  • “Can't Help Singing”: the “Modern” Opera Diva In
“CAN’T HELP SINGING”: THE “MODERN” OPERA DIVA IN HOLLYWOOD FILM, 1930–1950 Gina Bombola A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music in the College of Arts and Sciences. Chapel Hill 2017 Approved by: Annegret Fauser Tim Carter Mark Katz Chérie Rivers Ndaliko Jocelyn Neal ©2017 Gina Bombola ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Gina Bombola: “Can’t Help Singing”: The “Modern” Opera Diva in Hollywood Film, 1930–1950 (Under the direction of Annegret Fauser) Following the release of Columbia Pictures’ surprise smash hit, One Night of Love (1934), major Hollywood studios sought to cash in on the public’s burgeoning interest in films featuring opera singers. For a brief period thereafter, renowned Metropolitan Opera artists such as Grace Moore and Lily Pons fared well at the box office, bringing “elite” musical culture to general audiences for a relatively inexpensive price. By the 1940s, however, the studios began grooming their own operatic actresses instead of transplanting celebrities from the stage. Stars such as Deanna Durbin, Kathryn Grayson, and Jane Powell thereby became ambassadors of opera from the highly commercial studio lot. My dissertation traces the shifts in film production and marketing of operatic singers in association with the rise of such cultural phenomena as the music-appreciation movement, all contextualized within the changing social and political landscapes of the United States spanning the Great Depression to the Cold War. Drawing on a variety of methodologies—including, among others, archival research, film analysis, feminist criticisms, and social theory—I argue that Hollywood framed opera as less of a European theatrical art performed in elite venues and more of a democratic, albeit still white, musical tradition that could be sung by talented individuals in any location.

  • Century Operas on Vocal Pedagogy
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE IMPACT OF GENRE FUSION AND IMPROVISATIONAL ELEMENTS IN 21ST- CENTURY OPERAS ON VOCAL PEDAGOGY AND PERFORMANCE PRACTICE Sequina DuBose, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2019 Dissertation directed by: Professor Carmen Balthrop, Chair, Voice/Opera Division School of Music In the 21st century, opera composers are expanding beyond traditional boundaries by incorporating improvisatory elements and musical style elements from non-classical genres. The purpose of this study is to point to the impact these trends will have on vocal pedagogy and performance practice. The opening chapters of the dissertation provide historical context by examining the role of improvisation in the Baroque era and beyond, along with details concerning key shifts in audience culture, vocal aesthetic and performance practice throughout history. Chapter two also incorporates narratives from key industry practitioners, voice pedagogue Dr. Rachelle Fleming, and American Opera Projects Artistic Director, Mila Henry. Chapter three consists of a discussion of the research methodology and the key researchers and methodologists that influenced the study. This study is a narrative inquiry that employs an analysis of narrative approach and paradigmatic reasoning in its analysis, inducing themes and relationships between the concepts that reveal themselves in the data and literature. Chapter four includes narrative research and analysis based on interviews that have been conducted with composers and singers from four innovative operas: Charlie Parker’s Yardbird (Daniel Schynder), I Dream: A Rhythm and Blues Opera (Douglas Tappin), Blue Viola (Peter Hilliard), and The Mile-Long Opera: a biography of 7 o’clock (David Lang; the composer intentionally uses lowercase script in the titles of his works).

  • The Shrinking Opera Diva: the Impact of Sociocultural Changes Upon the Casting
THE SHRINKING OPERA DIVA: THE IMPACT OF SOCIOCULTURAL CHANGES UPON THE CASTING OF WOMEN IN THE 20TH AND 21ST CENTURIES Lauren Nicole McNeese Feldman, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2017 APPROVED: Stephen Morscheck, Major Professor Carol Wilson, Committee Member Stephen Austin, Committee Member and Chair of the Division of Vocal Studies Benjamin Brand, Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music John Richmond, Dean of the College of Music Victor Prybutok, Vice Provost of the Toulouse Graduate School Feldman, Lauren Nicole McNeese. The Shrinking Opera Diva: The Impact of Sociocultural Changes upon the Casting of Women in the 20th and 21st Centuries. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2017, 56 pp., 8 figures, references, 36 titles. For most of the twentieth century, opera singers were not beholden to the ideal physical standard of women dictated by popular culture, but rather focused on serving the music and perfecting their artistry. Unprecedented sociocultural changes throughout the twentieth century exposed the shifting ideals of each generation and how they were promoted through mass media and advertising. This thesis surveys the time period of the 1890s to the present day for the purpose of analyzing cultural trends, philosophies and technologies that shaped the century. Societal pressure to make the body a project and the focus of one's own intense attention now reflects back onto the opera stage where audience members expect to see what society has dictated to be an acceptable female form. Artistic and stage directors are influenced by society's decree that only thin is beautiful, imbedding into the mindset of the art form notions that now affect how female professional opera singers are depicted and even employed.

  • Irish Culture in Britain a Centenary Celebration
Irish Culture in Britain A Centenary Celebration Festival Artistic Director John Gilhooly Supported by Culture Ireland as part of the Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme A Message from President Michael D. Higgins a mhaith liom tréaslú leo siúd a d’eagraigh an mórcheolchoirm seo anocht agus, dar ndóigh, leis na ceoltóirí, damhsóirí agus na h-ealaínteoirí ar fad atá ag glacadh páirt sa chéiliúradh céad bhliain seo B den chultúr Ghaelach sa Bhreatain. I would like to extend my congratulations to the organisers and many artists involved in tonight’s Gala Concert, Irish Culture in Britain: A Centenary Celebration. If it is in the shadow of each other we live, it is in the cultural space we celebrate our heritage of words and music, a heritage in which we are both intertwined. As we commemorate the courage, dignity and ideals that characterised the events and people of 1916, we also celebrate the depth of connection between Ireland and Britain. Tonight you celebrate not only the rich cultural tradition across these islands, but also its contemporary expression, our new imaginings, and the many creative ways to sustain the artistic work that will form the next chapter of our shared story. Sabina and I would like to thank and congratulate all of those involved in tonight’s performance for their dedication and hard work in bringing about such a special evening, and in particular to John Gilhooly, who has made such an important contribution to the Ireland 2016 centenary programme. I wish to also congratulate Ann Murray on the presentation of the Wigmore Medal, in recognition of her significant international career.

  • Diva Performativity: Female Body and Voice Through
DIVA PERFORMATIVITY: FEMALE BODY AND VOICE THROUGH EURO-CLASSICAL VOCAL PEDAGOGY A Thesis by HANNAH P. ADAMY Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Chair of Committee, Kirsten Pullen Committee Members, Harris Berger Kimberly Kattari Daniel Humphrey Head of Department, Donnalee Dox May 2015 Major Subject: Performance Studies Copyright 2015 Hannah P. Adamy ABSTRACT Opera divas are stereotypically temperamental, but many singers learn diva behaviors through Euro-classical vocal pedagogy. Two conditions of opera vocal training contribute to performances of diva identity. First, opera singers are intimately tied to their characters through the music; they develop their voices in order to perform that music. Secondly, characters, thus opera divas, exist forever in their most excessive, vulnerable states. Consequently, the diva persona is not innate, but a Butlerian performativity. In this thesis, I explore how Euro-classical vocal practice marks and teaches heteronormativity in female opera singers. In addition, I survey how Euro- classical vocal training informs current opera divas’ relationships to the institution of Euro-classical opera throughout their singing career. In my critique, I use contemporary events in opera, vocal pedagogical texts, ethnography, and my own embodied knowledge informed by my Euro-classical vocal training. I will first detail the many facets that challenge a unified “diva” persona by considering past methods used to theorize “diva” and the legacy of the diva in the Euro- classical music tradition. I continue by analyzing vocal pedagogical texts, detailing the many ways teachers, composers, and singers trained and train the voice, and thus train the diva persona.

  • Where Have the Great Big Wagner Voices Gone?
Where Have The Great Big Wagner Voices Gone? Andrew Moravcsik Many critics, fans and opera professionals agree that the heights attained by Wagner and Verdi singers in the “Golden Age” of the mid-20th century have eroded.1 Today most perceive a severe shortage of great spinto and dramatic opera voices—the vocal types for which Wagner, Verdi, Puccini and other late 19th or early 20th century composers wrote most of their music. These are “great big voices”: the most powerful, expressive and weighty in opera, able to project over a massive orchestra for three to six hours at a stretch, while maintaining the sharp edge, dark resonance and precise diction that express bold and direct emotions.2 In the area of Wagner performance, many have sounded the alarm about this recent decline. Nina Stemme, one of today’s finest Brünnhildes, speaks for many when she describes Wagnerian standards seventy-five years ago: “Flagstad and Melchior really ruined everything for later Wagner singers. No one today comes close: we can only modestly attempt to approach the score in other ways.”3 At the Metropolitan Opera, a house that consistently attracts the world’s best singers, the late 1930s and early 1940s are almost unanimously viewed, in Paul Jackson’s words, as a “concurrence of artists and repertory which finds no equal within memory.” Wagnerian singers of this period are “benchmarks of performance history.”4 Table 1 compares cast lists during five three-year periods over the past century—illustrating how, with a few individual exceptions, quality has generally declined.5 This paper presents preliminary results from the first academic study to examine this perceived decline.
