The following correction was printed in the Observer's For the Record column, Sunday 15 May 2011. This article included several individuals who would not claim to be British, including Ha-Joon Chang, Amartya Sen, Seamus Heaney, Colm Tóibín and Fintan O'Toole. It's David (not Derek) Marquand, Antony (not Anthony) Beevor, Seumas (not Seamus) Milne and Andrew (not Anthony) Adonis. And Brigid Brophy died in 1995. Kings of Edom. Omnipotence Immortality Have numerous Horrors as minions Ability to grant their human followers across the universe wishes and powers beyond their wildest dreams Induce insanity among normal humans Being beyond human knowledge. The Kings of Edom are terrible Lovecraftian-style alien-gods and major antagonists in the computer game Champions Online , although imprisoned from mainstream reality (speculated to be Qliphoth) they are served by innumerable demons known as Horrors as well as madmen and women from across the universe who seek power, wealth or depravity in their name. Contents. Origin. Vulshoth (Champions RPG, Arcane Adversaries). The Kings of Edom are beings from dimensions that ceased to exist eons ago, the only survivors. They have existed for billions of years, traveling from dimension to dimension, becoming more powerful with time. Few worlds have ever been visited by them, but wherever they have appeared horror and destruction has been the result. Until an inter-dimensional alliance of cosmic and mystical powers united against them. The Kings of Edom were defeated, and the survivors were bound in prison worlds and dimensions. Agenda of the Kings of Edom. The Kings of Edom themselves see most sentient life as animals (Elder Worms known to be an exception), which are to be trained as pets, used as food, or simply pests to be exterminated. They feed on suffering, despair and madness - their realm is one of utter anarchy and ruin with no hope and no end, their minions often embody the darkest aspects of the human mind and spirit while those who seek out their power are often destroyed by it. The Kings of Edom can not be destroyed, they are eternal and without limit. Abilities of the Kings of Edom. They can travel across the cosmos and the multiverse itself at will. Possess vast psionic and mystical powers, including inter-dimensional telepathy. Able to destroy cities purely by using their gigantic physical bodies. Kings of Edom of Legend. Vulshoth : Sealed into an armored shell and placed in a pocket dimension full of lethal traps. It is a gigantic entity taking the form of 5 giant eyes surrounding a bird-like beak that comes out of a round floating slimy mass of tentacles. Most go mad at seeing Vulshoth and it's tentacles drain lifeforce by touch. Deizzhorath : Being of energy and mathematics. Who disintegrates anything it touches. Imprisoned in a dimension which is a gate to a million points in time and space. It is everywhere and nowhere, scattered across time and space, a million-dimension entity. Occasionally a few filaments will enter normal time and space, and destroy whatever it touches in an instant, whether a atom or a starship. Esleggua : Giant pillar of slimy tentacles and fanged mouths. It emits an emotion numbing howl that makes one an uncaring, fearless, ruthless, and cold sentient. Minions of the Kings of Edom. Their minions have one overriding objective, to break their Eldritch masters free so that they can infect all reality once again with their chaotic taint. However their their minions can be defeated and the heroes of light and order must unite to take down these beasts in order to prevent their demonic masters from breaking free and infecting reality with their chaos taint. People who obtain some of the powers of the Kings of Edom are known as Edomites - becoming lesser-gods in the process, many evil beings seek this fate and some (such as Luther Black and Shadow Destroyer) have seemingly succeeded in doing so. Randomized controlled trial of brief cognitive behaviour therapy versus treatment as usual in recurrent deliberate self-harm: the POPMACT study. Background: We carried out a large randomized trial of a brief form of cognitive therapy, manual-assisted cognitive behaviour therapy (MACT) versus treatment as usual (TAU) for deliberate self-harm. Method: Patients presenting with recurrent deliberate self-harm in five centres were randomized to either MACT or (TAU) and followed up over 1 year. MACT patients received a booklet based on cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) principles and were offered up to five plus two booster sessions of CBT from a therapist in the first 3 months of the study. Ratings of parasuicide risk, anxiety, depression, social functioning and global function, positive and negative thinking, and quality of life were measured at baseline and after 6 and 12 months. Results: Four hundred and eighty patients were randomized. Sixty per cent of the MACT group had both the booklet and CBT sessions. There were seven suicides, five in the TAU group. The main outcome measure, the proportion of those repeating deliberate self-harm in the 12 months of the study, showed no significant difference between those treated with MACT (39%) and treatment as usual (46%) (OR 0.78, 95% CI 0.53 to 1.14, P=0.20). Conclusion: Brief cognitive behaviour therapy is of limited efficacy in reducing self-harm repetition, but the findings taken in conjunctin with the economic evaluation (Byford et al. 2003) indicate superiority of MACT over TAU in terms of cost and effectiveness combined. Creed 3 Should Bring Back Clubber Lang (But Not Rocky) Creed 3 is the perfect opportunity to bring back Mr. T as Clubber Lang and allow the franchise to move forward with Sylvester Stallone's Rocky Balboa. Creed 3 should include the return of Clubber Lang instead of Rocky Balboa. Although there was plenty of skepticism around Creed relaunching the Rocky franchise, the two films led by director Michael B. Jordan have proved to be quite remarkable. Both films were critically well received and did well at the box office, as audiences saw the franchise move forward with Jordan's Adonis Creed, who also had Sylvester Stallone's Rocky by his side. Development on Creed 3 is moving forward and now has Michael B. Jordan confirmed to direct. So far, there are no details about where the story will go after Creed II . One idea that is quite popular with fans is that Creed 3 could bring back Mr. T as Clubber Lang. Stallone originally planned to bring Lang back in Rocky Balboa as a retired fighter who was a reformed Christian and part-time commentator. When that didn't happen, the Rocky III antagonist was considered to return in Creed II and feature the introduction of his son. However, the franchise chose to bring back Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) and introduce his son Viktor (Florian Munteanu) instead. Previous installments of the Rocky and Creed movie franchise might have moved past the idea to bring back Clubber Lang, but that just means that Creed 3 is now in the perfect position to do so. The end of Creed II saw Rocky and Adonis go their separate ways after confronting their shared past with the Drago family. Adonis might still be the reigning WBC Heavyweight Champion, but a big part of his arc in Creed II was balancing boxing and his growing family. The return of Clubber Lang could be used to give Adonis a chance to learn what life can be like once his time as a fighter is over. Clubber Lang's story after Rocky III has yet to be explicitly revealed in the movies, but Stallone's plans for him paint an interesting idea for how he could be used in Creed 3 . Clubber and Adonis could cross paths if the former southpaw fighter calls one of Adonis' recent fights. If Clubber has turned away from his antics of the past, he might even be interested in talking to Adonis to apologize for the scrums he had with Apollo in the past. Through their conversations, though, Adonis can learn about what Clubber's life has been like after boxing. In doing so, Adonis could start to understand where his life is going. This would also present Creed 3 with a way to give fans a taste of nostalgia by featuring another character from the franchise's past. But more importantly, this would also provide a possible explanation for Rocky to not come back. Creed II worked as a terrific ending to Rocky's story, as he walks away from the boxing culture to repair his relationship with his son. Stallone said not too long after Creed II 's release that this was the end of Rocky's story, and even though it would certainly be strange not to see Rocky in Creed 3 , Clubber can step in and take his place. Adonis deserves to be out of Rocky's shadow completely, and Clubber Lang's involvement could ensure that is possible while also presenting Creed 3 with a new dynamic at the center. Olympians. George O'Connor is a Greek mythology buff and a classic superhero comics fan, and he's out to remind us how much our pantheon of superheroes (Superman, Batman, the X-Men, etc) owes to mankind's ORIGINAL superheroes: the Greek pantheon. In OLYMPIANS, O'Connor draws from primary documents to reconstruct and retell classic Greek myths. But these stories aren't sedate, scholarly works. They're action-packed, fast-paced, high-drama adventures, with monsters, romance, and not a few huge explosions. O'Connor's vibrant, kinetic art brings ancient tales to undeniable life, in a perfect fusion of super-hero aesthetics and ancient Greek mythology. Volume 1 of OLYMPIANS, ZEUS: King OF THE GODS, introduces readers to the ruler of the Olympian Pantheon, telling his story from his boyhood to his ascendance to supreme power.
