We’ve featured an article on the rising popularity of multihulls entering Race Week and other regattas around the world. Throughout the pages of REEF Magazine, you will find a preview of our favourite on-shore events, and we think you’ll be inspired by entrepreneur and surfboard shaper Hayden Cox as he launches his newest venture. Internationally renowned chefs Guillaume Brahimi and Matt Moran have shared recipes for you to enjoy at home and they will be dishing up culinary experiences during Race Week. In the following pages you’ll see highlights from new events we introduced this year. We pushed the limits with our Endurance Series by doubling the Stamford Hamilton Island Hilly Half Marathon to include a full marathon for the event’s 10th year. The inaugural Active Women’s Weekend celebrated women who have excelled in fitness. We were fortunate enough to have Olympians Libby Trickett and Eloise Wellings attend the events and share their knowledge. I hope you enjoy this issue of REEF Magazine, As I write, the countdown is well inclusiveness of what happened to the sailing full of holiday inspiration and stories, but more and truly on for this year’s Audi community after the day’s racing. Each time he competed he looked forward to sailing on the Btropical waters around the island, the excitement that came with racing in warm tradewinds, and the wonderful camaraderie to be shared with fellow sailors both on and off the water. The opportunity to acquire Hamilton Island was a rare event and one he relished. Starting in 2003, dad undertook a major transformation of the island which was consistent with his dream to create an Australian guest facility of the highest standard, surrounded by the beautiful Great Barrier Reef. We are extraordinarily proud of his achievements and his ability to inspire those around him. We continue to fulfil his legacy and remain deeply passionate about his desire to satisfy the high expectations of all our guests and our employees. At a time when the U.S. has been weighed down by its slowest recovery since the Great Depression, when Europe’s currency threatens its union and, I might add when our critics flood the field with stories that refuse to move beyond the misdeeds at two of our papers in Britain, I am delighted to report something about News Corporation you Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer might not know from the headlines: News Corporation In 2012, for the second year in a row, we have brought our stockholders double-digit growth in total segment operating income. • Media Ownership Chart
In 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the U.S. At the time, Ben Bagdikian was called "alarmist" for pointing this out in his book, The Media Monopoly . In his 4th edition, published in 1992, he wrote "in the U.S., fewer than two dozen of these extraordinary creatures own and operate 90% of the mass media" -- controlling almost all of America's newspapers, magazines, TV and radio stations, books, records, movies, videos, wire services and photo agencies. He predicted then that eventually this number would fall to about half a dozen companies. This was greeted with skepticism at the time. When the 6th edition of The Media Monopoly was published in 2000, the number had fallen to six. Since then, there have been more mergers and the scope has expanded to include new media like the Internet market. More than 1 in 4 Internet users in the U.S. now log in with AOL Time-Warner, the world's largest media corporation. In 2004, Bagdikian's revised and expanded book, The New Media Monopoly , shows that only 5 huge corporations -- Time Warner, Disney, Murdoch's News Corporation, Bertelsmann of Germany, and Viacom (formerly CBS) -- now control most of the media industry in the U.S. General Electric's NBC is a close sixth. • How to Write a Good Letter to the Editor: QLD a Guide to Writing Awesome, Powerful Letters
How to write a good letter to the editor: QLD A Guide to writing awesome, powerful letters Letters to the editor of local papers are an excellent way for politicians to gauge what the public is thinking. This is a how-to guide for writing powerful and useful letters that can inform the public debate around Adani’s coal project. What makes a good letter? Some tips: ● The best letters are short, snappy and succinct - never longer than 200 words. ● Try to limit your letter to one central idea so it is clear and easy to read. Don’t be afraid to use humour if it suits! ● Good letters are timely if they are in response to a big announcement or event. This means written and sent on the same day. ● Back-up your claims with facts where appropriate. There are many resources on our website (see below for links). ● Try to weave in a personal story if you can and it is fitting. For example: ○ I’m a tourist operator on the Reef and Adani’s coal mine will put my business in jeopardy. ○ I am a teacher and see school students are very attuned to the impact of climate change on the Reef and Adani’s role in this. ○ I went to visit the Reef last year and am saddened by the fact the QLD Government is ignoring coral bleaching events in favour of more coal mining. ○ I’m a Townsville resident who has experienced the mining industry’s boom-bust cycles and I think the future of Townsville should be solar.

  • 'Flying' Boat 23 May 2015, by Veronique Dupont
French adventurer seeks Pacific record with 'flying' boat 23 May 2015, by Veronique Dupont shallow waves off the coast of San Pedro, just south of Los Angeles. This is Thebault's first journey in three months on the ship that set a speed sailing record of over 50 knots in 2009, and now he is ready to attempt to best a crossing mark: reaching Hawaii from the City of Angels in under 4.19 days. "We want that record," the fiery and passionate Frenchman said. A key to that goal is to keep the Hydroptere intact. It's broken down four times. "The first challenge is to keep the structure," said Alain Thébault of France, skipper of the "Hydroptère" the sailor. yacht, on a test run in Los Angeles, California on May 20, 2015 "It will work well in flight stability between 20 and 29 knots with three-meter swells," Thebault said. Skimming across the surface of the vast Pacific, Alain Thebault scans the horizon with his blue Breton eyes. He is feeling good. A record is there to be broken. "It's like a magic carpet," Thebault said aboard the cutting-edge "Hydroptere" sailboat, which he hopes to pilot halfway across the Pacific from Los Angeles to Honolulu in record time. Off the California coast under azur-blue skies, Thebault accelerated the hydrofoil supercraft to 30 knots as the 18-meter (60-foot) boat stands on three foils that claw the waves, lifting the hull fully out of the water. Alain Thébault of France stands next to the "Hydroptère" The few passengers cling to the side as they prior to attempting a record crossing from Los Angeles to experience the sensation of flying for a few Hawaii in under 4.19 days moments.
