Before we know it, it will be time for our convention. This will be the first EOC convention to be held in Utah, in fact, this will be the first Edsel meet, of any kind, to be held in Utah. I hope that as many of you as possible can attend. An Edsel with a unique history may be making an appearance at the meet. It is the ‘58 Bermuda that was used in "The Donna Reed Show” when it was new. Also, it appears that the Pacer convertible, which looks just like the one driven by Don Knotts in "Return to Mayberry," has recently changed hands and is now owned by an EOC member. It would be interesting if the Citation that Don Knotts drove in "The Ghost And Mr. Chicken" would turn up someday. As always, give your Edsels a good going over before taking to the roads. Top off the fluid levels, and carry some spare parts with you. Left: Donna Reed with “her” Bermuda in an early episode of her TV show. Right: The Bermuda as it appears today. It is an original unrestored car. It is believed to be the same car that was on Donna Reed’s TV show. From the President’s Desk! Regards, George Volume XLIX, Issue 3 Page 3 Plans are underway to make the 48th annual EOC meet in Ogden an exciting one! Ted Downer will be bringing an original Bermuda wagon that is believed to be the actual car driven by Donna Reed on her show when the Edsel was new. The owner of the Millstream Antique Auto Museum in Willard, Utah, is looking forward to our tour to his place, which contains an original, unrestored spring green 1958 Pacer Press Car that was driven by a press agent to Colorado and Utah. It has remained in Utah since it was new and has been part of the museum since 1975. This Pacer is loaded with all the power options that were offered in 1958. Mike Cowles, who was the host of last year’s national meet in Sacramento, has designed the T-shirt for the Ogden meet this year. There is much to see in historic Ogden as the host hotel is located in a historic district. Nearby are several museums in the train depot. TRANSPORTATION SUGGESTION FOR THOSE WHO WILL BE ARRIVING VIA THE SALT LAKE AIRPORT For those of you who are flying to Utah and arriving at the Salt Lake Airport, there is an easy and inexpensive way to get to Ogden from Salt Lake City. There is a light rail that runs from the airport to downtown called “TRAX.” Board the TRAX and then get off at the fifth stop which would be the “North Temple Bridge” stop. Once you get off the light rail train on the bridge, you will see an escalator that will take you down to a lower platform where you will catch a diesel commuter train called “Frontrunner.” Take the northbound train and ride it for about 50 minutes and at the sixth stop, it will be at the Ogden station. The host hotel is about a 3/4th of a mile directly east of the train station. The website for this transportation system is rideuta.com; once you get on that site, click on “TRAX Green Line” and then “Frontrunner” to see the maps and schedules. Cover Story by David Fleischer The photo on the cover of this newsletter is from a negative I recently purchased on eBay for less than a dollar. The description on the listing said something about “Edsel,” however, with it being a negative, I could hardly make out what it was. It looked like it might be of an old city bus with an Edsel advertisement on it. When the negative arrived in the mail, I immediately took it to a place to have it developed into a picture. When I came back to pick up the picture, I could hardly believe my eyes and realized that this negative was a very unique discovery. It was also surprising that the picture was in color, as most pictures taken in the 1950s were black and white. The picture shows the back end of a city bus, wearing a 1959 Delaware commercial license plate. There was also a life-sized, hand-painted illustration of the rear of a 1959 Edsel Corsair convertible on the back of the bus. What makes this photo unusual is that the bus is wearing the tail lights from the actual car that is advertised on it. The bus was fitted with REAL 1959 Edsel tail light clusters. It appears that the tail lights from the bus were removed, and the holes were capped off, and the Edsel lights were installed with the wires from the bus connected to them, so that the brake lights and turn signals worked through the Edsel lights. It probably created an interesting 3-D effect. The name of the dealer advertised on the bus is LeBro M-E-L dealership, located in Wilmington, Delaware. LeBro was a Mercury – Lincoln dealership that took on the Edsel in the 1959 model year after the local Edsel dealer gave up its franchise. Lessons Discovered But Seldom Learned OR The Need for Systems Thinking Dave Hall Lessons Discovered Session 1 Outline of Session • Session I – What Are Lessons Discovered – Are We Using Lessons Discovered – Why Are We Not Using Lessons Discovered – The Story of the Vasa – Example Failures To Consider – Key Actions Required for Success Dave Hall Lessons Discovered Session 1 What Are Lessons Discovered There have been hundreds – thousands – hundreds of thousands - millions of Lessons Discovered over the past 100 years. Lessons Discovered on “Risks” of Human Errors, Program Management, Design, Technology, External Forces, etc. One major Lesson Discovered is that most people DO NOT USE SYSTEMS THINKING – SYSTEM ENGINEERING in their actions and that leads to failure Dave Hall Lessons Discovered Session 1 Are We Using Lessons Discovered – Thinking in System Terms?? BUT – Does anyone ever read these or learn from them? HOW many programs have benefited from these Lessons Discovered at such great costs? DO you know of any – or many???? AND how many programs do you know that did NOT benefit from Lessons Discovered on similar programs? AND why did they not benefit ???? Dave Hall Lessons Discovered Session 1 Why We Are Not Using Lessons Discovered – Thinking in System Terms When you identify a Lesson Discovered, you are calling into question the wisdom of earlier decisions made by yourself, others or your management. Most managers and organizations do not take kindly to “criticism”. How many people will admit to the details of a wrong decision? Even if an organization gets the development of Lessons Discovered mandated for their programs, excuses and creative explanations will emerge if a Lesson Discovered threatens some cherished program or mode of operation.

Volume XLIX, Issue 2 Edsel Owners Club Inc. March 2016 T HE B IG E It’s Ogden, Utah - the site of the INSIDE THIS 2016 National EOC Convention! ISSUE: We are delighted to announce that Ogden, Utah, has been selected to be the host city for our Announcement of 1 2016 National Edsel Meet, which will take place from August 3rd through the 7th. We originally the 2016 EOC planned to have the meet in Salt Lake City, but in trying to secure a host hotel in Salt Lake City, we found that the demand for convention hotels require planning two or three years in advance, National Meet site and that the room rates there were prohibitively high. President’s 2 Ogden is located 45 minutes directly north of Salt Lake City on I-15. The convention will take place at a hotel that is unlike any other hotel that typically hosted our meets. The Ben Lomond Letter is a grand hotel, built in the 1920s and has the historical elegance from the “Great Gatsby” era.
