This document has been submitted by the zoologist of the Nomenclature Committee. 2. At the latest meeting of the Nomenclature Committee (fauna) in Geneva, on 23 May 2005, the zoologist of the Nomenclature Committee suggested to consider the Howard and Moore Complete Checklist of the Birds of the World, edited by Dickinson1, as new standard reference for the bird nomenclature. She promised to provide a document for the next NC meeting in 2006 outlining the consequences of the adoption of this reference for the present nomenclature of CITES listed bird species. 3. The present document is based on an analysis carried out by Tim Inskipp (UNEP-WCMC), who compared the bird species so far accepted under CITES with the bird taxa in the The Howard and Moore Complete Checklist of the Birds of the World edited by Dickinson. 4. CITES Appendices currently include altogether 1,570 species or subspecies of birds. The adoption of the Howard and Moore Checklist edited by Dickinson would result in: – 141 one-to-one replacements (86 generic changes, 50 spelling changes, 5 name replacements) (see Annex 1); – 39 changes of species being reduced to subspecies level (see Annex 2); and – 45 split-listings where present subspecies are elevated to species level (see Annex 3). 5. Australian School of Environmental Studies Griffith University Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2001 Successful establishment among introduced birds Abstract Humankind has redistributed a large number of species outside their native geographic ranges. Although the majority of introduction attempts fail to establish populations, the cumulative negative effect of successful non-native species has been and will continue to be large. Historical records of land bird introductions provide one of the richest sources of data for testing hypotheses regarding the factors that affect the successful establishment of non-native populations. However, despite comprehensive summaries of global avian introductions dating back two decades only very recent studies have examined the successful establishment of non-native bird species worldwide. It is clear that a non-random pattern exists in the types of land bird species that have been chosen by humans to be introduced outside their native range. Out of the 44 avian families from which species have been chosen for introduction almost 70% of introduction attempts have been from just five families (Phasianidae, Passeridae, Fringillidae, Columbidae, Psittacidae). Notably, these families include game species, insectivorous song birds, and species from the pet trade. It has been hypothesised that the fate of introduced species may be determined in part by heritable characteristics that are shared by closely related taxa. In my analyses, I have used current comparative methods to demonstrate that intrinsic eco- physiological characteristics are significant predictors of the worldwide success of introduced land bird species. -

Dictionaries of the language of eastern Sumba by Kapita (1982) and Onvlee (1984) include over fifty names for kinds of avifauna with glosses in Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) and Dutch as well as scientific identifications drawn mostly from fieldwork conducted by the naturalist Dammerman in the 1920s. Combining these data wi th ethnoornithological information collected by the author in the domain of Rindi, the eastern Sumbanese classification of birds is discussed with regard to nomenclature, internal structure, and its relation to a general ethnozoological taxonomy. On the basis of recent ornithological stud ies of this part of Indonesia, the association of Sumbanese categories with scientific taxa is also reviewed . Finally, the prominence of certain bird ca tegories in the symbolic idioms of ritual speech, myth, and augury is considered as a factor hypothetically linked with eastern Sumbanesc ethnoornithological classification. Davies,4,5 Reuben Tako,6 and J. Albert C. Uy7 ABSTRACT—The island of Makira in the eastern Solomon Islands is a globally significant priority for bird conservation and, like other islands in Melanesia, its avifauna plays an important role in understanding patterns of biogeography and speciation. Large portions of the island have rarely been visited by ornithologists, however, and published natural history information is limited for many species. We conducted field surveys, interviews, and camera trapping on Makira from October 2015 to February 2016, including the first ornithological surveys in southern Makira. We identify minor differences between the bird communities in the southern and northern parts of the island and report on noteworthy natural history observations, including nest descriptions for Yellow-legged Pigeon (Columba pallidiceps) and Shade Warbler (Horornis parens). We did not detect 3 endangered terrestrial species (Makira Woodhen [Gallinula silvestris], Thick-billed Ground- Dove [Gallicolumba salamonis], and White-bibbed Ground-Dove [Gallicolumba jobiensis]), and all 3 are probably extinct on Makira. High numbers of invasive species are present throughout Makira’s forests, in particular rats (Rattus spp.), which were found at all our survey sites and accounted for nearly 34% of camera trap images, and cats (Felis catus), which were recorded at all sites that received .75 camera-days of survey effort. The widespread presence of invasive predators in remote and unlogged forests helps explain the disappearance of native species from the island. -

Ellie Dyer, 4th November 2015 2 Abstract Alien species are a major component of human-induced environmental change, yet spatial and temporal variation in the drivers of their introduction, and their subsequent distribution and richness, are poorly understood. Here, I present a global analysis of the drivers of this variation for a major animal group, birds (Class Aves), using the newly-created Global Avian Invasions Atlas (GAVIA) database. GAVIA includes information on introduction successes and failures, enabling me to examine the effect of colonisation pressure (the number of species introduced) on alien bird distributions. A description of the GAVIA database is given in Chapter 2, with details on its scope and sources, data collation and validation, and the production of alien range maps. Chapter 3 focuses on the early stages of the invasion pathway, and shows that historical introductions tend to originate in Europe, were driven by the global movements of British colonialism, and involved species deemed useful. Modern introductions, in contrast, tend to originate in Southeast Asia and Africa, are driven by factors associated with wealth, and involve species found in the pet trade. -

Through this work, parasitic chewing lice of common columbiformes of New species Egypt were revised including new data. Three species of pigeons and doves (Streptopelia decaocto Frivaldszky New records 1838, Spilopelia senegalensis Linnaeus 1766 and Columba livia Gmelin 1789) were examined for chewing lice at Chewing lice three different localities. Bird survey included nine repetitions of point count (at 16 points 150 m apart), six days (12 hours each) of mist netting, and 30 McKinnon lists of 20 species. We mist netted individuals of 23 species in Wanang 1 and 37 species in Wanang 3. During the morning point-counts, we recorded 3358 individuals of 82 species in Wanang 1 and 11516 individuals of 122 species in Wanang 3. Altogether we recorded 99 species in slightly disturbed Wanang 1(on the border of conservation area) and 131 species during long-term survey in deep forest of Wanang 3. Here we bring the list of recorded species and information about few of them. We hope that this booklet will be useful for visitors of Wanang area and to villagers.
