  • Level 42 Highlights from Retroglide
Level 42 highlights from retroglide Retroglide was released in September 2006 and was the first Level 42 album in twelve years. Although the album featured all the supporting musicians from the current Level 42 live band (Gary Husband, Lyndon Connah, Nathan King, Sean Freeman) as well as original keyboard player Mike Lindup, it was written solely by Mark King and Boon Gould. The album was released on the W14 label, part of the Universal group and featured artwork from Alan Brooks, who had created the artwork for many of the band’s early records. The cover art also saw the reappearance of the ‘princess’, who was featured on the cover of the first Level 42 record. Retroglide was eagerly anticipated by the group’s fanbase, who were hungry for new material from the band. The resulting album updated the classic Level 42 sound, although certain trademarks - such as King’s slap bass playing and the use of additional sequenced bass parts remained. Others, such as Lindup’s falsetto backing vocals were for the most part absent since at the point that he rejoined the band the album was almost complete. Although Retroglide was not a large scale commercial success, it quickly became popular with fans, and the new songs were well-received on the subsequent tour, which featured Mike Lindup now firmly back in the fold. The band toured in support of the album in Autumn of 2006 and released a Retroglide Live DVD the following year. ‘Dive Into The Sun’ Intro The opening track ‘Dive Into The Sun’ is classic Level 42 and is driven by a powerful riff-based groove from King.

Phil Moore's first Bowerbirds album since 2012 is an artifact of transition, a domino effect of doors closing and Moore stumbling headfirst into the uncertainty of what comes after a life fundamentally changes. Like a polaroid slowly swimming into focus, "becalmyounglovers" reconciles the memories of yourself in relation to another person, and then what's unearthed when you're left to face your identity alone - and which one of those selves is true? Written and recorded mainly in an isolated cabin hand built by Moore and his ex-partner, out in Siler City, North Carolina, "becalmyounglovers" chronicles a long-term relationship's death rattle, inevitable breakup, and its immediate aftermath - and Moore's getting to understand himself better in the process.

  • Mambo Nassau : 80/82 the Grigri Years
MAMBO NASSAU : 80/82 THE GRIGRI YEARS... After touring to promote « Press Color », her debut album, with a funk band, Lizzy Mercier Descloux traveled to Europe with companion•film•maker Seth Til- lett. They worked in Italy on a serie of short films where she played Anna Mag- nani, Suzanna Agnelli, filmed Renzo Rossellini at Cinecitta about the Emerginati movement, met Federico Fellini during the filming of « Cita della donna », discov- ered the label Ocora (traditional music from all around the world) and with all this in mind started writing songs with help of drummer Bill Perry. In Paris they audi- tionned many african musicians cause after wild child funk the idea was to make a record malaxating african roots music, french buzz vocals, albatross swing and some bizarre soundtracks. The record was made in Nassau, Bahamas at Compass point, Island Records studios under kindness support of Chris Black- well. Walli Badarou who worked there as a house musician with Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, joined Lizzy’s band. Steve Stanley a young engineer from Jamaica who was also working on Grace Jones’s album, produced the sound, he later also produced Tom Tom Club, Third World and lots of Island records. « Mambo Nassau » was all instinctive pulsations, improvized energy. Each song is an attempt to mix the urban vibes of city like New York, raw tempo and acro- batic drum beats, african harmonies, hirsute guitars, heavy pulse of bass lines, anachronistic chants, derisive laughter, a blissfull ignorance of the rules of good taste. Music to snatch and glean with a big black sun in the middle of it.
