    Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi- Cultural Tonality By Carlo Estolano Commentaries for the PhD folio of compositions University of York Music December 2017 2 3 Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi-Cultural Tonality Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of a PhD degree in Music at The University of York, December 2018 by Carlo Estolano. Abstract This folio is conceived to propose and demonstrate music realisation of original compositions throughout the employment of elements of mainly two distinct sources: a selection from the wide palette of Brazilian folk styles that have improvisation as a strong element, which is internationally acknowledged as Brazilian Jazz; and its intersections with a certain style of European Jazz represented by artists notable by their keenness to combine elements from distinct musical genres with their Classical background, such as Ralph Towner, Jan Garbarek, John Abercrombie, Eberhard Weber, Kenny Wheeler, Terje Rypdal, Keith Jarrett to name a few. Both Brazilian and European approaches to Jazz seem to share processes of appropriation of foreign musical languages, as well as utilising characteristic features of their own traditions. Another common ground is their relation with some elements and procedures of classical music. The methodology to accomplish an organized collection of musical material was to divide them in five major influences, part of them by composers and part by genres notable by having evolved through absorbing elements from distinct cultural sources. In five projects, fifteen original compositions are provided along with their recorded and/or filmed performances and commentaries about the compositional aspects, concerningthe style or composer focused on.

  • Knut Rössler Johannes Vogt
    KNUT RÖSSLER Knut Rössler was born in 1945. For him the jazz of the late ’and early ’(jazz as he first got to know it) was the music of the young generation. The freedom of improvisation fascinated him from the outset. After playing a number of different instruments, and venturing into pop and rock in the late ’and early ‘– more a lifestyle choice than a musical decision, Rössler only began to seriously devote himself to the saxophone and flute and the fundamentals of music, at age thirty. In the following years, he became involved in all forms of music making, from duo, trio, quartet and quintet to big band. Festival gigs, radio recordings and tours throughout Europe followed, as well as an East- Asia tour for the Goethe-Institute. His work is documented on ’ and ’ with Joachim ü Hal Galper, Janusz Stefanski, Alphonse Mouzon, Christoph Spendel, Pax Wallace, Christian Scheuber, Christoph Kaiser, Werner Goos, Joachim Fuchs, Georg Lawall, and many others. His sound on the saxophone is strongly influenced by South-Indian classical music, as well as some European musicians such as Jan Garbarek. The happy encounter with lutenist Johannes Vogt triggered a strong fascination for old European music and the European music traditions. A fascination that is reflected and brought into a harmonious balance with his other interests, influences and roots in the group “the Timesú. JOHANNES VOGT Johannes Vogt was born in 1953 in Bochum, where he gained his first stage experience as an electric guitarist. He later studied classical guitar, lute and musicology in Heidelberg, where he lives and works today.

    Catalogue 2009/10 ECM Paul Griffiths Bread and Water Here is someone standing at the entrance to the gallery who goes on talking all the time while almost all the visitors who come are rushing by in their eagerness to inspect what is on show inside. The hall a little way beyond is packed with rare and wonderful things, beautifully laid out and informatively labelled. There is much to see, much to learn. This is what the visitors have come for. Why, then, linger at the doorway? Why wait? But you, you have stopped. Thank you. Yes, this is the gallery, this the exhibition: a catalogue. We can use the word either to mean this paper object you hold in your hands or the totality of items a publisher or, as in this case, record company has available for sale: the CATALOGUE, as we may put it. Such a CATALOGUE is changeable as the ocean is: things will go (though rarely, where ECM is concerned), more will come. The catalogue, on the other hand, is fixed, a photograph of the ocean. There was a moment, probably before it reached print, when the catalogue was identical with the CATALOGUE. But that moment has passed and will not come again, for the ocean is growing and the photograph cannot. Is the catalogue therefore impoverished? No, no more than a photograph is. This is no snapshot, no fuzzy image trapped half_thoughtlessly on a mobile phone. Look at what you have in your hands: this is something well made, something composed. A professional photographer must have been invited to make a study of the ocean.

    “Jazz Without Moment” Miroslav Vitous: Universal Syncopations ECM 1863 038 506-2 If musicians appear on a record without ever playing together, are they a band? If the music they improvise is recorded at different times by playing to a tape, is it “jazz?” These are the questions which underlie consideration of Miroslav Vitous’ new ECM release, Universal Syncopations. The arc of the bassist’s career is a study in the power of the right idea at the wrong moment. On the strength of some New York City jam sessions, Mr. Vitous got the call to play with Roy Haynes on Chick Corea’s third solo album. The product was Now He Sings, Now He Sobs, the 1968 disc which moved Mr. Corea to leading-artist status as both player and composer. Mr. Vitous’ virtuostic if somewhat formulaic performance on that record earned him a solo turn the following year, Mountain in the Clouds for Atlantic. This fine disc featured a who’s who of the New York scene of the day, including such well-known players as John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock and Jack DeJohnette. After a very brief visit with Miles Davis’ band, Mr. Vitous went on to form a new avant-garde free/electronic group with the saxophonist Wayne Shorter and keyboardist Josef Zawinul. The result is documented on Weather Report’s first record, I Sing the Body Electric. In fairly short order, though, the other two leaders decided to turn from astronomy (i.e. space exploration) to physics (through the mode of fusion). Mr. Vitous was gone, the band turned toward more formal compositions and the rest is history.

    1 Musiker zum Mitnehmen Das CD- und DVD-Angebot der Bibliotheken zum Festival 2018 2 Enjoy Jazz – in der Metropolregion Vom 2. Oktober bis 17. November findet in Mannheim, Heidelberg und Ludwigshafen das 20. Internationale Festival für Jazz und Anderes statt. Fast sieben Wochen lang wird in weit über 60 Veranstaltungen jede Menge Musik aus den Bereichen Jazz, Weltmusik, Indierock, Ethnopop, Crossover und auch Klassik präsentiert. Viele international bekannte Namen sind dabei wie z. B. der norwegische Jazzpianist und Romanautor Ketil Bjørnstad, der ebenfalls norwegische Saxofonist Jan Garbarek oder der Saxofonist Joshua Redman aus den USA. Auch viele große Ensembles treten auf, z. B. das australische Jazz-Trio The Necks, das deutsche Pablo-Held-Trio oder die Schweizer Jazz-Band Nik Bärtsch’s Ronin, die inzwischen fast jedes Jahr dabei ist. Mit der kanadischen Indie-Rockband Esmerine, der amerikanischen Soul-Sängerin Avery Sunshine und der Musik im Kontext Bernd Alois Zimmermann wird die Brücke zu anderen Musikgattungen geschlagen. Auch die deutsche Jazz-Szene ist reich vertreten mit Künstlern wie dem Pianisten Michael Wollny, der Cellistin Anja Lechner oder dem Träger des diesjährigen SWR-Jazzpreises Sebastian Gille. Regionale Größen wie der stil-prägende Gitarrist Claus Boesser-Ferrari oder der in Ludwigshafen lebende Schlagzeuger Erwin Ditzner ergänzen das vielfältige Angebot. The mutli-gifted bassist began work on “Universal Syncopations II” immediately after completing its critically acclaimed predecessor. The core group for most of this disc’s length features drummer Gerald Cleaver and saxophonist Campbell, players who have toured extensively with Miroslav in recent seasons. “Almost all the ensemble playing is live this time,” Miroslav notes. “Universal Syncopations II” nonetheless proposes a wider stylistic range than volume one, as orchestral colours now swirl around its shifting cast of modern jazz players and choirs loom out of the mix.
