Personally it has been a very strange year, with each of the earlier months bringing unexpected and generally bad news, for either myself or Brenda. Thankfully the latter part of the year has shown dramatic improvement, and we now await the events that 1998 will unveil. Torch Bearer seems to have become very dependant on the efforts of a small band of contributors, and whilst this has always been true to some extent, it is now even more apparent. Please remember that all contributors offer their time and efforts freely, and obviously only contribute articles or information on subjects that hold a special interest to them. It is totally unfair to expect a fellow collector to research and produce articles on subjects that are of no specific interest to them. We are fortunate in having contributing members with diverse collecting fields. However, amongst the membership, we have a vast pool of knowledge and available information relating to the first 103 years of the Modern Olympic Movement, much of which remains untapped. Members Forum has been successful in answering some questions, and providing background information in response to members queries. Why not make use of this facility? It provides copy, and in many cases the query raised is of interest to a wide sector of the readers. Your Committee have recently debated two points that have been raised by a number of members, and reached the following conclusions: Publication of a membership list. It was decided that the Society will not issue a membership list, or give any details of an individual member without their express permission. It was felt that the publishing of members collecting interests could present a risk of theft, and that there were legal implications relating to the storage of information. This does not exclude the Society 'introducing' members to each other, either in a geographical area, or where a shared interest exists - if all parties are in agreement. Many members have made their details available through the Small Ads, by choice, and this route is available to all. Extended / multiple year membership. It was decided that any member wishing to pay for membership in advance may do so, without any limitation to the number of years that may be paid. Payments received in advance will secure membership for the appropriate period to which the payment relates at the time of payment, thus avoiding any. increase in subscription rates. Advance payments will be non-refundable. 146 NEWS FROM MEMBERS Kitzbuhel 2006 U berto Stefan n uti sent the illustrated postcard during a recent trip to Austria It promotes the bid of Kitzbuhel to secure the backing of the Austrian Olympic Committee as an official candidate to host the Olympic Winter Games 2006. Following the Olympic Games, the U.S. Baseball team played two exhibition games in England; one against the White City Club team; the second against the West Ham Baseball Club team. Mark understands that a British Empire / U.S.A. athletics meeting took place at White City immediately after the Olympic Games, and would like to know if the Baseball Game was linked with this meeting. Any factual information, or knowledge of postmarks / philatelic souvenirs would be gratefully received. Information to the Editor please.
