Download Her Ghost Into Any Artificial Body CHANGES IN THE CONCEPTUALIZATION OF BODY AND MIND IN JAPANESE POPULAR CULTURE, 1950 - 2015 by Yuki Ohsawa A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2016 © Yuki Ohsawa, 2016 Abstract This dissertation investigates changes in the conceptualizations of technologically-enhanced beings and bodies in contemporary Japanese science fiction anime, manga, and literature. These stories/images and real-life transitions make us consider such issues as what constitutes the body, how the body is now changing, and what the relationship between the body and the self/mind might be. In order to understand ourselves and contemporary conditions and issues, which occur in specific relation to differences inherent in each body—sex, race, disability, disease, and so on—it is essential to analyze these changes in body notions as contemporary visual media themselves critique and discuss them. Emerging from a close reading of texts from the 1950s to the 2010s, and utilizing theories from Donna Haraway, Yōrō Takeshi, and others, this project argues that, since the 1950s, Japanese popular culture has created a wide range of imagined technological bodies, the depiction of which engages with important philosophical and ethical questions. In addition, although some works from the 2000s and 2010s present sentient beings that are essentially bodiless, we see a generally steady trend toward an emphasis on the importance of the material body, as well as increasing monism as opposed to Cartesian dualism. Another trend exposed ii through this study is the surprising persistence of the categories of sex, gender, and sexuality, even in depictions that are otherwise radically posthuman. iii Preface This of you who have supported me and given me great joy during my PhD journey! Firstly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisor Prof. Sharalyn Orbaugh for having me as her PhD student and her continuous support during my PhD study. Because of her inspiration, I was able to find a fascinating topic, the posthuman in Japanese popular culture. Her guidance helped me throughout my research and writing of this dissertation. In addition to my supervisor, I would like to thank my dissertation committee, Prof. Hyung-Gu Lynn and Prof. Christina Laffin, for their insightful comments and for the critical questions that permitted me to have various perspectives on my research. With their kind support from my comprehensive examinations, I was able to exceed my main field, modern Japanese visual culture, and develop ideas related to cultural circulation in East Asia as well as pre-modern Japanese literature. Widening my research space and time has continuously helped me to consider about the conceptualizations around human beings. I also would like to thank to my dissertation examiners, Dr. Joshua S. Mostow, Dr. David Edgington, and Dr. Rebecca Copeland for their time and for the questions that expanded my future research possibilities. My sincere thanks also go to my MA supervisor, Dr. Timothy Iles, for his continuing mentorship. Without his encouragement and huge support, I could not have arrived at this stage. Also, thanks to my first MA supervisor, Prof. Masaru Ishizumi, for giving me the opportunity to study abroad in Canada. Because of his suggestion, my life was able drastically to change and to go beyond Japan. To my wonderful friends, Nathen Clerici, Si Nae Park, Nick Hall, Wu Meng, Ben Whaley, Douglas Ober, Eunseon Kim, Casey Collins, and all the graduate students in Asian Studies at UBC who could come along with me, thank you so much for being with me and supporting me. I have enjoyed sharing our researches as well as going to the ocean and mountains refresh my body and soul. Without all of you, I could neither survive nor enjoy this PhD journey! vii To my special friend, Jerry Hevesi, thank you for everything you have done for me from the beginning of my Canadian life, since 2007.

In what is rapidly becoming one of my favorite series, Nihei again puts out another solid, epic science fiction manga. The quality of the storytelling is what most consistently impresses me, each volume is full of plot revelations and unexpected developments. I hope this series can continue for some time, there doesn’t seem to be any shortage of great ideas in here. If you’ve loved the previous issues then of course you need this one - my only regret is that I didn’t discover Nihei’s work soon enough to get his Blame! series before it went out of print, don’t let that happen with this one!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Abstract: The article discusses the presence and expansion of Japanese and South Korean television productions in the Brazilian Netflix catalog. Bearing in mind that, in recent years, the American company has invested in the diversifica- tion of producing countries, in addition to the United States, we seek to reflect on the participation of Japan and South Korea in this constitution. Through a review of the literature on the topic, combined with an initial mapping of Japanese and South Korean titles that appear on the referred platform in its Brazilian version, it is noticeable Netflix’s ongoing effort to consolidate itself as a global audiovisual mediator and the relevance of the central markets of East Asia and non-English speakers in the constitution of its international and Brazilian catalog.

THE PORTRAYAL OF SUICIDE IN POSTMODERN JAPANESE LITERATURE AND POPULAR CULTURE MEDIA Pedro Manço Teixeira Honors Thesis Final Draft, Spring 2014 Thesis Advisor: Kyle Keoni Ikeda INTRODUCTION Within Japanese society, suicide has been a recurring cultural and social concern explored extensively in various literary and artistic forms, and has evolved into a serious societal epidemic by the end of the 20 th century. This project investigates contemporary Japan’s suicide epidemic through an analysis of the portrayal of suicide in post-1970s Japanese literature, films, and popular culture media of manga 1 and anime 2, and in comparison to empirical data on suicide in Japan as presented in peer-reviewed psychology articles. In the analysis of these contemporary works, particular attention was given to their targeted demographic, the profiles of the suicide victims in the stories, the justifications for suicide, and the relevance of suicide to the plot of each work.

SCMS 2016 CONFERENCE PROGRAM HILTON ATLANTA • ATLANTA, GEORGIA March 30–April 3, 2016 COVER PHOTO: 1940s view of Atlanta’s Auburn Avenue including a sign for Bailey’s Royal Theatre and Big Bethel AME Church Courtesy of Kenan Research Center, Atlanta History Center Letter from the President Dear Friends and Colleagues, On behalf of the SCMS Board of Directors, the Host and Program Committees, and the Home Office staff, let me welcome everyone to Atlanta! Since the SCMS conference was last here twelve years ago, the Society has seen both membership and the conference itself increase dramatically in size. This year in Atlanta we have twice the number of panels as we had in 2004. Our growth confirms the vitality of cinema and media studies, as well as its continuing importance to the academy internationally and to our increasingly globalized societies. I know from previewing the program that it boasts an impressive display of the best, most stimulating work presently being done in our field, which is at once singular in its focus on visual and digital media and yet quite diverse in its scope, intellectual interests and goals, and methodologies. Given the dazzling assortment of panels on tap for the five days of our conference, I hope you will find this year’s selection as exciting and stimulating as in years past. And as dizzying, perhaps, as you try to decide where to go next. To assist you in navigating the program we have arranged for everyone to have access to the Grupio app. Among other features, it allows you to view the entire schedule and then to create your own calendars based on the sessions you want to attend.

  • The Otaku Lifestyle: Examining Soundtracks in the Anime Canon
THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON A THESIS IN Musicology Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MUSIC by MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ B.M., University of Central Missouri, 2014 Kansas City, Missouri 2019 © 2019 MICHELLE JURKIEWICZ ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE OTAKU LIFESTYLE: EXAMINING SOUNDTRACKS IN THE ANIME CANON Michelle Jurkiewicz, Candidate for the Master of Music Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2019 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, or anime, has been popular around the globe for the last sixty years. Anime has its own fan culture in the United States known as otaku, or the obsessive lifestyle surrounding manga and anime, which has resulted in American production companies creating their own “anime.” Japanese filmmakers do not regard anime simply as a cartoon, but instead realize it as genre of film, such as action or comedy. However, Japanese anime is not only dynamic and influential because of its storylines, characters, and themes, but also for its purposeful choices in music. Since the first anime Astro Boy and through films such as Akira, Japanese animation companies combine their history from the past century with modern or “westernized” music. Unlike cartoon films produced by Disney or Pixar, Japanese anime do not use music to mimic the actions on-screen; instead, music heightens and deepens the plot and emotions. This concept is practiced in live-action feature films, and although anime consists of hand-drawn and computer-generated cartoons, Japanese directors and animators create a “film” experience with their dramatic choice of music.
