SWEET BRIAR COLLEGE LIBRARY GAZETTE Vol. XLVIII 2016 John G. Jaffe and the Beginning of the Computer Age for Libraries Marjorie M. Freeman database. John had the foresight to realize n the early 1980s a new service became that it would take grant money to finance available to libraries nationwide: these purchases since money was tight, as OCLC (the Online Computer Library usual, and such an outlay by any of the area Center), and Sweet Briar College was libraries was unlikely. The most logical idea Iquick to join in the venture. It provided was to band together Sweet Briar, Lynchburg cataloging information about books and other and Randolph-Macon Woman’s Colleges into materials and printed out catalog cards for a consortium and to seek funding for that the library’s massive card catalogs (loved and combined effort. The first grant application despised by many library users). Not only failed and one of the reasons was that we did OCLC provide catalog cards but it kept were not the first to take that direction. a computer based record of items cataloged We did not give up and filed a grant for a by its member libraries. And this made it federally funded program that would provide possible for libraries to see what other libraries a CD Rom version of the catalogs of the owned and expanded borrowing of materials three colleges. CDI Lycée Mounier – Novembre 2017 Bibliographie Mangas (480 ex) AKAMATSU, Ken.

Manga and Libraries in Japan by Yasuyo INOUYE (Dokkyo University) Contents: 1. Introduction 2. Manga publishing in Japan 3. Dispute over Manga 4. Manga at libraries 5. Manga at school libraries 6. Conclusion 1. Introduction There has been a long history of Manga (Comics, or graphic novels) publishing in Japan since the late 19th century. Some scholars have pointed out that ‘Chouju Giga’ drawn by Toba-Sojo around 11 century is one of the oldest comic illustrations. Now, people outside of Japan, especially the younger generation are fascinated by translated Japanese Manga and several related things. This article reports about the Manga publishing situation, historical disputes over Manga, and how Manga has been treated at libraries in Japan. 2. Manga publishing in Japan The expression Manga comes from Hokusai- manga. Hokusai KATSUSHIKA (1760-1849) drew humorous and critical cartoons, and moved on later to stories based on 4-frame-cartoons - these were called Manga. They are different to bande dessinée. Manga which have been translated into English are mainly long story Manga, so in US they are -pg. 1- known as Manga ‘graphic novels’, but Manga includes not only fiction but also nonfiction like history, biographies and other reference materials. 4-frame-cartoons developed into Kamishibai which is a series of story cartoons on more than ten pieces of cardboard. Later those stories started to be printed in newspapers and magazines for children and young people. Japanese Manga is still printed in magazines today, and also published in book format. Each magazine has a target readership, such as boys, girls, young men, young women, adults, and others.

  • La Mujer En La Familia Japonesa La Vertiente Humor~Stica De La Rutina
LA MUJER EN LA FAMILIA JAPONESA LA VERTIENTE HUMOR~STICADE LA RUTINA FAMILIAR , A TRAVÉS DEL MANGA Aki ko Yamada Grupo Kaika 1.

A travelogue sketchbook from Takehiko InoueBy Parka[[VIDEOID:mo1BDGT8OFYLAMJ]]I've had the Japanese edition of this book pepita ???? meets ???? that was published in 2011. I like the book but could not understand what was written. It's great that Viz Media released this English edition. There's some difference between the two edition. The English edition left out the behind-the-scenes DVD and some calendar postcards.Pepita is a sort of a travelogue sketchbook from Takehiko Inoue, the artist for the popular comic series Slam Dunk and Vagabond. Pepita is a very different piece of work from Inoue who is known for manga art.In 2011, he traveled to Barcelona in Spain to look for inspiration and meaning in Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi's architecture. Collected within are the sketches, photographs and notes that he made on the trip. It's written very candidly and you can read about the thoughts he had when looking and drawing the different places. He visited the mountains at Montserrat, places were Gaudi lived, and the many sites where the famous buildings are, such as Sagrada Familia, Casa MIla, Park Guell and many more.

  • Manga World: Globalization Theory Revisited Peter J. Rimmer
(2004) Manga World: Globalization Theory Revisited Peter J. Rimmer I Introduction Benjamin R. Barber's study1) entitled Jihad vs. McWorld offers a popular interpretation of the global political economy that resonates with contemporary world events. In this dialectic Japan is set firmly in McWorld and subject to the full force of universalizing and homogenizing processes emanating from Western-centered globalization rooted in Euro-America. There have been pockets of localized resistance to the globalization juggernaut in Japan that perhaps hint at the tribal overtones of jihad. However, the Japanese have been unable to resist the siren call of mass consumption epitomized by McDonald's/Coca-Cola, and mass infotainment typified by Hollywood movies and 'Western' music. Barber's interpretation of the global political economy glissades over the 'recentering', or is it 'decentering', of globalization as Japan is fast becoming a major node of global cultural production in its own right (Figure1). A host of Japanese cultural products have been created for domestic consumption ranging from comics [manga] and their offshoot animation [anime], through film and music, to television (localization). By crossing borders and becoming transnational phenomena these Japanese cultural consumer products are now in the process of being popularized in a way that underlines globalization is not merely a Western preserve but incorporates Japan (lo-globalization). As Japan has become part of this decentered globalization, it is, in turn, exporting cultural products to Asia (glocalization). This process echoes Japan's past economic embrace of Asia and the pioneering efforts of its major companies such as Honda and Toyota adapting their 2) cars and Sony its electronic goods to suit local markets.
