Hello Edsel friends;

Life certainly is a series of twists and turns. No sooner does the EOC have another great convention, than we get the sad news that we have lost Roger Hill of Arvonia, Virginia, on August 27th.

Roger had been dealing with health issues and succumbed to melanoma. This year's EOC convention was only the second one he'd missed since the first meet in 1969. He sincerely wanted to be with friends but simply wasn't

well enough to attend.

Roger was our third president, serving from 1973 to 1978. He served again from 1998 to 2002. He helped our club and our hobby in so many ways, and was always there.

An enthusiast of many types of , he put most of his efforts into the Edsel and the EOC. A man of dignity and grace, Roger personified the image of The Southern Gentleman, without being cliche.

I have asked Dave Sinclair to write an article about Roger for the next Big E. Roger and Dave were Edsel friends from almost the very beginning of EOC.

Our condolences to Roger's wife Marie, and their family. Roger Hill will be missed, and will never be replaced.

George

Friday was a rather busy day. Those who brought Edsels to the meet were cleaning and shining up their cars for the judging that took place in the morning. There were also two meetings, one for the EOC staff, (the minutes from this meeting are listed on page 6) and other was a general meeting for all the members. In the evening there was a parts auction and Mike Cowles served as the auctioneer. One of our members from Dayton, Bob Swartz, offered many rare, hard to find, parts for sale in the parking lot.

On Saturday, there was an Edsel caravan to see a private collection of cars, Blad Boys Hot Rods in Dayton, which had about 90- 100 cars---rods, customs, restored, originals, and project cars.

In the evening, a banquet was hosted in a room that was filled to capacity with EOC members. After we had our dinner, Jim Arnold and Thomas Norwalk each gave a talk about their experiences during their days as employees of the Edsel Division. We had the opportunity to raise our hands and ask Mr. Arnold and Mr. Norwalk questions afterwards.

(above:) Two original Edsel Division employees were present. Jim Arnold (left) and Thomas Norwalk (right) visit with past EOC President Dean Brown (center). Jim Arnold was on the styling team and Thomas Norwalk designed the Edsel sales brochures.

Dave Sinclair, who is the last surviving founding father of the EOC, gave a talk about how he became interested in Edsels and meeting Edsel Henry Ford for the first time, helping him during the formation of the EOC, and the purchase of his first Edsel in 1967. Dave Sinclair has attended every National EOC meet since the first one that took place in Indianapolis in 1969!

Finally, the trophies were given out to the Edsel owners. The list of winners and photos are on page five. Truthfully, everyone who brought an Edsel to the meet IS a winner—as it is no small feat to be able to bring an Edsel to a national meet.

Many, many thanks to ALL of you for your enthusiastic contribution to the success of our 46th Annual National Edsel Owners Club meet in Dayton! I wish to make special mention of Dean Brown, our former EOC president, for bringing FOUR of his Edsels to the meet. He did this with the help of his son, as he would tow one Edsel on a trailer, with his son following in another Edsel. Then he and his son drove the truck/trailer back home and repeated trip with two more Edsels! I also wish to acknowledge Ray and Jean- nine Phipps, who drove all the way from Vancouver, Washington in a motor home with their Edsel hitched along on a tow bar. They bravely pulled their Edsel more than half way across the country to bring the to the meet. The Big E Page 4

EDSEL OWNERS CLUB, INC. 46th ANNUAL GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING Dayton, Ohio -- August 1, 2014

The Business meeting of the Edsel Owners Club, Inc. was called to order by President, George Foran, at 2:00 p.m. Roll Call of Offic- ers: Present were Dean Brown, Michael Cowles, George Foran, Maye Gulley, Caroll Higdem, Kathye Hidgem, Jeannine Phipps, Lois Roth, and Dave Sinclair.

President's Report; George Foran welcomed everyone to the annual convention in Dayton, Ohio. The Convention and Visitor’s Bu- reau gave us a great welcome with a bill board on the freeway and even better accommodations than the original hotel offered. Thank you to all for attending and supporting the club and the Edsel. We have gained some new members and hope to see the mem- bership increasing. It is good to see everyone. Seeing some new faces and new cars is always great. It is wonderful to have in at- tendance, former Edsel Division employees, Jim and Myron Arnold, also, Tom Norwalk, 6th person hired for Ford’s “Special Prod- ucts” before it was the Edsel Division. Tom was the Advertising Coordinator before Power Point. He just happened to see a small blurb in the Dayton newspaper and decided to look us up and join us.

Secretary's Report: Motion to accept the Secretary's minutes for 2013 as presented in the copies handed out, seconded and motion carried.

Treasurer's Report: Lois handed out copies of the Treasurer's report to everyone in attendance. The beginning balance for the year was $21,818.98 and the current balance is $29,248.76. Motion to accept the Treasurer's report as presented, seconded and motion carried.

Vice President of Chapters, Kathye Higdem reported that few chapters are active except the New England, Oregon, Keystone, Red- wood, and Windy City Chapters. Contact Kathye if any chapter wants to reactivate.

Vice President of Members: Jeannine Phipps reported that we have a total membership of almost 500. We are having an increase in membership including several younger people! Membership pins have been mailed out.

Governor Western Region, Michael Cowles, reported that the Redwood Empire Chapter has been very active, including a railroad tour and train ride. Interest has increased and more members are taking part. The Edsels in Laughlin, NV meet is a great Spring event.

Governor Eastern Region, Dean Brown, reported that the Keystone Chapter is very active and so are the chapters in Virginia, Rhode Island, and Boston areas.

Old Business: Until a few weeks ago, this convention seemed like a disaster with the original hotel closing its doors. The Doubletree Hotel has been very good to honor prices and wishes as we had needed. Convention and Visitors Bureau worked out all the details. Our ad in Hemmings will now be highlighted so that it stands out and we will continue the one in Old Cars Weekly. We still have the fund raiser license plates for sale. 100 signed up for them and we still have 40 left.

New Business: Motion to hold the convention for 2015 in Sacramento, CA, with the date to be left up to the Board of Directors. There are many things in that to see in that very historic area. Seconded and carried.

Future convention sites suggestions:

2016—Oregon 2017—60th Edsel Anniversary – Dearborn, MI, possible joint event with IEC. 2018—Indy Speedway for 50th Annual Convention, the site of our very 1st Meet (and 10th Meet) where the TV show First Tuesday filmed the entire event. Motion to purchase a DVD copy up to $200, seconded and carried.

Election of Officers was held with the following result:

President – George Foran Vice President –Regions—Reg Brown Treasurer – Lois Roth Vice President – Chapters – Kathye Higdem Secretary – Maye Gulley Vice Pres. – Membership – Jeannine Phipps

Motion to adjourn, seconded and carried. Meeting adjourned at 2:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Maye Gulley, Secretary

Volume XLVI, Issue 5 Page 7 Edsel Calendar of Events Thank you for your enthusiastic support, we now have enough pictures of your beautiful Edsels to put in the 2015 EOC color calendar!

Right now they are still being put together by Jeannine Phipps and Lois Roth. The calendars will be going into print soon and they will be mailed out to you during the month of November.

We need to know what the local chapters are doing, let us know if there is anything in your area that deserves to be noted in this calendar. Email your event info to [email protected]

Our EOC Public Relations Director, “Shamrock” Shelley Cleaver, contributed to a news segment titled “The Rough Road That Gave the Edsel a Bad Name” for “Voice of America, Learning English” This is a news program for those who speak or read English as a second language. The reporters speak at a slower pace and it is also captioned in English. Needless to say, the topic of this particular news segment is none other than Edsels. Shelley shared his perspective on why the Edsel didn't make it.
