they were relegated from the Dutch for the first time, although Barça were not put off and have since seen their faith repaid handsomely.

Domestic news

SL Benfica came through a difficult examination against one of their rivals for a place in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League, defeating SC Braga to rise to third in the Portuguese Liga. For now, however, their attentions turn to this season©s competition where they meet FC Barcelona, whose reshuffled side were held by the Primera División©s bottom club.

SL Benfica 1-0 SC Braga A second-minute strike from Nuno Gomes proved sufficient as Benfica earned a morale-boosting victory against ten-man Braga at the Estádio da Luz on Saturday. The Portuguese striker directed in Laurent Robert©s right-wing cross as the home team made enjoyed a dream start, watched from the bench by the rested Geovanni and Fabrizio Miccoli. Benfica continued to press but could not add to their advantage and Braga, who started the day two points ahead in the Portuguese Liga in third, took the initiative after the interval. An equaliser proved elusive, and their hopes of a comeback were all but ended by Luís Filipe©s dismissal midway through the second half as Benfica stepped up into third place.

"We were aggressive at the start and worked well, although we were lucky to score from our first opportunity," said coach Ronald Koeman, who selected the versatile Ricardo Rocha at right-back in place of the injured Nélson. "We kept our composure after they were reduced to ten men and were content to simply control the game. It was very important we won ahead of the Barcelona tie. We know they©re a great team but we also know that we can surprise them. Anything is possible."

Málaga CF 0-0 FC Barcelona Former Barcelona goalkeeper Francesc Arnau was in sublime form against his old employers at La Rosaleda as the Primera División leaders endured a frustrating evening against bottom side Málaga on Saturday. With Lionel Messi nursing a thigh injury and Deco and Ronaldinho rested, Barça started with Henrik Larsson and Samuel Eto©o in attack, and the latter thought he had scored early on but the effort was disallowed because of an earlier handball. It was to prove a sign of things to come, and as the game wore on Arnau made several fine stops to deny the visitors. Even when he was beaten in the final minute, Eto©o©s shot cannoned back off the crossbar.

"It©s a fair result," said Frank Rijkaard. "On our part it wasn©t a very good match, but we approached the game in the right way against a very passionate Málaga team. We created good chances, but we did not know how to convert them, it©s a pity we couldn©t score the vital goal." The result, which followed victories against Real Sociedad de Fútbol and Getafe CF, came despite several defensive absentees. Carles Puyol was suspended, joining injured trio Xavi Hernández (knee), Edmílson (thigh) and Rafael Márquez (calf) in the stands.

· Financial information: UEFA has estimated that the gross budgeted income for the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League will be €598m - higher than the revenue obtained last season. Based on those amounts, €453m would go to the 32 clubs, including €22.5m for the professional leagues of the participating associations, and €145m to UEFA for European football. Clubs in the group stage will receive a starting fee of €1.6m and a bonus of €321,000 per match. Performance bonuses will involve €321,000 for a win and €161,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €1.6m each, the eight quarter-finalists €1.9m each and the four semi-finalists €2.6m. The Champions League winners will receive €6.4m, and the runners-up €3.9m. This means that a total minimum amount of €3.5m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €18m, not counting the TV market pool share and gate receipts.

UEFA information

UEFA©s Executive Committee approved the regulations for next season©s UEFA Champions League at its two-day meeting prior to the XXX Ordinary UEFA Congress in on Thursday. It also approved the competition's financial distribution model for the period 2006-09, which will be based on the same principles currently being applied.

This entails 75 per cent for the clubs and 25 per cent for European football (solidarity payments, organisational cost and UEFA share) up to an amount of €530m, then 82 per cent for the clubs and 18 per cent for UEFA above the said revenue. From the gross club share, five per cent is redistributed to the leagues of the 32 teams involved in the UEFA Champions League, and the net club share is divided 50-50 between fixed amounts and market pool.

It was agreed that any surplus over the projected overall gross revenue of €750m, would first be allocated to fund an increase in the solidarity amount of around €10m for the clubs eliminated in the qualifying phase of the UEFA Champions League. "We are, in principle, keeping the same model as before," UEFA CEO Lars-Christer Olsson said, "but there is one very important new element which has also been agreed with the clubs in the European Club Forum and the [UEFA Club Competitions] Committee. That is to increase the support for those clubs who are playing qualification rounds and not qualifying for the last phase [of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup]."

In a subsequent report to the Congress, UEFA©s Executive Committee said that while there is much for European football to be happy about, a number of elements within the game were giving cause for concern. UEFA©s supreme executive body said efforts to strike a balance between sporting and economic aspects could only be successful if the stable foundations on which football is based were protected. At the end of Congress, UEFA©s 52 member associations adopted a resolution in relation to recent developments concerning European football and its competitions. The resolution concerned issues such as UEFA©s core principles and beliefs, the release of players for national teams and challenges to this rule, and solidarity and sporting values within European football.
