Novartis Letter Novartis International AG Communications Switzerland CH-4002 Basel Schweiz http://www.novartis.com MEDIA RELEASE • COMMUNIQUE AUX MEDIAS • MEDIENMITTEILUNG Update zum Sanierungsprojekt ARA STEIH in Huningue • Unter der Leitung von Novartis saniert die ARA STEIH eine Altlast, die durch eine Drittpartei verursacht wurde. • Gesamthaft wurden bis heute 375'000m3 kontaminiertes Erdreich saniert, was rund 675'000 Tonnen entspricht. • Der Abschluss der Sanierungsarbeiten wird voraussichtlich im 2. Quartal 2021 erwartet. Basel, 3. Mai 2018 – Das Sanierungsprojekt "ARA STEIH" schreitet voran und gilt als Vorzeigeprojekt für Firmen und Behörden im In- und Ausland. Bis heute wurden bereits rund 375'000 m3 kontaminiertes Erdreich saniert, was rund 675'000 Tonnen Aushubmaterial entspricht. Das kontaminierte Erdreich wird je nach Schwere der Schadstoffbelastung per Schiff oder in Containern und Fässern auf dem Landweg abtransportiert und entsprechend der Kategorisierung weiter behandelt. Trotz dieser enormen Aushubmengen werden die Sanierungsarbeiten noch längere Zeit andauern. Bei rund 37 % der Sanierungsfläche ist ein tieferer Aushub erforderlich als ursprünglich geplant. Im weiteren gestaltet sich der Abtransport per Schiff als einschränkender Faktor, da der Transport nur bei entsprechendem Rheinwasserpegel möglich ist. Hoch- resp. Niedrigwasser haben in der Vergangenheit zu Verzögerungen geführt. Neu kommen nun Zwillingskähne mit einer Gesamtlänge von 180 Metern zum Einsatz. Damit konnte die Transportkapazität auf dem Rhein um rund 38% erhöht werden. Bedingt durch diese Faktoren werden die Sanierungsarbeiten voraussichtlich erst im 2. Quartal des Jahres 2021 abgeschlossen werden können. In Absprache mit den französischen Behörden bleibt der Radweg während der Sanierungsarbeiten weiterhin geschlossen und ist nur an den Wochendenden von Samstag- bis Montagmorgen geöffnet. Auf dem restlichen Gelände werden nach Abschluss der Sanierungsarbeiten Grünanlagen und Parkplätze entstehen. Die Entwicklung des Geländes ist abhängig von den Projekten aus der Vision Dreiland. Die Sanierung hat zum Ziel, die Restkonzentrationen von Lindan-Nebenprodukten und weiterer Altlasten zu reduzieren und damit sämtliche Folgenutzungen des Gebiets zu ermöglichen. Sie wird sich positiv auf die Boden- und Grundwasserqualität und darüber hinaus auf die Verbesserung der Lebensbedingungen auswirken. Es kann jedoch nicht ausgeschlossen werden, dass es im Verlaufe der Sanierung erneut zu vereinzelten Geruchsemissionen kommen kann. Gemeinsam mit den Behörden führen wir täglich Luftmessungen durch, überwachen die Staubverfrachtung und machen Wassermessungen. Die ARA STEIH steht dafür ein, dass die Sanierung sicher und ohne Gefährdung für die Bevölkerung und Umwelt zu Ende geführt werden kann und steht in regelmässigem Kontakt mit den Behörden, der Nachbarschaft und den Medien. Seite 2 von 3 Über die die ARA STEIH Zwischen 1947 und 1972 hat die ehemalige Firma Produits Chimiques Ugine Kuhlmann (PCUK) auf dem Areal der ARA STEIH eine Produktionsstätte für Pestizide betrieben und dabei das Gelände mit Lindan belastet. 1971 fusionierte die Compagnie Péchiney SA mit Ugine Kuhlmann zur Péchiney Chemicals Ugine Kuhlmann (PCUK), die sich zum ersten privaten Industriekonzern Frankreichs auf dem Gebiet der Elektrochemie, der Elektrometallurgie und teilweise der organischen Chemie entwickelte. 1982 wurde die Gruppe Péchiney verstaatlicht. Nach Stilllegung des Produktions-betriebs hat die damalige Sandoz das bereits kontaminierte Gelände erworben und 1975 in die STEIH eingebracht, die darauf eine Industriekläranlage errichtet hat. Die chemisch-pharmazeutische Industrie - bestehend aus Clariant, Novartis und BASF, bzw. ihren Vorgängerfirmen - hat über 30 Jahre ihre Abwässer in die STEIH eingeleitet. STEIH hat bis 2012 die Industriekläranlage betrieben. Die Industriewässer, die vormals bei STEIH gereinigt wurden, werden heute in der Industriekläranlage ProRheno (ARA Chemie) in Basel wiederaufbereitet. Durch eine umweltschonende Durchführung und eine lückenlose Überwachung der Sanierungsarbeiten werden Lindan-Rückstände im Boden sorgfältig entfernt und nach dem neusten Stand der Technologie entsorgt. Gemeinsam mit den Behörden werden die Emissionen strikt überwacht. Die ARA STEIH - unter der Federführung von Novartis - steht dafür ein, dass die Sanierung sicher und ohne Gefährdung für die Bevölkerung und Umwelt zu Ende geführt wird.
