Heah** T HE TERM "MALAYA" COVERS what are now two distinct political units: the fully independent Federation of Malaya and the semi-independent State of Singapore, which have emerged from a tangle of British settlements and colonies and British-protected Malay states. The State of Singapore has sprung from the Crown Colony of Singapore, which between 1826 and 1946 formed part of the larger Crown Colony of the Straits Settle- ments. The two remaining Straits settlements-Penang (includ- ing Province Wellesley) and Malacca-together with nine Malay states' have become the Federation of Malaya. Although Penang and Malacca, as British territories, have a very different legal history from that of the Malay states, their welding together into a political unit has been followed by legislation giving statu- tory foundation for the application of the English common law throughout the Federation; the historical differences, then, have lost their practical point. -

With the closure of borders, industry players should now realize that they cannot rely and focus too much on international receipts but should also give equal balance attention to local tourist and tourism products. Hence, urgent steps must be taken by the government to reduce the impact of this outbreak on the country’s economy, by introducing measures to boost domestic tourism and to satisfy the cravings of the tourism needs of the population. It is not an understatement that Malaysians often look for tourists’ destinations outside Malaysia for fun and adventure, ignoring the fact that Malaysia has a lot to offer to tourist in terms of sun, sea, culture, heritage, gastronomy, and adventure. National geography programs like “Tribal Chef” demonstrate how “experiential tourism” resonates with the young and adventurous, international and Malaysian alike. The main purpose of this paper is to give an insight about the effect of Covid-19 pandemic to the tourism and hospitality services industry in Malaysia. What is the immediate impact of Covid-19 pandemic on Malaysia’s tourism industry? What are the initiatives (stimulus package) taken by the Malaysian government in order to ensure tourism sustainability during Covid-19 pandemic? How to boost tourist confidence? How to revive Malaysia’s tourism industry? How local government agencies can help in promoting and coordinating domestic tourism? These are some of the questions which a response is provided in the paper. -

Term for Citizen(s): Malaysian(s). Capital: Since 1999 Putrajaya (25 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur) Click to Enlarge Image has been the administrative capital and seat of government. Parliament still meets in Kuala Lumpur, but most ministries are located in Putrajaya. Major Cities: Kuala Lumpur is the only city with a population greater than 1 million persons (1,305,792 according to the most recent census in 2000). Other major cities include Johor Bahru (642,944), Ipoh (536,832), and Klang (626,699). Independence: Peninsular Malaysia attained independence as the Federation of Malaya on August 31, 1957. Later, two states on the island of Borneo—Sabah and Sarawak—joined the federation to form Malaysia on September 16, 1963. Public Holidays: Many public holidays are observed only in particular states, and the dates of Hindu and Islamic holidays vary because they are based on lunar calendars. This study employs the monetary-portfolio balance exchange rate model and its unrestricted version in the analysis of Malaysian Ringgit during the post- Bretton Wood era (1991M1–2012M12), before and after the subprime crisis. We compare two Artificial Neural Network (ANN) estimation procedures (MLFN and GRNN) with the random walks (RW) and the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) methods. The out-of- sample forecasting assessment reveals the following. First, the unrestricted model has superior forecasting performance compared to the original model during the 24-month forecasting horizon. Second, the ANNs have outperformed both the RW and VAR forecasts in all cases. Third, the MLFNs consistently outperform the GRNNs in both exchange rate models in all evaluation criteria. Fourth, forecasting performance is weakened when the post-subprime crisis period was included. In brief, economic fundamentals are still vital in forecasting the Malaysian Ringgit, but the monetary mechanism may not sufficiently work through foreign exchange adjustments in the short run due to global uncertainties. These findings are beneficial for policy making, investment modelling, and corporate planning. -

How Exchange Rates Affect Agricultural Markets Introduction The exchange rate between two currencies specifies how much one currency is worth in terms of the other. The Canadian exchange rate impacts the competitiveness of the agriculture sector by affecting prices of agriculture products and inputs and, therefore, farms’ profits. This module provides an overview of what is an exchange rate, what factors determine the exchange rate, the effects of changes in exchange rates on agricultural markets, and how to manage the risk of currency exchange fluctuation. Although the major market for currency in the world is FOREX, other markets like CME (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) or CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange) offer currency exchange rate products. The currency abbreviation or currency symbol for the Canadian dollar is CAD and for the US dollar is USD. In this article, C$ and US$ represent the Canadian and the US dollar respectively, with the dollar sign. What is the Exchange Rate? The exchange rate is the rate in which one currency of one country is valued relative to the currency of another country. There are two ways to express exchange rates: • The number of units of foreign currency necessary to purchase one unit of domestic currency. For example, an exchange rate of 0.9312 means US$ 0.9312 would be needed to purchase one Canadian dollar. or • The number of units of domestic currency necessary to purchase one unit of foreign currency. For example, the 0.9312 rate could also be expressed as requiring C$1.0739 to buy one US dollar. In other words, $0.9312 is really 1/1.0739 and 1.0739 is really 1/0.9312. -

General 1.1 Before 1 January 1949, the principal form of nationality was British subject status, which was obtained by virtue of a connection with a place within the Crown's dominions. On and after this date, the main form of nationality was citizenship of the UK and Colonies, which was obtained by virtue of a connection with a place within the UK and Colonies. 2. Meaning of the expression 2.1 On 1 January 1949, all the territories within the Crown's dominions came within the UK and Colonies except for the Dominions of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Newfoundland, India, Pakistan and Ceylon (see "DOMINIONS") and Southern Rhodesia, which were identified by s.1(3) of the BNA 1948 as independent Commonwealth countries. Section 32(1) of the 1948 Act defined "colony" as excluding any such country. Also excluded from the UK and Colonies was Southern Ireland, although it was not an independent Commonwealth country. 2.2 For the purposes of the BNA 1948, the UK included Northern Ireland and, as of 10 February 1972, the Island of Rockall, but excluded the Channel Islands and Isle of Man which, under s.32(1), were colonies. 2.3 The significance of a territory which came within the UK and Colonies was, of course, that by virtue of a connection with such a territory a person could become a CUKC. Persons who, prior to 1 January 1949, had become British subjects by birth, naturalisation, annexation or descent as a result of a connection with a territory which, on that date, came within the UK and Colonies were automatically re- classified as CUKCs (s.12(1)-(2)). -

Macroprudential frameworks: Implementation, and relationship with other policies – Malaysia Central Bank of Malaysia Abstract Given the increasing complexity and interconnectedness of the financial system, central banks have broadened their mandates and policy toolkit to address emerging risks to financial stability. This paper describes Malaysia’s experience in establishing its macroprudential framework. It highlights the institutional and governance arrangements made to support decision-making, and policy formulation to avert or reduce risks to financial stability. It also discusses the importance of coordinating different policy tools, such as monetary, macroprudential and fiscal measures, to balance policy trade-offs. Drawing on Malaysia’s experience in implementing household- and property-related macroprudential measures, the paper argues that recalibration of existing policies hinges on the objectives and circumstances of individual jurisdictions. Increased access to previously remote tropical for- est following logging and changes in land-use facilitates hunting of elusive wild cattle in Borneo, which preferentially select secluded habitat. We collated the first population parameters for the Endangered Bornean banteng Bos javanicus lowi and developed population models to simulate the effect of different hunting offtake rates on survival and the recovery of the population using reintroduced captive-bred individuals. Our findings suggest that the banteng population in Sabah is geographically divided into 4 management units based on connectivity: the Northeast, Sipitang (West), Central and Southeast, which all require active management to prevent further population decline and local extinction. -
