Yggdrasil and Norse cosmology . 237 viii PREFACE Although an interest in World Religions has long been a part of my life, my perspective on the subject changed when I began teaching Comparative Religion at Somerset Community College. If studying and communicating about World Religions was to become a life focus, I realized that I had to grow. When I found James Chancellor, it was clear that he could take me from where I was to what I needed to become. He became a teacher and mentor in the academic study of religion. My return to seminary represented a shift from seeing World Religions as an interest to approaching it as discipline. And it has been a most rewarding journey. I am indebted to my parents, Drs. Forrest and Patrica Calico, for their continual encouragement and sacrificial support of our family. Their many contributions to this project have been invaluable. My wife, Cari, has been a patient and loving companion throughout this journey. Her extraordinary diligence in caring for our family allowed me the freedom to study, travel, think, and write. Ethnographic work is not possible without the participation and commitment of many others. What follows constitutes the beginning of an encounter and engagement this new religion and my honest attempt at understanding its depth and complexity as well as its place in our American context. Calico Louisville, Kentucky May 2013 ix CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Ásatrú (Asatru) is a New Religious Movement (NRM) that seeks to revive the religion and culture of the pre-Christian Norse and Germanic societies. Although it looks to ancient Europe for its inspiration, Asatru is an American religion, part of the contemporary Pagan movement currently thriving in the United States. The following work comprises over two years of research done within Asatru including participant observation, interviews with adherents, and reading in the literature of the movement. The impetus for this project derives from two insights that shaped the direction of my doctoral work in the World Religions PhD program at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. The first insight concerns the nature of religion as a human phenomenon. The study of religion involves an understanding of the history and theology of the great religious traditions. These are among the factors which give context to the specific personal religious experience. But religion is ultimately a lived experience. It occurs at the level of the human life, and its meaning is personal. Wilfred Cantwell Smith has written that “the study of religion is the.

Coinciding with emerging mass dissemination technologies of the period, jazz spread throughout Europe and beyond via gramophone recordings, radio broadcasts and the Hollywood film industry. America’s involvement in the two World Wars, and the subsequent $13 billion Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe as a unified, and US friendly, trading zone further reinforced the proliferation of the new genre (McGregor, 2016; Paterson et al., 2013). The imposition of US trade and cultural products posed formidable challenges to the European identities, rooted as they were in 18th-Century national romanticism. Commercialised cultural representations of the ‘American dream’ captured the imaginations of Europe’s youth and represented a welcome antidote to post-war austerity. This chapter seeks to problematise the historiography and contemporary representations of jazz in the Nordic region, with particular focus on the production and reception of jazz from Norway. Accepted histories of jazz in Europe point to a period of adulatory imitation of American masters, leading to one of cultural awakening in which jazz was reimagined through a localised lens, and given a ‘national voice’. Evidence of this process of acculturation and reimagining is arguably nowhere more evident than in the canon of what has come to be received as the Nordic tone. In the early 1970s, a group of Norwegian musicians, including saxophonist Jan Garbarek (b.1947), guitarist Terje Rypdal (b.1947), bassist Arild Andersen (b.1945), drummer Jon Christensen (b.1943) and others, abstracted more literal jazz inflected reinterpretations of Scandinavian folk songs by Nordic forebears including pianist Jan Johansson (1931-1968), saxophonist Lars Gullin (1928-1976) bassist Georg Riedel (b.1934) (McEachrane 2014, pp.

Wotan is the expression of the kin, Wotan resides in our memory and soul as the archetype of our people. If there were no Wotan then there would be no Folk. Our existence is predicated on his existence. As well as his existence is predicated on ours. Since the two are mutually inclusive and dependent on each other, should one cease to exist then likewise the other shall fall too.

Následující dvě kapitoly se soustředí na analýzu historických souvislostí, které zapříčinily rozdílné ideologické směřování skupin v rámci dvou hlavních typů Severského pohanství, Ásatrú a Odinismu, a to ve dvou odlišných kulturních prostředích Evropy a Spojených Států. Závěrečná kapitola přináší syntézu zkoumaných skupin ve vzájemných souvislostech spolu s jejich historickým pozadím; tato syntéza pak nabízí možnou interpretaci procesu jejich radikalizace.

From this, an attempt is made to establish deviancy. Comparative evidence, such as literary, runic, legal and folkloric evidence will be used critically to shed perspective on burial practices and the artefacts found within the graves. The thesis will mostly cover burials from the Viking Age (late 8th century to the mid- 11th century), but where the comparative evidence dates from other periods, its validity is discussed accordingly. Two types of deviant burial emerged: the criminal and the victim. A third type, which shows distinctive irregularity yet lacks deviancy, is the healer/witch burial.

Written from a US Pagan perspective, for an audience of Indigenous Americans, Pagans, and secondarily scholars of religion, this paper frames US Paganisms as bipartite with traditional and experiential knowledge; explores how being transplanted from ancestral homelands affects US Pagans’ relationship to the land we are on, to the Indigenous people of that land, and any contribution these may make to the larger discussion of indigeneity; and works to dispel common myths about US Pagans by offering examples of practices that the author suggests may be respectful to Indigenous American communities, while inviting Indigenous American comments on this assessment. Germanic Neopaganism, Nordic Nationalism, and Modern Reception of Old Norse Religion and the Vikings Trevor Kieser http://www.duo.uio.no/ Printer: Reprosentralen, Universitetet i Oslo iv Summary The purpose of this paper is to examine the modern reception of Old Norse religion and the image of the Vikings in a Nationalist context. I briefly describe the Old Norse pagan religion, as well as several extant sources on Old Norse pagan beliefs, before moving on to investigating the Germanic Neopagan movement which started in the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. In order to explain this, however, there needs to be a necessary understanding of the creation and development of the Germanic völkisch movement, which directly led to Germanic Neopaganism. Out of völkisch thinking came the modern-day forms of Germanic Neopaganism, manifesting chiefly in Asatru. Its relation to nationalist thinking and its focus on the Nordic gods have drawn comparisons between Asatruers and Nazis, but this line of thinking is unfair and diminishes the faith of all Asatruers.

    Empire of Hope and Tragedy: Jordanes and the Invention of Roman-Gothic History Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Brian Swain Graduate Program in History The Ohio State University 2014 Dissertation Committee: Timothy Gregory, Co-advisor Anthony Kaldellis Kristina Sessa, Co-advisor Copyright by Brian Swain 2014 Abstract This dissertation explores the intersection of political and ethnic conflict during the emperor Justinian’s wars of reconquest through the figure and texts of Jordanes, the earliest barbarian voice to survive antiquity. Jordanes was ethnically Gothic - and yet he also claimed a Roman identity. Writing from Constantinople in 551, he penned two Latin histories on the Gothic and Roman pasts respectively. Crucially, Jordanes wrote while Goths and Romans clashed in the imperial war to reclaim the Italian homeland that had been under Gothic rule since 493. That a Roman Goth wrote about Goths while Rome was at war with Goths is significant and has no analogue in the ancient record. I argue that it was precisely this conflict which prompted Jordanes’ historical inquiry. Jordanes, though, has long been considered a mere copyist, and seldom treated as an historian with ideas of his own. And the few scholars who have treated Jordanes as an original author have dampened the significance of his Gothicness by arguing that barbarian ethnicities were evanescent and subsumed by the gravity of a Roman political identity. They hold that Jordanes was simply a Roman who can tell us only about Roman things, and supported the Roman emperor in his war against the Goths.
