Huda Department of Botany, University of Chittagong, Chittagong 4331, Bangladesh Abstract The study aimed at determining the status of occurrence of the orchid treasure of Bangladesh for providing data for Planning National Conservation Strategy and Development of Conservation Management. 54 orchid species are assessed to be presumably lost from the flora of Bangladesh due to environmental degradation and ecosystem depletion. The assessment of their status of occurrence was made based on long term field investigation, collection and identification of orchid taxa; examination and identification of herbarium specimens preserved at CAL, E, K, DACB, DUSH, BFRIH,BCSIRH, HCU; and survey of relevant upto date floristic literature. These species had been recorded from the present Bangladesh territory for more than 50 to 100 years ago, since then no further report of occurrence or collection from elsewhere in Bangladesh is available and could not be located to their recorded localities through field investigations. Of these, 29 species were epiphytic in nature and 25 terrestrial. More than 41% of these taxa are economically very important for their potential medicinal and ornamental values. Enumeration of these orchid taxa is provided with updated nomenclature, bangla name(s) and short annotation with data on habitats, phenology, potential values, recorded locality, global distribution conservation status and list of specimens available in different herbaria. It provides information on 185 epiphytes and their traditional medicinal uses, regions where Indigenous people use the plants, parts of the plants used as medicines and their preparation, and their reported phytochemical properties and pharmacological properties aligned with their traditional uses. These epiphytic medicinal plants are able to produce a range of secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, and a total of 842 phytochemicals have been identified to date. As many as 71 epiphytic medicinal plants were studied for their biological activities, showing promising pharmacological activities, including as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer agents. There are several species that were not investigated for their activities and are worthy of exploration. -

But due to its rarity, it took more than 100 years for the species to be rediscovered in two other localities. This paper describes the first record of V. montana in Negeri Sembilan with preliminary notes on its floral development and some highlights on the ecological influences. We also proposed a conservation status for the species. The data obtained will serve as an important botanical profile of the species, and it will add to our knowledge gaps on the distribution of this distinctive orchid in Malaysia. Two private libraries, Benjamin Singer’s (which he donated to the American Orchid Society) and Joseph Arditti’s (its future is yet to be decided, it may be donated to an academic or scientific institutions or sold), served as primary sources for this list. However other sources were also used. The use of multiple sources increased the number of books which are listed but may have introduced errors or imperfections for following reasons. One and the same book may have been listed under different names erroneously. Names of authors may have been misspelled. When books have more than one author, the order of authors may have been presented differently in different lists and/or one or more names may have been omitted, added or misspelled. A book may have been published under different names in more than one country. Books are sometimes published by one publisher in one country and another in a different one. Spelling errors in different lists Translations Different editions Lack of information Conventions used in spelling names like “de” and “van.” Erroneous assumptions regarding Chinese surnames. The second conference followed 2 years later in 1969, together with the Floralies in Vincennes, Paris. 19 years later, in 1988 the EOCCE was again in Paris, the conference program was in a building at the Trocadero, the orchid exhibition was in a tent on the Champs de Mars, both localities with the perfect view to the most famous landmark of Paris, the Eiffel-tower. I still remember the storm during one afternoon, strong enough to force the responsible of the organization committee to shut down the exhibition for some hours. And now in 2018 we saw the 3rd EOCCE again in Paris, not in the heart of the town, but not too far away. -

These analyses divide the family into ®ve primary monophyletic clades: apostasioid, cypripedioid, vanilloid, orchidoid, and epidendroid orchids, arranged in that order. These clades, with the exception of the vanilloids, essentially correspond to currently recognized subfamilies. A distinct subfamily, based upon tribe Vanilleae, is supported for Vanilla and its allies. The general tree topology is, for the most part, congruent with previously published hypotheses of intrafamilial relationships; however, there is no evidence supporting the previously recognized subfamilies Spiranthoideae, Neottioideae, or Vandoideae. Subfamily Spiranthoideae is embedded within a single clade containing mem- bers of Orchidoideae and sister to tribe Diurideae. -

The article continues serial publication of illustrated critical taxonomical survey of orchids in the flora of Vietnam. This part of the monograph includes taxonomical treatment of so-called primitive tribes (Neottieae, Vanilleae, Gastrodieae, Nervilieae) of the largest subfamily Epidendroideae (17 genera and 41 species in Vietnam); besides, some corrections and additions to first and second parts of the monograph are included. Identification keys, valid name, necessary synonyms, type material citation, short description, data on ecology and distribution, as well as a list of studied voucher specimens for each species are provided. Mentioned species are illustrated with original line drawings and color photographs. Two new nomenclature combinations are proposed, namely Cyrtosia faberi (Rolfe) Aver., and C. falconeri (Hook. f.) Aver. A new genus Miguelia Aver. with 2 species – M. somai (Hayata) Aver. and M. annamica (Gagnep.) Aver. is established. Description of a new species – Peristylus tenuicallus Ormerod. discovered by P. Ormerod on the base of his studies of AMES Herbarium is also presented. CAMERON The Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Program for Molecular Systematics Studies, The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, New York 10458-5126, USA ([email protected]) ABSTRACT Parsimony analyses of DNA sequences from the plastid genes atpB and rbcL were completed for 173 species of Orchidaceae (representing 150 different genera) and nine genera from outgroup families in Asparagales. The atpB tree topology is similar to the rbcL tree, although the atpB data contain less homoplasy and provide greater jackknife support than rbcL alone. In combination, the two-gene tree recovers five monophyletic clades corresponding to subfamilies within Orchidaceae, and fully resolves them with moderate to high jackknife support as follows: Epidendroideae are sister to Orchidoideae, followed by Cypripedioideae, then Vanilloideae, and with Apostasioideae sister to the entire family.
