Iv Albertine - First Solo Album iv Albertine - First Solo Album “Viv Albertine made a place for girls in music before girl became grrrl” - Courtney Love After twenty five years away from music, influential guitarist and songwriter, Viv Albertine, releases her first solo album ‘The Vermilion Border’ - out 5th November 2012 through Cadiz Music. The album features a renowned bass player on each track, and even reunites Viv with Mick Jones of The Clash, who plays guitar on ‘Confessions of a MILF’. Viv’s former group, The Slits, were one of the first bands within the ‘Punk’ era to draw on - and tour with - different musical genres, and filter them through their music, especially reggae, improvised jazz and free improvisation. The band are considered to be the forerunners of ‘post punk’ and the riot grrrl movements and they - and Viv’s guitar playing - have also been cited as an influence on many bands as diverse as Gang of Four, Sonic Youth, The Beastie Boys, Tricky and Massive Attack, to new bands such as Chapter 24 and Warpaint. Because Viv picked up her Telecaster again in 2007, her 17 year marriage imploded. During the following years she played live, wrote songs and recorded a 4 track EP called ‘Flesh’ - released on Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label. Touring the UK, Viv teamed up with different musicians and began to record again. Viv says of the experience: “I was very bold. I met musicians as I went along and asked them to come and play. I didn‟t know anyone anymore. I just had to work on instinct, if I liked them, I assumed they would be right. And they always were. It was the most fun and exhilarating time of my life. No rules, just the songs and the musicians.” With ‘The Vermilion Border’ (a biological term for the border between the reddish skin of the lip and the more regular skin of the face), Viv is documenting a border crossing in different ways: from the safety of domesticity to the uncertainty of life as an artist; away from the comfort and bustle of family life, towards solitude and introspection. And even the juxtaposition of the featured bass players with her signature trebly guitar-playing is the meeting of two distinct planes. Throughout this exploration, she always has the goal of personal freedom and self expression in her sights. The songs tell a story - with humour and fighting spirit - beginning with anger, moving through disillusionment and finally, at the end of the record, arriving at a breakthrough where she regains her ability to see beauty in the world again. The featured players are; Jack Bruce (Cream), Jenny Lee Lindberg (Warpaint), Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads), Wayne Nunes (Tricky), Glen Matlock (The Sex Pistols), Richard Pike (PVT - Warp Records), Dennis Bovell, Norman Watt Roy (Blockheads, Wilko), Danny Thompson (Nick Drake, John Martyn, Pentangle). Viv is currently composing a verbal score for a collaboration with the Turner nominated artist, Fiona Banner, and writing a book about her life, „Clothes Clothes Clothes, Music Music Music, Boys Boys Boys’ to be published by Faber and Faber in Spring 2014. EXHIBITION ein Film von Joanna Hogg mit Viv Albertine, Liam Gillick & Tom Hiddleston | UK 2013 | 104 Minuten | englische Originalfassung mit deutschen Untertiteln | Fugu Filmverleih | Deutscher Kinostart: 11. Dezember 2014 “It’s in the Walls!”

The upheaval causes anxieties to surface, and wife and performance artist D, struggles to control the personal and creative aspects of her life with H. Dreams, memories, fears, have all imprinted themselves on their home, which exists as a container for their lives and has played such an important role in their relationship. LONG SYNOPSIS Artists D (Viv Albertine) and H (Liam Gillick) are a married couple who have lived together in a West London house for nearly 20 years. It is a modernist house - all verticals, reflecting windows and sliding partitions – and seemingly the ideal residence for two artists who each work independently at home in their separate spaces, occasionally communicating briefly by intercom. Throughout EXHIBITION we see D and H living together, working separately, communicating or failing to communicate – in a series of moments depicting a long-term relationship that sometimes seems to be in meltdown, at other times extremely strong. It’s autumn. H suggests to D that she’s unwilling to discuss her work with him; she says she’s reluctant to expose herself to his criticism.

Tucked away on the b-side of the Sex Pistols’ third single, ‘Pretty Vacant’ (1977), is a cover version of The Stooges’ ‘No Fun’. The song had long been a staple of the Pistols’ live set; on record, however, Johnny Rotten chose to open the track with a diatribe against those attempting to imbue the punk culture he helped instigate with broader socio-economic, cultural or political implications. ‘Here we go now’, he snarled, ‘a sociology lecture, with a bit of psychology, a bit of neurology, a bit of fuckology’.1 The target of Rotten’s ire was the tendency of journalists such as Caroline Coon to underpin punk’s anger with reference to the desperate economic circumstances of the mid-1970s. It was only ‘natural’, Coon had suggested, that a group of ‘deprived London street kids’ such as the Sex Pistols would produce music ‘with a startlingly anti-establishment bias’.2 But if Rotten was not so sure, then academics, journalists and political commenters have – perhaps predictably – tended to side with Coon.

Book Review: Networks of Sound, Style and Subversion: The punk and post-punk worlds of Manchester, London, Liverpool and Sheffield, 1975–80 blogs.lse.ac.uk/lsereviewofbooks/2015/04/22/book-review-networks-of-sound-style-and-subversion-the-punk- and-post-punk-worlds-of-manchester-london-liverpool-and-sheffield-1975-80/ 22/04/2015 This book examines the birth of punk in the UK and its transformation, within a short period of time, into post-punk. Deploying innovative concepts of ‘critical mass’, ‘social networks’ and ‘music worlds’, and using sophisticated techniques of ‘social network analysis’, it teases out the events and mechanisms involved in punk’s ‘micro-mobilisation’, its diffusion across the UK and its transformation in certain city-based strongholds into a variety of interlocking post-punk forms. Alex Hensby thinks this is a fine piece of work; a book that is driven by the author’s palpable knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject. Networks of Sound, Style and Subversion: The punk and post-punk worlds of Manchester, London, Liverpool and Sheffield, 1975–80. Nick Crossley. Manchester University Press. February 2015. It might be bad form to begin a book review with praise for another, but one of my favourite reads from last year was Clothes, Music, Boys by Viv Albertine. As a member of the London art college/squatter scene in the mid-1970s which spawned groups such as the Sex Pistols, the Clash and her band the Slits, Albertine’s memoir offers a particularly vivid personal account of how the punk movement assembled itself. On reading, one line in particular stood out: having been being invited to rehearse with Johnny Thunders’s seminal band the Heartbreakers, Albertine wrote “I was scared.

Viv Albertine, Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys, paperback, 421 pages, London: Faber & Faber, 2014. ISBN: 978-0571297757; £14.99. Reviewed by Simon W. Goulding (Freelance, UK) The Literary London Journal, Volume 11 Number 2 (Autumn 2014) It is a truism that history is written by the winners, and even in the punk period this tended to be the men. Jon Savage’s exhaustive account of the period England’s Dreaming (1991) is great on the ale figures, the theories and the art of manipulation, but less good on the women of the period; only Vivienne Westwood comes across as an engaging and engaged figure. All the more reason to admire to Viv Albertine’s new book, which is honest, informative and entertaining. As she says: ‘I’m too outspoken for most people, they think you’re rude if you tell the truth’ (407). Albertine was the eldest child of a single mother; she grew up in Muswell Hill, made it through the secondary schools of the time into the relative haven of Art School. She got a job at Dingwalls, a key music venue of the seventies. She met Mick Jones, shared a squat with Paul Simonon, made friends with Sid Vicious, failed with the first band and then joined The Slits. This then is an account by someone who was there at the beginning of punk: I’ve crossed the line from ‘sexy wild girl just fallen out of bed’ to unpredictable, dangerous, unstable, girl’. Not so appealing. Pippi Longstocking meets Barbarella meets juvenile delinquent.

  • Embodiment, Divinity, and Punk Rock Spirituality in the Music of the Slits
1 Alexandra Apolloni [email protected] Thinking Gender 2009 In the Beginning, there was rhythm: Embodiment, divinity, and punk rock spirituality in the music of The Slits At the opening of the Mystic Fable, Michel de Certeau introduces his readers to the figure of the madwoman. This madwoman is a spiritual figure who occupies an interstitial space, being at once of this world and of the body, while also able to channel the divine. De Certeau’s mad, mystic woman represents an abject body, constructed from humanity’s scraps. She is the embodiment of all that is excessive, and while this places her outside of society, it nonetheless permits her to introduce new possibilities and new means of communicating and speaking. Her words cross lines, existing outside of the modes of speech to which we are accustomed, creating new meanings, resulting in a form of mystic speech.1 While de Certeau’s madwoman was from the 16th Century, I looked to a more recent historical period, attempting to situate a more manifestation of this type of mystic speech in the British punk rock scene of the 1970s. While the self-consciously nihilistic punk movement would seem at face value to have little to no connection with mysticism and religiosity, some women working in punk rock were able to translate punk rock idioms into transgressive, feminist ways of speaking, that, I will argue, can be understood as a form of mystic speech. The Slits, considered among the most iconoclastic punk bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s, construct a musical performance of bodily abjection through the use of musical sounds and particular vocalizations that emphasize the abject female body.
