  • Meanings of Worship in Wooden Architecture in Brick
MEANINGS OF WORSHIP IN WOODEN ARCHITECTURE IN BRICK Yin Wu A thesis submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of Art. Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Eduardo Douglas Wei-Cheng Lin Daniel Sherman @2016 Yin Wu ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Yin Wu: Meanings of Worship in Wooden Architecture in Brick (Under the direction of Wei-Cheng Lin) The brick burial chamber built to imitate the wooden structure that became popular since the late Tang period was usually understood as a mimicry of the aboveground residence. Its more and more elaborate construction toward the Jin period was also often described as representing the maturity of the “wooden architecture in brick.” In this paper, however, I argue that the increasing elaboration of the form, in fact, indicates a changing meaning of the tombs. To this end, this paper investigates the “wooden architecture in brick” built in the 12th-century tombs of the Duan family in Jishan, Shanxi province from two interrelated viewpoints—that of the fabricated world of the tomb owner and that of the realistic world of the burial chamber. I suggest that the complicated style of “wooden architecture in brick” does not mean a more magnificent imitation of the aboveground residence. Rather, when considered with other decorations in the chamber, the burial space was constructed for the deceased with reference to a temple, or a shrine. This suggested reference thus turns the chamber into a space of the deity, where the tomb master was revered, indeed, as a deity.

Antiquity Or Innovation? Architecture, Sculptures And Murals In Southern Shanxi Under The Yuan Dynasty Abstract The dissertation analyzes the different forms of art - architecture, murals and sculptures - produced in Southern Shanxi from the beginning of the fourteenth century to the early of Ming. The dissertation starts with a case study on the history of Guangshengsi, one of the most prestigious Buddhist monasteries in the region, and one of the best-preserved Yuan architectural complexes of all China. It then examines the extant Yuan architecture of Southern Shanxi, most of which were constructed in two types of structures, diantang and tingtang. It was the tingtang structure that gained increasingly popularity in the first half of the fourteenth century. Surviving Yuan buildings in Southern Shanxi belonged to religious institutions of various kinds, Buddhist and Daoist monasteries, temples and shrines of local beliefs. In many cases, these buildings were decorated with murals and contained religious images in various forms. Unfortunately, because of their high artistic achievements and with few exceptions, murals and sculptures were either lost or found their way to the collections of private collectors and museums.

Advances in Social Science, Education and Humanities Research, volume 294 6th International Education, Economics, Social Science, Arts, Sports and Management Engineering Conference (IEESASM 2018) Research Status and Trends of Agricultural Plant Protection Modernization in Shanxi Province Yitong Yuan 1, Qi Li2 1Faculty of International Trade, Shanxi University of Finance and Economics, Taiyuan, Shanxi, China 2Faculty of Finance &Banking, Shanxi University of Finance and Economics, Taiyuan, Shanxi, China Keywords: plant protection; drone; aerial application; application status Abstract: With the implementation of the strategy of “rejuvenating the country through science and technology”, the contribution rate of agricultural science and technology progress in China has increased year by year, and the introduction and promotion of agricultural technology has further promoted the development of agricultural modernization. The level of mechanization of crops in Shanxi Province has been continuously improved, and the contribution of plant protection drones is particularly significant. Plant protection drones have been demonstrated and promoted in Shanxi Province owing to their flexibility, safety and efficiency, and significant pest control effects. This paper mainly summarizes the application situation of plant protection drones in crops and the development prospects in Shanxi Province, and proposes relevant countermeasures and suggestions for the constraints in the promotion process, in order to provide reference for subsequent research and application. 1. Introduction Plant protection involves China's food security, ecological security and agricultural harvest, and plays a key role in China's agricultural production. China has 1.8 billion mu of farmland, and the annual demand for plant protection is very large. However, the traditional method of application is inefficient and the labor cost is high.
