Gladys Knight FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DECEMBER 8, 2008 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS GLADYS KNIGHT LIVE AT THE RIVER ROCK SHOW THEATRE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13 The great ones endure and Gladys Knight has long been one of the greatest. Very few singers over the last fifty years have matched her unassailable artistry. This seven-time Grammy winner has enjoyed #1 hits in pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary and has triumphed in film, television and live performance. Georgia born, Knight began performing gospel music at age four in the Mount Mariah Baptist Church and sang as a guest soloist with the Morris Brown College Choir. Three years later, she along with her brother Bubba, her sister Brenda and her cousins William and Elenor Guest formed The Pips. After Brenda and Elenor left, her cousin Edward Patten and good friend Langston George joined the group which was then renamed Gladys Knight & The Pips. The group released their first album in 1960 when Knight was just sixteen. She sang lead while The Pips provided lush harmonies and graceful choreography … soon the group found themselves achieving icon status having recorded some of the most memorable songs including “Every Beat of My Heart,” “Letter Full of Tears,” “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” "The Nitty Gritty" and “If I Were Your Woman” … all of which set the stage for an amazing run in the mid-1970s with several Top Ten Gold certified singles. Additional hits included “Friendship Train,” “Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye),” “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination” and “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me.” All told, Knight has recorded more than thirty-eight albums over the years including four solo albums during the past decade. In 2006, she released her most recent album, Before Me … a heartfelt homage to the great legends of song who paved the way for her to become a legendary performer in her own right including Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and Lena Horne. Knight’s involvement in other creative undertakings, business ventures and humanitarian activities has been extensive and has brought her honours from industry and community alike. She has taken on several acting roles including the CBS sitcom, “Charlie & Company” opposite Flip Wilson which aired in 1985. Today, she helps oversee her busy career from the Las Vegas headquarters of Shakeji, Inc. which is her personal entertainment corporation. Gladys Knight will be returning to the River Rock Casino Resort for one engagement only in February, 2009. Tickets for the show are $79, $89, $99, $109 & $119. Knight has recorded two No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 singles, 11 No. 1 R&B singles and six No. 1 R&B albums. Knight was born in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1952 at the age of 7, she won Ted Mac’s The Original Amateur Hour TV show contest. This event marked her first encounter with fame. Later that year, she formed a musical group named “the Pips” with her brother, sister and cousins. By the end of the decade, the act had begun to tour and eventually her sister and one of her cousins were replaced. By 1961, the group released a single on the tiny Atlanta Huntom label called “Every Beat of My Heart.” In 1966, Gladys Night and the Pips signed on with Motown Records with whom they scored several major hit singles, including “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “Take Me in Your Arms and Love Me,” and “If I Were Your Woman.” In 1973, they left Motown for a better deal with Buddah Records. Here they achieved significant success with hits such as the Grammy Award-winning track “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “I’ve Got to Use My Imagination” and “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me.” The group continued to have hits until the late 1970s when they were forced to record separately due to legal issues, resulting in Knight’s first solo LP recordings – “Miss Gladys Knight” on Buddah Records in 1978 and “Gladys Knight” on Columbia Records in 1979.

  • A Soulful Sound Wendy Renee Delights Audiences with Her Vocals
M IT’S ALL ABOUT YOU By Jean Amodea A Soulful Sound Wendy Renee delights audiences with her vocals endy Renee abandoned the cold winters of Minneapolis, Minnesota for the sunshine of Southwest Florida, packing up her passion for singing, along with her personal belongings for the cross-country migration. That was eight years ago, and since then, the professional singer Whas delighted local audiences with her vocals. The multitalented beauty whom has modeled, acted and performed in musical theater was born into a home filled with music; never questioning that singing would be her life’s vocation. “My earliest memory was singing with both my parents, then at school events where I would organize talent shows, directing and casting and costuming. I even came up with a one- girl show in fourth grade wearing a turtle costume and performed in the library for whoever wanted to watch me,” Renee said, of her musical upbringing. Over the years, she developed an extensive repertoire, singing The Great American Songbook standards to the soulful music of her favorite influences, legends Etta James and the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald to the ‘60s music of Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross and Whitney Houston. “I love to learn new material and look for the talent in every generation of music; it also helps me from getting bored. I love singing the music of Adele, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Amy Winehouse and Bruno Mars.” Renee calls opening for Etta James, in a Minneapolis concert where she performed an opening set of jump, swing and blues tunes, one of her most memorable performances.

Their support, both in the studio and onstage, has lent Knight’s music much of its warmth and family feeling - rare qualities in any kind of popular music and even rarer in such strong rock and soul terms. Knight made her public singing debut at Mount Mariah Baptist Church, in Atlanta - she was 4 years old. At 7, she won first prize on Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour TV show. She got together with her brother Merald, sister Brenda, and cousins James “ Pip” Woods, William Guest and his sister Elenor to tour with Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke in the late ’50s. Following a failed 1957 Brunswick Records debut, Elenor and Brenda left to get married and were re placed by yet another cousin, Edward Pat ten, and Langston George. This was the lineup that scored the group’s first hit sin gle, 1961’s “Every Beat of My Heart,” a 9-year-old song by Hall of Famer Johnny Otis.
