Which all sounds rather prosaic, not to say functional. One of the pleasures of last year’s gardening for me was being able to see some of my ‘front liners’ with fresh eyes, not just as the useful plants they undoubtedly are, but also as the star performers they can be in their own right. It all started with the flowering of Jovellana violacea (fig. 2). Having bought it as a very small plant on the 2002 Autumn Weekend, I planted it where I could keep an eye on it. Each spring, in my ignorance, I cut it back to tidy it up, assuming that it would produce flowers later in the summer: exactly the wrong thing to do. CHIOV., TWO NEW ALIEN GRASSES FOR MADEIRA ISLAND (PORTUGAL) Laura Cabral*, João Pedro Ferreira*, André Brazão* Pedro Nascimento* & Miguel Menezes de Sequeira** Abstract The number of introduced, and possible introduced, taxa in the Madeira and Selvagens islands currently accounts for nearly 36% of the total flora of these archipelagos, including 53 Poaceae taxa (out of 141 Poaceae taxa), therefore constituting the family with the higher proportion of introduced taxa (38.4%). The genus Ehrharta Thunb. comprises about 35 species, with one species, E. longiflora Sm., recorded as introduced in Gran Canaria. The genus Pennisetum Rich. includes ca. 80 species of which a total of nine species are present in Macaronesia, with three: P. clandestinum Hochst. & Chiov., P. purpureum Schum. and P. villosum R. Br. ex Fresen, occurring in the Madeira archipelago. Ehrharta longiflora Sm. and Pennisetum setaceum (Forssk.) Chiov., are here recorded for the first time for the Ma- deira island, found in disturbed areas at low and medium altitudes. The finding of several mature and flowering/fructifying individuals of both species suggests a fully naturalized status. Naturalization, invasiveness and ecological impacts are discussed.     Garden diary number seven Wildlife and wildflowers start off this garden diary. It shows a good balance between plantsmanship and the environment when nature comes in of its own accord. When walking on a nature reserve on a warm calm day the insect and bird activity add an extra dimension which a photograph simply cannot capture. The first photo is a small wildflower patch in my own garden which is only 3 feet square but has a number of native species that attract a lot of pollinators. Just digging out the topsoil and replacing with subsoil and grit provided an ideal planting medium. Second photo is Epipactis palustris the marsh helleborine which snakes its way around this bed in a delightful fashion. Next photos were sent in by Norma Pagdin and Joan Bradbury who live in County Durham. The first photo shows self-sown orchids growing on the lawn. The land is on a magnesian limestone belt which runs from Nottingham up to this area. It surfaces in different areas creating calcareous habitats. Brockadale, Burton Leonard kiln works and Townclose Hills are reserves on this belt. The second photo is Viola odorata the sweet white violet which grows under hedgerows preferring the shade. Next page was sent in by Georgina Instone and is a well written article about their encounter with a red-legged partridge in their own garden. Wildlife in our garden – Georgina Instone. We have had something very interesting in the garden but it didn't end well. At the beginning of April, we discovered a Red-legged Partridge had chosen our garden to have its nest.

This is clearly of concern for South Africa. However, alien grass impacts in South Africa are largely unknown. This makes prioritising them for management difficult. In this thesis, I investigated the negative environmental and socio-economic impacts of 58 alien grasses occurring in South Africa from 352 published literature sources, the mechanisms through which they cause impacts, and the magnitudes of those impacts across different habitats and regions. Through this assessment, I ranked alien grasses based on their maximum recorded impact. Cortaderia sellonoana had the highest overall impact score, followed by Arundo donax, Avena fatua, Elymus repens, and Festuca arundinacea.

The Eryngium genus, of the Apiaceae family, includes plants characterized by morphological attributes that give them, in many situations, the status of decorative plants. Relatively modest ecological requirements and fairly good resistance to less favourable crop conditions (sunstroke, water deficit, poor soils and salinity etc.) contribute to the interest in these plants. This paper aims to highlight the possibilities of using for five Eryngium taxa (E. alpinum 'Superbum', E. planum 'Blue Sea Holly', E. planum 'Blue Hobbit', E. leavenworthii) with ornamental qualities, cultivated in the conditions of Iaşi, with a view to their promotion and superior exploitation in floral art and landscaping. Key words: Eryngium, morphology, ecology, ornamental value Rezumat. Genul Eryngium, din familia Apiaceae, cuprinde plante caracterizate prin însuşiri morfologice care le conferă, în multe situaţii, şi statutul de plante decorative. Cerinţele ecologice relativ modeste şi rezistenţa destul de bună la condiţii de cultură mai puţin favorabile altor specii (insolaţie, deficit de apă, soluri sărace şi cu salinitate crescută etc.) contribuie la creşterea interesului pentru aceste plante. Lucrarea de faţă îşi propune să evidenţieze posibilităţile de utilizare a cinci taxoni de Eryngium (E. alpinum ‘Superbum’, E. planum ‘Blue Sea Holly’, E. planum 'Blue Hobbit', E. leavenworthii) cu calităţi ornamentale, cultivaţi în condiţiile de la Iaşi, în vederea promovării şi valorificării superioare a acestora în arta florală şi în amenajări peisagistice.
