What's the Download® Music Survival Guide
WHAT’S THE DOWNLOAD® MUSIC SURVIVAL GUIDE Written by: The WTD Interactive Advisory Board Inspired by: Thousands of perspectives from two years of work Dedicated to: Anyone who loves music and wants it to survive *A special thank you to Honorary Board Members Chris Brown, Sway Calloway, Kelly Clarkson, Common, Earth Wind & Fire, Eric Garland, Shirley Halperin, JD Natasha, Mark McGrath, and Kanye West for sharing your time and your minds. Published Oct. 19, 2006 What’s The Download® Interactive Advisory Board: WHO WE ARE Based on research demonstrating the need for a serious examination of the issues facing the music industry in the wake of the rise of illegal downloading, in 2005 The Recording Academy® formed the What’s The Download Interactive Advisory Board (WTDIAB) as part of What’s The Download, a public education campaign created in 2004 that recognizes the lack of dialogue between the music industry and music fans. We are comprised of 12 young adults who were selected from hundreds of applicants by The Recording Academy through a process which consisted of an essay, video application and telephone interview. We come from all over the country, have diverse tastes in music and are joined by Honorary Board Members that include high-profile music creators and industry veterans. Since the launch of our Board at the 47th Annual GRAMMY® Awards, we have been dedicated to discussing issues and finding solutions to the current challenges in the music industry surrounding the digital delivery of music. We have spent the last two years researching these issues and gathering thousands of opinions on issues such as piracy, access to digital music, and file-sharing. -
My Friend P2p
MY FRIEND P2P Music and Internet for the Modern Entrepreneur Lucas Pedersen Bachelor’s Thesis December 2010 Degree Program in Media Digital Sound and Commercial Music Tampereen ammattikorkeakoulu Tampere University of Applied Sciences 2 ABSTRACT Tampere University of Applied Sciences Degree Program in Media Digital Sound and Commercial Music PEDERSEN, LUCAS: My Friend p2p – Music and Internet for the Modern Entrepreneur Bachelor’s thesis 81 pages December 2010 _______________________________________________________________ The music industry is undergoing an extensive transformation due to the digital revolution. New technologies such as the PC, the internet, and the iPod are empowering the consumer and the musician while disrupting the recording industry models. The aim of my thesis was to acknowledge how spectacular these new technologies are, and what kind of business structure shifts we can expect to see in the near future. I start by presenting the underlying causes for the changes and go on to studying the main effects they have developed into. I then analyze the results of these changes from the perspective of a particular entrepreneur and offer a business idea in tune with the adjustments in supply and demand. Overwhelmed with accessibility caused by democratized tools of production and distribution, music consumers are reevaluating recorded music in relation to other music products. The recording industry is shrinking but the overall music industry is growing. The results strongly suggest that value does not disappear, it simply relocates. It is important that both musicians and industry professionals understand what their customers value and how to provide them with precisely that. _______________________________________________________________ Key Words: Music business, digital revolution, internet, piracy, marketing. -

New Entry of Record Labels in the Music Industry
Start Me Up: New Entry of Record Labels in the Music Industry Master Thesis MSc Business Administration Management and Entrepreneurship in the Creative Industries Faculty of Economics and Business, Amsterdam Business School Myra Alice Wilhelmina Ruers - 11903929 Supervisor: Dr. M. Piazzai 21st of June 2018 Statement of Originality This document is written by Student Myra Ruers, who declares to take full responsibility for the contents of this document. I declare that the text and the work presented in this document is original and that no sources other than those mentioned in the text and its references have been used in creating it. The Faculty of Economics and Business is responsible solely for the supervision of completion of the work, not for the contents. 2 Abstract The music industry is extremely vibrant, diverse, and inherently uncertain. Record labels are the main intermediaries in this industry, facilitating the connection between the creative input from musicians and the demand from the consumers. Due to many technological advancements, the barriers to entry have decreased significantly, hence making it easier to enter this industry as a new record label. Additionally, strategic integration options allow existing firms to start new ventures by acquiring or initiating subsidiaries. This research focuses on the multiple modes through which new entry can be commenced. These entry modes all have their own characteristics and consequences for the configurations of the industry. The likelihood of entry, the subsequent performance of new record labels, and the effects on the diversity of the output are the main topics that are explored. In this study, databases storing longitudinal information on musical releases are used to compile a dataset with the necessary information on new record labels. -
ROGER Mcguinn
ROGER McGUINN Biography Jim McGuinn, later known as Roger, was already a veteran of the New York and Los Angeles music scene when he co-founded the group that would become the Byrds with Gene Clark and David Crosby in 1964. Prior to forming the Byrds, Roger toured and performed folk music with the Limeliters, Chad Mitchell Trio and Bobby Darin as a guitarist and banjo player. He was also the musical director and guitarist on Judy Collins #3. McGuinn, a Chicago native, studied at the Old Town School of Folk Music and was active on Chicago's folk scene, where he was strongly influenced as a teenager by Bob Gibson. Within a few weeks of finishing high school, McGuinn was working with the Limeliters in California, playing guitar and banjo on their album "Tonight: In Person." McGuinn is also on the Chad Mitchell Trio's albums: "Mighty Day on Campus" and The Chad Mitchell Trio at the Bitter End After touring for awhile with singer Bobby Darin, McGuinn moved to New York at Darin's request to work for his publishing company, TM Music, in the fabled Brill Building as a songwriter. He and Frank Gari co wrote the song "Beach Ball" and performed it with Darin, as the City Surfers, on a very rare single, July 1963. After hearing the Beatles for the first time at the Brill Building, Roger began playing folk songs to a rock beat in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village. His experiments in merging folk and rock didn't please the folk purist, so he moved to Los Angeles to work at the Troubadour. -

PROLOGUE Sidelines of chairs neatly divide the center field and a large stage stands erect. At its center, there is a stately podium flanked by disciplined men wearing the militaristic suits of the Fruit of Islam, a visible security squad. This is Ford Field, usually known for housing the Detroit Lions football team, but on this occasion it plays host to a different gathering and sentiment. The seats are mostly full, both on the floor and in the stands, but if you look closely, you’ll find that this audience isn’t the standard sporting fare: the men are in smart suits, the women dress equally so, in long white dresses, gloves, and headscarves. -
