    ARNOLD MITTELMAN Producer/Director 799 Crandon Boulevard, #505 Key Biscayne, FL 33149 [email protected] ARNOLD MITTELMAN is a producer and director with 40 years of theatrical achievement that has resulted in the creation and production of more than 300 artistically diverse plays, musicals and special events. Prior to coming to the world famous Coconut Grove Playhouse in 1985, Mr. Mittelman directed and produced Alone Together at Broadway's Music Box Theatre. Succeeding the esteemed actor José Ferrer as the Producing Artistic Director of Coconut Grove Playhouse, he continued to bring national and international focus to this renowned theater. Mr. Mittelman helped create more than 200 plays, musicals, educational and special events on two stages during his 21-year tenure at the Playhouse. These plays and musicals were highlighted by 28 World or American premieres. This body of work includes three Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights directing their own work for the first time in a major theatrical production: Edward Albee - Seascape; David Auburn - Proof; and Nilo Cruz - Anna In the Tropics. Musical legends Cy Coleman, Charles Strouse, Jerry Herman, Jimmy Buffett, John Kander and Fred Ebb were in residence at the Playhouse to develop world premiere productions. The Coconut Grove Playhouse has also been honored by the participation of librettist/writers Herman Wouk, Alfred Uhry, Jerome Weidman and Terrence McNally. As in SONGS OF PROTEST 1, 2 & 3, we had planned to present an evening filled with amazing performers and powerful songs that have had a historical impact on social justice. When we decided to resume the series virtually, we rethought the concept. With so much going on in our country and the world, we offered the performers the opportunity to write or present an original work about an issue from our current state of affairs.

    PRODUCERS BOOK & PRINT SOURCE LIST Pre-Festival Edition THE 2017 PRODUCERS BOOK A LETTER FROM THE SCREENPLAY & FILM COMPETITION DIRECTORS Hello! Each year, we prepare our annual Producers Book which contains loglines and contact information for the year’s top scripts in our various Script Competitions. Please feel free to reach out to any of the writers listed here to request a copy of their scripts. Also included is our Print Source List containing information for all films selected for the 2017 Festival. This year’s Semifinalists and Finalists were chosen from a field of 9,487 scripts entered in our Screenplay, Digital Series, Playwriting, and Fiction Podcast Competitions. Each year we are amazed by the professional quality and talent that we receive and this year wasn’t any different. The Competition is open to feature-length scripts in the genres of drama, comedy, sci-fi, and horror; teleplay pilots and specs, short scripts, stage plays, fiction podcast scripts, and digital series scripts. Year after year, our strive in programming the Austin Film Festival film slate is to discover and champion the writers and those who can translate amazing stories to the screen. We received over 5,000 film submissions this year and had the task of whittling it down to 182 films that embody our mission and passion for storytelling. It was a harrowing task, but it led to our strongest year of film yet. We’re so proud of this year’s diverse group of filmmakers and unique voices and can’t wait for these works to be seen, shared, and loved.

As such it is concerned with a historic problem ir pci tial :hearv, i.e., how to visualize a perfect human community. Since the turn of the 20th century, we have seen a decline in utopian ~i tera.ture. A variety of commentators, including Mannhein: and Mumford, noted and decried this trend. It seemed ironic to those observers that utopia~s demise would occur when humanity was closest to realizing material abundance for all. My research evaluates this irony. The primary data of my work are drawn from the genre of science fiction. The new locus for utopian thought seems natural enough. Science fiction is a speculative activity and, in its emphasis on science and technology, concerns itself with an area of human activity that has been intimately connected with the idea of progress since the European Enlightenment. A number of scholars including Mumford, Sargent, Suvin, and Williams, have asserted that contemporary utopian thought could be found in science fiction.

    FEBRUARY 2017 WELCOME JIM COX elcome to Picasso at the Lapin Agile! We’re thrilled to kick off 2017 with this funny, fascinating, and endlessly W surprising play. As we begin a new year, we also celebrate the phenomenal successes of 2016. Last year, the Globe broke box office records with hits like Meteor Shower (another Steve Martin comedy) and our acclaimed productions of October Sky and Sense and Sensibility. It was also an outstanding year for philanthropy. Individual donors gave generously to support our mission, and the Globe reaped the benefit of major foundation and government support. Our Arts Engagement Department successfully launched a slate of new programs funded in part by The James Irvine Foundation’s New California Arts Fund, and the National Endowment for the Arts awarded the Globe a major grant to support new play development. In every way, 2016 was a banner year for The Old Globe. We couldn’t imagine a better way to start 2017 than Picasso at the Lapin Agile. Not only does the production mark the welcome return of writer Steve Martin to the Globe, it pairs him with his longtime collaborator—and our Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director—Barry Edelstein. Here, Barry shepherds an all-star cast featuring returning Globe favorites alongside talented performers making their Globe debuts. 2016 will be a tough act to top, but this show bodes well for another banner year of great theatre in Balboa Park. We hope to see you often at the Globe in the coming year!
