2 • Barangay Walang Iwanan • #BWI2019 FOREWORD

Communities have always been at the core of the Filipino society. Be- cause the is at the intersection of numerous issues, be it regarding its exposure to the consequences of climate change, or regar- ding the challenges of fighting poverty in a fast-growing economy while leaving no one behind, communities are more crucial than ever.

Communities are one of the driving forces for change within a society, and incredible spaces for experimentation and innovation. As such, they are central in addressing the issues of sustainability, inclusion and equa- lity. However, to actually stand a chance in overcoming the scourges of poverty, exclusion, and climate change, all actors in society must play their part, and above all join forces as the scale of challenges calls for collective and co-constructed actions.

For the first time, French think-tank Convergences and Filipino NGO Gawad Kalinga partner to present the first-ever “Barangay Walang Iwanan” event. By engaging the youth, key decision makers, and stakeholders from all sectors, this gathering aims at being the starting point of an alliance of changemakers committed to a 3Zero Philippines: Zero Exclusion, Zero Carbon, Zero Poverty.

We believe that together, we have the potential to transform our socie- ties and communities in a sustainable, inclusive, and ambitious way. The Barangay Walang Iwanan event calls upon all members of society – every company, every civil society organization, every local or national government, every citizen. We all have a role to play to invent the world of tomorrow, so let’s create the 3Zero world we want to live in!
