THE MEMOIRS OF A NEW RUSSIAN MANUFACTURER Homeless My family on my mother's side comes from peasant stock. For several generations they had lived in the village of Khilkovo, on the Vorona River in central Russia. These are the backwoods. Our village was one of those "different" ones, like Zaplatova, Dyriavina, Razutova, Znobishina, Gorelova, Neelova, and Neurozhaika.1 The back of the beyond. I was born in Krasnodar, a generous, green city. I never knew my father. My parents parted ways when I was less than a year old. I learned a bit about my father later from stories. He was of Kuban Cossack heritage, and he served in the armed forces. Apart from me he left no visible signs that he ever existed. While I was growing up, I was less than obedient. I was continually annoying my nearest and dearest with outbursts and escapades. My mother had no time for such things, and she found it hard to deal with me. She worked long hours as a bookkeeper and earned miserable wages. She often had to take a second job. My mother loved me, of course, but fitfully and furiously, dissolving in the desperate, even morbid attachment of a lonely woman to her only child. We often quarreled. Her punishments and moral admonitions, her reproaches and silencings drove me crazy. I soon became my own master. I do not remember when, but soon enough she lost control over me. My grandmother Evdokia lived with us. It was she who had a decisive influence on me. Although she never really tried either to educate or spoil me, her kindness and patience won me over.

  • Sociophonetics of Popular Music: Insights from Corpus Analysis and Speech Perception Experiments
Sociophonetics of Popular Music: Insights from Corpus Analysis and Speech Perception Experiments Andy M. Gibson This dissertation is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics Department of Linguistics University of Canterbury New Zealand September 2019 To my Dad, who taught me the joy of climbing hills on blustery days. Abstract This thesis examines the flexibility and context-sensitivity of speech perception by look- ing at a domain not often explored in the study of language cognition — popular music. Three empirical studies are presented. The first examines the current state of sociolinguis- tic variation in commercial popular music, while the second and third explore everyday listeners’ perception of language in musical and non-musical contexts. The foundational assumption of the thesis is that the use of ‘American English’ in song is automatic for New Zealand singers, and constitutes a responsive style that is both accurate and consistent. The use of New Zealand English in song, by contrast, is stylised, involving an initiative act of identity and requiring effort and awareness. This will be discussed in Chapter 1,where I also introduce the term Standard Popular Music Singing Style (SPMSS) to refer to the US English-derived phonetic style dominant in popular song. The first empirical study will be presented in Chapter 2. Using a systematically selected corpus of commercial pop and hip hop from NZ and the USA, analysis of non-prevocalic and linking /r/, and the vowels of the bath, lot and goat lexical sets confirm that SPMSS is highly normative in NZ music.

  • Creative Reflections of Pasifika Ethnic Mixedness
‘The Bitter Sweetness of the Space Between’: Creative Reflections of Pasifika Ethnic Mixedness By Emily Fatu A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Pacific Studies Pacific Studies, Va‘aomanū Pasifika Victoria University 2016 Abstract This Master of Arts thesis investigates and draws conclusions regarding how creative arts present accommodating spaces for articulating and understanding cultural mixedness amongst Pacific populations in New Zealand. New Zealand is home to an expanding Pacific population; statistics identify a growing number of these Pacific people who are multi-ethnic, and who are claiming their mixedness in official census data. As Pacific populations have grown, Pacific artists have risen to national prominence in visual, literary and performing arts. Many of these artists have themselves been of mixed ancestry. This thesis examines the work of three female New Zealand artists of mixed Samoan-English or Samoan- Indian descent, asking, “How do these artists and their work express their cultural mixedness?” Discussion centres on mixed media visual artist Niki Hastings-McFall, who is of English and Samoan descent; spoken word poet Grace Taylor, also of English and Samoan descent; and musical performer Aaradhna Patel, who is of Indian and Samoan descent. Placing both the creative work and public commentary of these three artists at its centre, this thesis explores how these artists publicly identify with their Samoan heritage as well as their other heritage(s); how they use their art as a platform for identity articulation; and how creative arts provide flexible and important spaces for self-expression.

The most important individuals who have helped this come to life have been my family, first, and my mentors and colleagues quickly behind. Without their love and support none of this would have been possible, or for that matter, would have had much genuine meaning. I am grateful also to the numerous professors at Case Western Reserve University who have been a part of our Learning Fellows Seminar program, who permitted me a glimpse into their professional lives, as well as graciously inviting me to try to understand their feelings and thoughts. This paper is dedicated to those university professors around the world who continue to inspire their students, for whom learning is every bit as important as teaching.
