Mambo Nassau : 80/82 the Grigri Years MAMBO NASSAU : 80/82 THE GRIGRI YEARS... After touring to promote « Press Color », her debut album, with a funk band, Lizzy Mercier Descloux traveled to Europe with companion•film•maker Seth Til- lett. They worked in Italy on a serie of short films where she played Anna Mag- nani, Suzanna Agnelli, filmed Renzo Rossellini at Cinecitta about the Emerginati movement, met Federico Fellini during the filming of « Cita della donna », discov- ered the label Ocora (traditional music from all around the world) and with all this in mind started writing songs with help of drummer Bill Perry. In Paris they audi- tionned many african musicians cause after wild child funk the idea was to make a record malaxating african roots music, french buzz vocals, albatross swing and some bizarre soundtracks. The record was made in Nassau, Bahamas at Compass point, Island Records studios under kindness support of Chris Black- well. Walli Badarou who worked there as a house musician with Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, joined Lizzy’s band. Steve Stanley a young engineer from Jamaica who was also working on Grace Jones’s album, produced the sound, he later also produced Tom Tom Club, Third World and lots of Island records. « Mambo Nassau » was all instinctive pulsations, improvized energy. Each song is an attempt to mix the urban vibes of city like New York, raw tempo and acro- batic drum beats, african harmonies, hirsute guitars, heavy pulse of bass lines, anachronistic chants, derisive laughter, a blissfull ignorance of the rules of good taste. Music to snatch and glean with a big black sun in the middle of it. World music was not in the cards, it was a step by step adventure, everyday was a sur- prise, an uncompromizing ride, a motherfucking hot stew and they had the ocean to get lost. Eric Clapton, who was recording next door, showed Lizzy his legendary guitars and she sang him an Edith Piaf Song. Nassau is an island for Les millionnaires, drug center, casinos, american ladies looking for sex but Lizzy and the band lived like ermits in the studio, outside Lee Perry was talking to his tree and FIVE TROUBLES MAMBO IT’S YOU SORT OF I’m a trouble alone one Its you sort of I’m trouble to you two It’s you j’ai la dance de St Guy three I kinda feel something hot in my back Chut, chut, chut you bore four Holding me dumb, hoarse, hoarse, hoarse and worst I’m no mascotte in Macao I don’t know why Or an amp fuzz in Las Vegas It’s like letting it go for its shadow A rififi at Chac Mool Beach It’s you sort of When I sing “my darling spinning top” It’s you I kinda feel something scoring my throat I’m a trouble alone one Feel, feel I’m trouble to you two Holding me wet, wet, rough LIZZY j’ai la dance de St Guy three It’s pure gold running on purpose MERCIER Chut, chut, chut you bore four It’s you sort of DESCLOUX This is for real my babe jive five I kinda feel something not in my throat MAMBO NASSAU It’s you sort of Lizzy Mercier Descloux 1981 Its you © 2004 ZE Multimedia Music Lizzy Mercier Descloux 1981 © 2004 ZE Multimedia Music ROOM MATE Lazy, lazy , lazy Cue me Cue me I’m mixed up Mix it up Leaky, leaky, leaky Cue me Cue me I’m mixed up Mix it up Dizzy just like Just like the whirling dervishes Diva just like Orianna Fallacci Lava, lava, lava Cue me Cue me I’m mixed up Mix it up Sqeamish just like, just like The whirling dervishes Rapper, just like Orianna Fallacci Lizzy Mercier Descloux 1981 © 2004 ZE Multimedia Music SPORT SPOOTNIKS Ah cha cha cha, in the Pampa Ah chi chi chi, look in the arena Oh aie aie aie, there’s pimps Oh aie aie aie, los caballeros Ah cha cha cha, a chartless life Ah chi chi chi, los picadores Oh aie aie aie, a cheerless fight Ah aie aie aie, they grow grow Eh matadwarf Eh matadwarf There’s specialist They’re perverted No they’re spootnicks No they’re spootniks Spootnicks Perverted ?

It was by the Disco Dub Band; on the Movers label; an extreme reworking of the O’Jays’ For The Love of Money. Ar- ranged and produced by journalist Davitt Sigerson, it featured steals of James Brown gui- tar motifs, free jazz traces, and stripped down, dubbed out disco. Its reverberations would be felt for many years. Five years on, consciously or not, it could certainly be felt haunting the dancehall that was home to ZE’s Mutant Disco revolution. ZE by that time was ready to burst overground in a riot of colour. A perverse over-the-top Hollywood musical spectacular to complement the grainier, underground pop that could equate to the black and white French new wave films of tortured New York noir novels.

  • 1. Restless Creature (Brendan Gallagher) This Album Is to Celebrate 50 Years As a Guitar Player, Mostly Covers with a Coupla My Tunes Thrown In
    1. Restless Creature (Brendan Gallagher) This album is to celebrate 50 years as a guitar player, mostly covers with a coupla my tunes thrown in. My working title was Some Bloke With A Guitar, a pithy quote from fellow Dead Marine band member Bow Campbell. He was a late substitution one evening for a gig at an inner city Sydney venue and the pub owner wrote just that on the sandwich board out front. But I decided it was bit too glib, and arrived at Restless Creature instead, a term my mother applied to myself and some of my brothers when she was mystified by our apparent purposelessness. Brother #5 Tim and I resolved early on that we would start a band and, as the do as you like kids, another of mum’s descriptors, I started teaching myself on brother #4 Bob’s guitar, and Tim bought a drum kit. We set the kit up just like a photo on an album cover (much like The Shaggs I guess) and both learnt to play by listening to fave Beatles and Stones records on the home stereo and figuring out, by torturous trial and error, what it was that Ringo and Charlie were doing. So I wrote a song called Restless Creature, somewhat autobiographical, but a familiar story to other artists I’m sure, and, true to my mum’s various folksy monikers (oh, I forgot pig-headed) I played everything. I think this may be my debut playing double bass on a record. Recorded at Bondi Pavilion Studio 1 and Declan Kelly’s The Nest.
