Brad Brady Madison, MS (no car listed) Mark & Valerie Barton Brandon, MS 1967 Plymouth VIP 1987 Cadillac Sedan DeVille Steve McClintock Brandon, MS 2004 Honda S2000 Monica, Romy & Rico Maldonado Florence, MS 1979 Chevy Camaro Long Way Home (A Corvette’s Journey) Content provided by MCC Member Bob Jackman As many of you who know me already are aware, I love all kinds of cars and always have. Evidence of this can be found in the big cars I own or have owned in the past as well as my collection of 5300 plus models. I preface this short story by saying this lest one would think that my only focus is on Corvettes alone. My ownership of my 1961 Corvette began in 1972 when I painted it for a friend. This friend and I were both Modal A Ford fans and used to work on them together. One day he and his wife went to a car show where she saw the Corvette and wanted it badly so they bought it although my friend really wasn't into other cars other than the Model As. Long story short, after I painted the car for him, and knowing he didn't particularly care for the car, I asked him if he would sell me the car...after checking with his wife, the answer was no. About six months later my friend took a job some 1,000 miles away and again I asked if he would sell it to me before they moved and again the answer was no. As with many things in life, he called me about thirty days after they moved and said that his wife had decided that it was okay for him to sell the car. Bottom line...I had to pay to have the car shipped back the 1,000 miles when it had lived some three miles from us to begin with. Looking back I guess it was predestined for Lori and I to own a Corvette. Growing up, one of my best friend's father was the personnel director of the Corvette plant in St. Louis which is where I am from. My friend and I were in the plant at least once a month watching America's number one sports cars being built from 1954, the first year production started in St. Louis until the early sixties when my friend's father retired. Back then the survival of the Corvette was questioned by the bean counters at GM each year. In 1960, the Corvette achieved sales in excess of 10,000 units for the first time, and which was the benchmark used to determine the make's future. Today it would be hard to imagine the automotive picture without the Corvette but it came very close to not happening. Sometime when you get the chance to see an original older Corvette it's important to know that these old Vettes were virtually hand built without the aid of computers and robots. Tom was a multi-complex man and that is what made him so memorable and special to so many people. He had drive and ambition that showed in everything he did. He fretted, stressed, and worried about everything and was always proud of everyone's efforts and achievements at the end of the day. He loved the Mississippi Classic Cruisers. We made many friends and many memories over the last several years and considered the club a part of our extended family. I will always be so grateful to you all. Your time, energy and giving of your hearts for Tom is the most overwhelming outreach I have ever experienced. He was my soul mate and I feel so blessed to have had him in my life. There will never be another Tom Phillips.

Lessons Discovered But Seldom Learned OR The Need for Systems Thinking Dave Hall Lessons Discovered Session 1 Outline of Session • Session I – What Are Lessons Discovered – Are We Using Lessons Discovered – Why Are We Not Using Lessons Discovered – The Story of the Vasa – Example Failures To Consider – Key Actions Required for Success Dave Hall Lessons Discovered Session 1 What Are Lessons Discovered There have been hundreds – thousands – hundreds of thousands - millions of Lessons Discovered over the past 100 years. Lessons Discovered on “Risks” of Human Errors, Program Management, Design, Technology, External Forces, etc. One major Lesson Discovered is that most people DO NOT USE SYSTEMS THINKING – SYSTEM ENGINEERING in their actions and that leads to failure Dave Hall Lessons Discovered Session 1 Are We Using Lessons Discovered – Thinking in System Terms?? BUT – Does anyone ever read these or learn from them? HOW many programs have benefited from these Lessons Discovered at such great costs? DO you know of any – or many???? AND how many programs do you know that did NOT benefit from Lessons Discovered on similar programs? AND why did they not benefit ???? Dave Hall Lessons Discovered Session 1 Why We Are Not Using Lessons Discovered – Thinking in System Terms When you identify a Lesson Discovered, you are calling into question the wisdom of earlier decisions made by yourself, others or your management. Most managers and organizations do not take kindly to “criticism”. How many people will admit to the details of a wrong decision? Even if an organization gets the development of Lessons Discovered mandated for their programs, excuses and creative explanations will emerge if a Lesson Discovered threatens some cherished program or mode of operation.
