ABSTRAKT Tato práce si klade za cíl zmapovat vývoj politického myšlení Severského novopohanství a určit faktory, které vedou k politizaci konkrétních typů novopohanských skupin a k jejich příklonu k pravicovému radikalismu. První kapitola po úvodu sestává ze čtyř případových studií, z nichž každá představuje jiný typ skupiny z pohledu místa a okolností vzniku, kontextu, v němž se se vyvíjela jejich náboženská a politická přesvědčení, a ze způsobu legitimizace jejich případného politického aktivismu. Následující dvě kapitoly se soustředí na analýzu historických souvislostí, které zapříčinily rozdílné ideologické směřování skupin v rámci dvou hlavních typů Severského pohanství, Ásatrú a Odinismu, a to ve dvou odlišných kulturních prostředích Evropy a Spojených Států. Závěrečná kapitola přináší syntézu zkoumaných skupin ve vzájemných souvislostech spolu s jejich historickým pozadím; tato syntéza pak nabízí možnou interpretaci procesu jejich radikalizace. -

I briefly describe the Old Norse pagan religion, as well as several extant sources on Old Norse pagan beliefs, before moving on to investigating the Germanic Neopagan movement which started in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. In order to explain this, however, there needs to be a necessary understanding of the creation and development of the Germanic völkisch movement, which directly led to Germanic Neopaganism. Out of völkisch thinking came the modern-day forms of Germanic Neopaganism, manifesting chiefly in Asatru. Its relation to nationalist thinking and its focus on the Nordic gods have drawn comparisons between Asatruers and Nazis, but this line of thinking is unfair and diminishes the faith of all Asatruers. -

This is a neo-Pagan revival of ancient Norse traditions drawn primarily from the Eddas and Sagas. What is important to mention before reading this study, as I was reminded by a Pagan I met at a recent conference, is that not all people who follow this path of expression are racially motivated or oriented. This is a particularly sensitive point for many Pagans who are already a religious minority. The concern she had was that Pagans may face further discrimination if people see them as racists. The differentiation between racialist and non--racialist Odinists will be expressed in the body of the paper. -

Join- ing with Chip Berlet, who published a similar piece in Fairness and Accura- cy in Reporting (FAIR), Lyons declares that Trump is a right-wing populist, not a fascist, per se. For those of a diferent opinion, Lyons reserves blunt reprove, accusing them in the title of“Stale Social Science.” Since he links to my article, “Trump the Fascist,” published in Counterpunch on the same day David Duke commended the Don, I find his article merits response. Firstly, my article’s title is a broad stroke, which perhaps may have under- mined a careful reading of the actual article, itself. -

The Role of Religion in the Collective Identity of the White Racialist Movement1 BETTY A. DOBRATZ This paper applies the concept of identity to the white racialist or separatist movement, typically referred to as the white supremacist movement in many mainstream publications. While similar racial identity and shared perceptions of the meaning of racialism bind the movement together, there are other important concerns that potentially divide the movement but also have served to attract members to it. One of these potentially divisive areas, the differences in religious views, is explored here through an analysis of the white separatist literature and interviews with movement members. Three belief systems of movement members—Christian or Israel Identity, Church of the Creator, and Odinism—are examined. All three contribute to strengthening the racial identity of white racialists, but are at the same time potentially antagonistic to each other. It is suggested that this religious divide will be a key issue in influencing the future development of the movement. In the social movement’s literature the importance of developing a sense of consciousness and identity among movement members is recognized by McAdam’s (1982) political process model, the framing process (Snow et al. 1986), the interpretation of reality (Klandermans 1991), and the new social movements approach that has been extended by Taylor and Whittier (1995). McAdam (1994) acknowledged that the resource mobilization and political process models have not devoted much attention to the cultural or ideational dimensions of collective action. “Mediating between opportunity and action are people and the subjective meanings they attach to their situations” (McAdam 1988:132). -

Appendix A: Canadian Right-Wing Ideologues, Gurus and Lone Actors Andrews, Don (1942–present), a Canadian white supremacist who waged war with Toronto, ON’s communists in the 1970s, was the frst individual to be charged in Canada with wilfully promoting hatred. He also co-founded the Edmund Burke Society with Paul Fromm and Leigh Smith in 1967, and he founded the Nationalist Party of Canada in 1977 (Lauder 2002), which he still leads. In 1974, Andrews ran for Toronto Mayor, coming in a distant second. Most recently, Andrews ran for the 2014 Toronto mayoral election (Hong 2014), but he was unsuccessful. Arcand, Adrien (1899–1967) is the most notorious anti-Semitic in Quebec history, forming the Parti National Society Chretien in 1934 and expanding his organization to Toronto, ON under the group name National Christian Party of Canada in 1938, later known as the National Unity Party in 1949 (Barrett 1987). Beattie, John (1942–present) founded the Toronto-based Canadian Nazi Party in 1965, and he later organized the British People’s League in the late 1980s (Lauder 2002).
