Details of the geology of Paracuellos Group; Aluenda Formation; Codos the area and the age of the known fossils are poorly understood or not universally agreed upon. NOTES ON THE ORDOVICIAN FOSSILS FROM BEAR ISLAND COLLECTED DU RING THE SWEDISH EXPEDITIONS OF 1898 AND 1899 BY OLAF HOLTEDAHL uring his Arctic Expedition in the summer of 1898 A. G. D NATHORST 1 succeeded in finding fossils in a limestone of the socalled Heclahook-system of Bear Island, the small inlet lying iso1ated between Norway and Spitzbergen, at about 7 41/2 o N. L. (see map p. 91 ). This Heclahook-system consists of a series of limestone, dolomite, quartzitic sandstone and shale, folded and generally very much pressed, found by A. E. NORDENSKI6LD during his visits in 1864 and 1868 to be very similar to the sedimentary series of Spitzbergen, that by him was given the name of Heclahook after a locality on the north coast. The fossils were few and very fragmentary, cephalopods being the most abundant. They were given to G. LINDSTR6M for further investigation, and the results appeared in a paper "On a species of Tetradium from Beeren Eiland" 2. While the other fossils found, Actinoceras sp., a strophomenoid brachiopod and fragments of crinoidal stems were found insufficient to date the horizon, the occurrence of a Tetradium proved the Ordovician t NATHORST: Några upplysningar til! den nya kartan Ofver Beeren Ei land. The Viruan (Middle Ordovician) of Öland
The Viruan (Middle Ordovician) of Öland By Valdar Jaanusson ABSTRACT.-The stratigraphy and lithology of the Viruan (Middle Ordovician) Iimestones of the bed-rock of Öland are described based on three bares and on field work in the outcrop area. A combined litho- and bio-stratigraphic classification (termed topo-stratigraphic) is introduced for the described sequence. The names of the Estonian stages (Aserian, Lasnamägian, Uhakuan, and Kukrusean) are used as chrono-stratigraphic references instead of the previous Swedish names of the units of stage category (Platyurus, Schroeteri, Crassicauda, and Ludibundus, re spectivcly). New topo-stratigraphic divisions are Segerstad Limestone (of Aserian age), Skärlöv, Seby, and Folkeslunda Limestones (of Lasnamägian age), Furudal, Källa, and Persnäs Lime stones (of Uhakuan age), and Dalby Limestone (of Kukrusean age in the bed-rock of Öland). The Aserian Lasnamägian topo-stratigraphic divisions have the same lithological characteris and tics throughout Öland. The Uhakuan beds are developed as calcilutites (Furudal Limestone) on southern Öland continuing as a tongue (Källa Limestone) on northern Öland. The middle and upper part of the Uhakuan beds of northern Öland consist of calcarenites (Persnäs Limestone) lithologically indistiguishable from the Kukrusean Dalby Limestone which forms the bed-rock only on northern Öland. Within the Segerstad Limestone two zones are distinguished (z. of Angelinoceras latum and z. of Illaenus planifrons).H ouvr ' s zones of Lituites discors, L. lituus, and L. perfectus are of Lasna mägian age, and their stratigraphic position and fauna! characteristics are described. Fossils from the Lower Cambrian of Bornholm

POULSEN FOSSILS FROM THE LOWER CAMBRIAN OF BORNHOLM Det Kongelige Danske Videnskabernes Selskab Matematisk-fysiske Meddelelser 36, 2 Kommissionær: Munksgaard København 1967 Synopsis A Lower Cambrian fauna from Bornholm consisting of 34 species is described. The ol- dest of the Lower Cambrian rocks, the Balka quartzite, contains trace fossils referable to Diplocraterion, Tigillites, and Skolithos, and in addition to these some worm remains com- parable to Byronia MATTHEW. After a hiatus follows siltstone („Green shales” of several au- thors) and Bispebjerg sandstone which represent one single cycle of sedimentation. The silt- stone contains a rich fauna which is essentially endemic. Two new genera and seventeen new species are established. The Lower Cambrian age of the siltstone appears clearly from the occurrence of Fordilla troyensis WALCOTT and Hyolilhellus micans BILLINGS. The Bispebjerg sandstone has only yielded a fragment of Hyolithellus micans and a single specimen of the trace fossil Cruziana dispar LINNARSSON. The conditions of sedimentation and the stratigra- phical position of the Bornholm Lower Cambrian are disscussed. To investigate the efects of these processes on fossil occurrence, detailed microfacies analysis, Organophosphatic biostratigraphic data, and multivariate analyses are integrated from an exemplar stratigraphic section Taphonomy intersecting a suite of lower Cambrian carbonate palaeoenvironments in the northern Flinders Ranges, South Biominerals Australia. The succession deepens upsection, across a low-gradient shallow-marine shelf. Six depositional Facies Hardgrounds Sequences are identifed ranging from protected (FS1) and open (FS2) shelf/lagoonal systems, high-energy inner ramp shoal complex (FS3), mid-shelf (FS4), mid- to outer-shelf (FS5) and outer-shelf (FS6) environments. Non-metric multi-dimensional scaling ordination and two-way cluster analysis reveal an underlying bathymetric gradient as the main control on the distribution of SSFs. -

Box 50007, 7 SE-104 05, Stockholm, Sweden. 8 2Palaeoecosystems Group, Department of Earth Sciences, Durham University, Durham 9 DH1 3LE, UK. 10 11 Mobergellans were one of the first Cambrian skeletal groups to be recognized yet have 12 long remained one of the most problematic in terms of biological function and affinity. 13 Typified by a disc-shaped, phosphatic sclerite the most distinctive character of the 14 group is a prominent set of internal scars, interpreted as representing sites of former 15 muscle attachment. Predominantly based on muscle scar distribution, mobergellans 16 have been compared to brachiopods, bivalves and monoplacophorans, however a 17 recurring theory that the sclerites acted as operculum remains untested. Rather than 18 correlate the number of muscle scars between taxa, here we focus on the percentage of 19 the inner surface shell area that the scars constitute. We investigate two mobergellan 20 species, Mobergella holsti and Discinella micans comparing the Cambrian taxa with the 21 muscle scars of a variety of extant and fossil marine invertebrate taxa to test if the 22 mobergellan muscle attachment area is compatible with an interpretation as operculum. 23 The only skeletal elements in our study with a comparable muscle attachment 24 percentage are gastropod opercula. Complemented with additional morphological 25 information, our analysis supports the theory that mobergellan sclerites acted as an 26 operculum presumably from a tube-living organism. -

Published 9 December 2014 Nidelric pugio gen. et sp. nov. from the Cambrian Series 2 Heilinpu Formation, Chengjiang Lagersta¨tte, Yunnan Province, China, is an ovoid, sac-like metazoan that bears single-element spines on its surface. N. Correspondence and pugio shows no trace of a gut, coelom, anterior differentiation, appendages, or internal organs that would suggest a bilateral body plan. Instead, the sac-like morphology invites comparison with the radially requests for materials symmetrical chancelloriids. However, the single-element spines of N. pugio are atypical of the complex should be addressed to multi-element spine rosettes borne by most chancelloriids and N. pugio may signal the ancestral X.G.H. (xghou@ynu. chancelloriid state, in which the spines had not yet fused. Alternatively, N. pugio may represent a group of edu.cn) radial metazoans that are discrete from chancelloriids. Whatever its precise phylogenetic position, N. pugio expands the known disparity of Cambrian scleritome-bearing animals, and provides a new model for reconstructing scleritomes from isolated microfossils. -

Alleged cnidarian Sphenothallus in the Late Ordovician of Baltica, its mineral compo- sition and microstructure. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 60 (4): 1001–1008. Sphenothallus is a problematic fossil with possible cnidarian affinities. Two species of Sphenothallus, S. aff. longissimus and S. kukersianus, occur in the normal marine sediments of the Late Ordovician of Estonia. S. longissimus is more common than S. kukersianus and has a range from early Sandbian to middle Katian. Sphenothallus had a wide paleo- biogeographic distribution in the Late Ordovician. The tubes of Sphenothallus are composed of lamellae with a homo- geneous microstructure. The homogeneous microstructure could represent a diagenetic fabric, based on the similarity to diagenetic structures in Torellella (Cnidaria?, Hyolithelminthes). Tubes of Sphenothallus have an apatitic composition, but one tube contains lamellae of diagenetic calcite within the apatitic structure. Sphenothallus presumably had origi- nally biomineralized apatitic tubes. Different lattice parameters of the apatite indicate that biomineralization systems of phosphatic cnidarians Sphenothallus and Conularia sp. may have been different.
