THE DUBLINERS 50 Jahre Jubiläumstour The Dubliners: John Sheahan, Seán Cannon, Eamonn Campbell, Patsy Watchorn, Gerry O´Connor (Änderungen vorbehalten) Ab Herbst 2012 feiern The Dubliners ihr Jubiläum auf Deutschlands Bühnen. 50 Jahre Irish-Folk Geschichte an nur einem Abend! Ein halbes Jahrhundert ist eine lange Zeit. Und ein halbes Jahrhundert auf internationalen Bühnen muss gefeiert werden. Leider liegt über all diesen freudigen Festivitäten der übergroße Schatten des Verlustes von Barney McKenna. Zwar galten die irischen Haudegen immer als unzerstörbar und hatten mit dem Tourmotto „It´s too late to stop now“ auch gleich die passende Begründung parat, aber dennoch müssen wir heute mit großem Bedauern bekannt geben, dass dies die letzte Tournee der Dubliners sein wird. Doch bevor die Wehmut überwiegt, gilt es nun, ein letztes Mal bei den 17 Live Terminen so richtig zu feiern – das wäre ganz in Barneys Sinne! Hier nun für alle Fans und Freunde der persönliche Abschiedsbrief der Band, verfasst von John Sheahan: A Farewell Note from John Sheahan Dear friends, We are celebrating 50 years on the road this year. However, our celebrations have been tinged with great sadness with the recent death of our dear friend and colleague, Barney Mc Kenna. Barney was a founding member of the group, sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. A virtuoso banjo player, a great story teller, he took great pleasure in distorting and twisting the English language with his “Barneyisms”. There was never a dull moment when you were with Barney. 50 years on the road is a significant landmark in the band’s career. There are times in life when things reach a natural finishing point. Barney and I had spoken about this, and it was his feeling that we should take a break from touring at the end of this year. It is with a great sense of nostalgia that I have to tell you that this will be the last Dubliners concert tour of Germany. I will cherish fond memories of our times in Germany. I will miss the camaraderie, the parties and the late nights shared with so many wonderful people. I would like to thank our promoter Karsten Jahnke and all our loyal fans who have supported us over our long career. Troubled Voices A Troubles Archive Essay Martin Dowling Cover Image: Joseph McWilliams - Twelfth March (1991) From the collection of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland About the Author Martin Dowling is a historian, sociologist, and fiddle player, and lecturer in Irish Traditional Music in the School of Music and Sonic Arts in Queen’s University of Belfast. Martin has performed internationally with his wife, flute player and singer Christine Dowling. He teaches fiddle regularly at Scoil Samhradh Willy Clancy and the South Sligo Summer School, as well as at festivals and workshops in Europe and America. From 1998 until 2004 he was Traditional Arts Officer at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. He is the author of Tenant Right and Agrarian Society in Ulster, 1600-1870 (Irish Academic Press, 1999), and has held postdoctoral fellowships in Queen’s University of Belfast and University College Dublin. Recent publications include “Fiddling for Outcomes: Traditional Music, Social Capital, and Arts Policy in Northern Ireland,” International Journal of Cultural Policy, vol. 14, no 2 (May, 2008); “’Thought-Tormented Music’: Joyce and the Music of the Irish Revival,” James Joyce Quarterly, vol. 44, no. 1 (2008); and “Rambling in the Field of Modern Identity: Some Speculations on Irish Traditional Music,” Radharc: a Journal of Irish and Irish-American Studies, vols. 5-7 (2004-2006), pp. 109-136. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world.
