Nuachtlitir Chomhar Dún Chaocháin Teo EAGRÁN 1 LÚNASA 2005 NUACHTLITIR CHILL CHOMÁIN Fáilte go dtí an chéad eagrán de Nuachtlitir Chomhar Dún Chaocháin Teo. Ins in eagrán seo tá cuir síos ar pharóiste Chill Chomáin, ar chúlra, ról agus gníomhaíochtaí an chomharchumainn agus ar Chúigear Ros Dumhach atá i bpríosúin i gCnoc na Seimre ón 29ú Meitheamh 05 mar gheall ar an seasamh a thóg said in aghaidh an chomhlachta ollmhór Shell i gcomhphairtíocht le Statoil agus Marathon atá i mbun togra Gháis na Coiribe a fhorbairt. Tá Micheál Ó Seighin, Cathaoirleach an chomharchumainn, mar dhuine den chúigear. Béimid ag coinneáil súil ghéar ar an togra seo sna míonna atá amach romhainn. Tá béim níos mó ná ariamh ar chúrsaí pleanála teanga agus céard atá i ndán don Ghaeilge amach anseo. Chuir an comharchumann iarratas ar thionscnamh pleanála teanga chuig an Roinn Gnóthaí Pobail, Tuaithe agus Gaeltachta le anailís a dhéanamh ar staid na Gaeilge sa pharóiste agus le plean teanga a fhorbairt agus a chur i bhfeidhim bunaithe ar thorthaí na hanailíse sin. Ar ndóigh braitheann caomhnú, buanú agus leathnú na Gaeilge ar dea-thoil agus ar chomhoibriú an phobail áitiúil i bpáirtíocht le heagraisí éagsúla stáit agus fó- stáit. Mar a deireann an seanfhocal “Is ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine”. Welcome to the first edition of Comhar Dún Chaocháin Teo‟s Newsletter. This issue features a description of the parish of Cill Chomáin, the background, role and activities of the comharchumann and an open letter from the men known as the Rossport Five who are imprisoned in Cloverhill Prison since 29th June 05 because of the stand they took against the corporate giant Shell and its partners Statoil and Marathon, the developers of the Corrib Gas project. Micheál Ó Seighin, chairman of the comharchumann, is one of the five. We will be keeping a close eye on this project in the months ahead. * Nuachtlitir Áitiúil * A Community Newsletter * Guth an phobail ar mhaithe leis an bpobal * Provides a voice for the local community and an update on development issues San eagrán seo: In this issue Sonraí Teangmhála 2 Paróiste Chill Chomain 2 Comhar Dún Chaocháin Teo 3 Ról agus Gníomhaíochtaí 3.. Interface: a journal for and about social movements Bibliography Volume 10 (1-2): 215 - 278 (2018) MacSheoin, Rural agitation in Ireland Rural agitation in Ireland 1710-2010: a bibliography Tomás Mac Sheoin Abstract This bibliography brings together recent secondary literature on agitation in rural Ireland over a period of three centuries. Keywords: Ireland, rural agitation, land war, peasant resistance, Whiteboys, rural protest, tithe war, Ribbonism Introduction Studies of various aspects of rural agitation in Ireland have flourished over the last four decades. Prior to the publication of T Desmond Williams’ edited collection on secret societies in 1973 –generally seen as the beginning of this flourishing- rural unrest had not been a major subject of unrest: aside from O’Donoghue’s work on tithes and a variety of work published in local archaeological and historical journals, the land war had been almost the sole such subject of interest to mainstream Irish historiography. This changed with the arrival of social history and ‘history from below’ under the influence of English historians such as E.P. Thompson. As Fitzpatrick noted in a 1985 review essay ‘In addition to the three volumes under review, at least twenty-two major studies of various aspects of rural unrest have been published since 1978’ (Fitzpatrick 1985: 98). By the time Cronin published her review in 2012 her bibliography had swelled to twelve pages, though some of the listed works were contextual rather than focused on specific cases of agitation. My recent review in Interface featured a bibliography of eighteen pages, though again a fair number of the listed works were contextual.

  • Ideological Diversity and Alliance Building in Social Movements: the Campaign Against Shell in Ireland
IDEOLOGICAL DIVERSITY AND ALLIANCE BUILDING IN SOCIAL MOVEMENTS: THE CAMPAIGN AGAINST SHELL IN IRELAND ST.JOHN Ó DONNABHÁIN Submitted in part fulfilment of the requirements for the MA in Community Education, Equality and Social Activism Departments of Adult & Community Education and Sociology National University of Ireland, Maynooth 2014 Supervisor: Dr Laurence Cox ABSTRACT This thesis asks the question: How can social movement alliances manage to acknowledge and work across difference in conflict situations? It seeks to add to deeper understandings of movements by examining a complex multi-group movement context in which complicated and very layered tensions were at issue. It seeks to investigate these issues through a case study of tensions between movement actors within the campaign against Shell in North West Mayo, Ireland, between English ecological activists, Dublin and Cork Shell to Sea groups, and Irish members of the Rossport Solidarity Camp. The issue of how to acknowledge and work with difference is a hugely important one for the building and maintenance of contemporary movement alliances for practitioners, and is also an area of interest for social movement scholars. Connected with this, alliance is largely accepted as increasing a movement’s chance of success, and is usually something which is also seen as desirable by movement actors. I undertook my research within a Participatory Action Research (PAR) frame. As such, my research was a highly involved process, within the frames of looking at dynamics of alliance formation, and saw its main themes emerge from the research participants. The tensions that emerged in the campaign were organised around a discourse of colonialism put forward by members of Dublin and Cork Shell to Sea, but the issues also encompassed differences between ecological and class-based ideologies, as well as significant differences between political cultures of direct action, and ones based around political organising.
