“What a load of crap. Next time, mate, keep your drug tripping private.” JACQUES A person on Facebook. STEWART “What utter drivel” Another person on Facebook. “I may be in the minority here, but I find these editorial pieces to be completely unreadable garbage.” Guess where that one came from. “No, you’re not. Honestly, I think of this the same Bond thinks of his obituary by M.” Chap above’s made a chum. This might be what Facebook is for. That’s rather lovely. Isn’t the internet super? “I don’t get it either and I don’t have the guts to say it because I fear their rhetoric or they’d might just ignore me. After reading one of these I feel like I’ve walked in on a Specter round table meeting of which I do not belong. I suppose I’m less a Bond fan because I haven’t read all the novels. I just figured these were for the fans who’ve read all the novels including the continuation ones, fan’s of literary Bond instead of the films. They leave me wondering if I can even read or if I even have a grasp of the language itself.” No comment. This ebook is not for sale but only available as a free download at Commanderbond.net. 1 Concert 3 – Blockbusters & Beethoven January 25, 2020
Concert 3 – Blockbusters & Beethoven January 25, 2020 Leonore Overture No. 3, op. 72a—Ludwig van Beethoven While today, opera—for any number of reasons—is not heard as frequently as the symphony orchestra, before the twentieth century it dominated the musical scene. Only gradually did permanent instrumental ensembles evolve that focused upon symphonies and the like. Composers made their reputations, or not, as composers of opera, and that’s what the nobility (who paid the bills) largely wanted to hear. And they wanted to hear the latest ones—not last year’s. And so, when Beethoven arrived in Vienna as a young composer shortly after Mozart’s death, money, reputation, and professional respect lay in that direction. It was only natural that Beethoven aspired to write one. Alas! It was a tortured affair for Beethoven; he labored long over it (and he is famed for revising his work) with more effort than any of his other compositions. He spoke frankly of his frustration, and claimed a “martyr’s crown” for the pain it caused him. That there are three versions of the opera and four overtures, alone, speaks volumes about the process of its genesis. He began in 1804, with the wildly popular French “rescue operas” of Cherubini and Méhul as models. The genre was a proto-romantic inspiration from the trials and terror of the times of the French Revolution, with heroines and heroes saved from death and disaster in the nick of time. “Heroic” imagery and noble sacrifice fascinated Beethoven—he had just finished the Eroica symphony about that time. -

ATP 2033 – Transcript
The University of Detroit mercy presents another encore presentation of a classic ask the professor radio program today's show takes us back to October 2005. Thank you so much Michael Jayson. This is Ask the Professor, the radio show where you match wits with the University of Detroit Mercy witless professors in an unrehearsed session of questions and answers here in Motown. I'd like to introduce today's panel to you and then our special guest, I should say guests in the plural. So let me start at the far end of the table from the Department of Communication Studies our media maven himself, It's Professor Jerry Curtsinger. The L.S. program. Excellent. I spent about an hour talking about that a little while ago. Trust me, who is the director? It’s Stephen Manning. Manning is. Okay, I know it's shifted. Yes, it did. It really did and I'm here because I'm not in hockey for a change. But we are so glad, but we're so glad that puck is back in our house, I couldn't stand another one of those CBC movies on Saturday night. The worst part is that Mac’s On Third I think is no more, I know. Oh, and we send out condolences first of all to Tony Bruce, and very sadly Tony's mother has passed away. So, again, our deepest sympathies and condolences to the whole Bruce family who always treated us like family. So we're sad to hear that. Truly, I know that the issue is a legalistic one, it's the famous Michigan Liquor Control Board thing that is just__ Poor Tony, so we had hopes and prayers that things work out for Tony and that someday we'll be back down at Mac’s eating some hamburgers and taping some great shows. -

Sent to Jamaica to investigate a suspi- cious disappearance, the British spy James Bond (007) eventually tracks the killer and a previously unknown secret organisation to Crab Key. With the help of an innocent girl called Honey Ryder, famously dressed in a white bikini. Bond confronts the first of many evil geniuses intent on implementing plans for global domination. Dr No, a disfigured but gifted scientist, reveals that he works for SPECTRE (Special Executive for Counter-Intelligence, Terrorism and Revenge and Extortion). The organisation is planning to sabotage the US space programme in nearby Florida in order to wreak havoc and trigger a conflict between East and West. SPECTRE hopes the United States will attack the Soviet Union in retaliation. Bond, after evading capture and assassination, kills Dr No and scuppers the plot. The film was a commercial success, even if the trade press reviews were mixed. With a budget of $1 million it generated nearly $60 million in box office receipts and thus initiated an extraordinary chapter in cinematic history. -
Metaphors of Love in 1946–2016 Billboard Year-End Number-One Songs
Text&Talk 2021; 41(4): 469–491 Salvador Climent* and Marta Coll-Florit All you need is love: metaphors of love in 1946–2016 Billboard year-end number-one songs https://doi.org/10.1515/text-2019-0209 Received June 25, 2019; accepted September 19, 2020; published online October 26, 2020 Abstract: This study examines the use of metaphors, metonymies and meta- phorical similes for love in a corpus of 52 year-end number one hit songs in the USA from 1946 to 2016 according to Billboard charts. The analysis is performed within the framework of Conceptual Metaphor Theory and from quantitative and quali- tative perspectives. Our findings indicate that the theme of romantic love is prevalent in US mainstream pop music over the course of seven decades but shows evolutionary features. Metaphors of love evolve from conventional to novel with a notable increase in both heartbreak and erotic metaphors. Remarkably, the study finds that the two predominant conceptualizations of love in pop songs – which in a significant number of cases overlap – are the following: experiential, originating in the physical proximity of the lovers, and cultural, reflecting possession by one lover and showing a non-egalitarian type of love. Keywords: Conceptual Metaphor Theory; corpus linguistics; metaphor; pop music; romantic love 1 Introduction The central theme of a large number of pop songs is some facet of romantic love. Starr and Waterman (2003: 105–110, 199–200) noted this to be already the case in the Tin Pan Alley era in the USA of the 1920s and 1930s and the trend continued through the 1940s and 1950s, when the entertainment industry grew exponen- tially: “total annual record sales in the United States rose from $191 million in 1951 to $514 million in 1959” (Starr and Waterman 2003: 252). -

17th Biennial Conference of IASPM | Bridge Over Troubled Waters: Challenging Orthodoxies | Gijón 2013 Contents Welome 2 Conference programme 4 Abstracts 24 Panels 133 iaspm2013.espora.es 1 17th Biennial Conference of IASPM | Bridge Over Troubled Waters: Challenging Orthodoxies | Gijón 2013 Dear IASPM Conference Delegates, Welcome to Gijón, and to the 17th biennial IASPM Conference “Bridge over Troubled Waters”, a conference with participants from all over the world with the aim of bridging a gap between disciplines, perspectives and cultural contexts. We have received more than 500 submissions, of which some 300 made it to the programme, together with four outstanding keynote speakers. This Conference consolidates the increasing participation of Spanish delegates in previous conferences since the creation of the Spanish branch of IASPM in 1999, and reinforces the presence of Popular Music Studies at the Spanish universities and research groups. The University of Oviedo is one of the pioneer institutions in the Study of Popular Music in Spain; since the late nineties, this field of study is constantly growing due to the efforts of scholars and students that approach this repertoire from an interdisciplinary perspective. As for the place that hosts the conference, Gijón is an industrial city with an important music scene. I wouldn´t call it the Spanish Liverpool, but some critics called it the Spanish Seattle because it was an important place for the development of “noise music” in Spain during the 1990s. The venue, Laboral, is an exponent of the architecture of the dictatorship. Finished in 1956, it was conceived as a school for war orphans to learn a trade and in 2007 it was remodeled to become a “city for culture”.
