    Derek Sayer ANDRÉ BRETON AND THE MAGIC CAPITAL: AN AGONY IN SIX FITS 1 After decades in which the Czechoslovak Surrealist Group all but vanished from the art-historical record on both sides of the erstwhile Iron Curtain, interwar Prague’s standing as the “second city of surrealism” is in serious danger of becoming a truth universally acknowledged.1 Vítězslav Nezval denied that “Zvěrokruh” (Zodiac), which appeared at the end of 1930, was a surrealist magazine, but its contents, which included his translation of André Breton’s “Second Manifesto of Surrealism” (1929), suggested otherwise.2 Two years later the painters Jindřich Štyrský and Toyen (Marie Čermínová), the sculptor Vincenc Makovský, and several other Czech artists showed their work alongside Hans/Jean Arp, Salvador Dalí, Giorgio De Chirico, Max Ernst, Paul Klee, Joan Miró, Wolfgang Paalen, and Yves Tanguy (not to men- tion a selection of anonymous “Negro sculptures”) in the “Poesie 1932” exhibition at the Mánes Gallery.3 Three times the size of “Newer Super-Realism” at the Wads- worth Atheneum the previous November – the first surrealist exhibition on Ameri- 1 Not one Czech artist was included, for example, in MoMA’s blockbuster 1968 exhibition “Dada, Surrealism, and Their Heritage” or discussed in William S.     © Lizzie Thynne, 2010 Indirect Action: Politics and the Subversion of Identity in Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore’s Resistance to the Occupation of Jersey Lizzie Thynne Abstract This article explores how Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore translated the strategies of their artistic practice and pre-war involvement with the Surrealists and revolutionary politics into an ingenious counter-propaganda campaign against the German Occupation. Unlike some of their contemporaries such as Tristan Tzara and Louis Aragon who embraced Communist orthodoxy, the women refused to relinquish the radical relativism of their approach to gender, meaning and identity in resisting totalitarianism. Their campaign built on Cahun’s theorization of the concept of ‘indirect action’ in her 1934 essay, Place your Bets (Les paris sont ouvert), which defended surrealism in opposition to both the instrumentalization of art and myths of transcendence. An examination of Cahun’s post-war letters and the extant leaflets the women distributed in Jersey reveal how they appropriated and inverted Nazi discourse to promote defeatism through carnivalesque montage, black humour and the ludic voice of their adopted persona, the ‘Soldier without a Name.’ It is far from my intention to reproach those who left France at the time of the Occupation. But one must point out that Surrealism was entirely absent from the preoccupations of those who remained because it was no help whatsoever on an emotional or practical level in their struggles against the Nazis.1 Former dadaist and surrealist and close collaborator of André Breton, Tristan Tzara thus dismisses the idea that surrealism had any value in opposing Nazi domination.

For many surrealist artists, painting and sculpture shared the same nature as prose and poetry, in the way they revealed the deepest emotions and psychological processes. One of the major artists was Joan Miró, whose works in the 1920s exemplified this blurring of the boundaries between drawing and writing and between the visual and the poetic. boration when developing his works from this period, primarily due to the rewarding contact he maintained in prior years with visual poetry, which supported his convic- tions that painting is not easily distinguis- hable from poetry and that his own work could even include poetic words and phra- ses. Similarly to Breton and Soupault, Miró makes his viewers aware that all repre- sentation is nothing more than a form of language, and he shows the mechanisms for which this comes about on his canva- ses. With thanks to my supervisors Dr David Sorfa and Dr Lydia Papadimitriou for their support during the process of writing this thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis examines the films of Humphrey Jennings, exploring his work in relation to surrealism. This examination provides an overview of how surrealism’s set of ideas is manifest in Jennings’s documentary film work. The thesis does not assert that his films are surrealist texts or that there is such a thing as a surrealist film; rather it explores how his films, produced in Britain in the period from 1936 to 1950, have a dialectical relationship with surrealism. The thesis first considers Jennings’s work in relation to documentary theory, outlining how and why he is considered a significant filmmaker in the documentary field. It then goes on to consider Jennings’s engagement with surrealism in Britain in the years prior to World War Two. The thesis identifies three paradoxes relating to surrealism in Britain, using these to explore surrealism as an aura that can be read in the films of Jennings. The thesis explores three active phases of Jennings’s film work, each phase culminating in a key film. It acknowledges that Spare Time (1939) and Listen to Britain (1942) are key films in Jennings’s oeuvre, examining these two films and then emphasising the importance of a third, previously generally overlooked, film, The Silent Village (1943).

    Surrealism, Occultism and Politics This volume examines the relationship between occultism and Surrealism, specif- ically exploring the reception and appropriation of occult thought, motifs, tropes and techniques by surrealist artists and writers in Europe and the Americas from the 1920s through the 1960s. Its central focus is the specific use of occultism as a site of political and social resistance, ideological contestation, subversion and revolution. Additional focus is placed on the ways occultism was implicated in surrealist dis- courses on identity, gender, sexuality, utopianism and radicalism. Dr. Tessel M. Bauduin is a Postdoctoral Research Associate and Lecturer at the Uni- versity of Amsterdam. Dr. Victoria Ferentinou is an Assistant Professor at the University of Ioannina.
