DAY OF PINK

April 9th, 2014 was Day of Pink, an International Day against bullying and discrimination, and Kildonan- East Collegiate filled the school day with activities to promote the theme of “RESPECT.”

Aretha Franklin's “RESPECT” was pumped through the PA system as students were entering the building. Ballots were handed out throughout the day for students standing up for respect by wearing pink or students doing a respectful act. These ballots were used for draws made at the end of each class. “Pink Stands for Respect” t-shirts were handed out as prizes.

Students wrote on beautiful art paper how they would stand for respect and signed them. These pieces of paper were used to create a mural, along with the photos taken by photography students of students and staff wearing pink throughout the day. Also in the mural are pieces of pink paper shaped into the letters spelling the word “RESPECT.” The mural is now hanging in the windows of the school library. Spring/Summer Edition Page 6

. LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM

This year, we had a few guests come in to work with our Aboriginal students, from soapstone carving with Michael Many Eagles (local artist) to our drumming and sharing circles with Lisa Amyot Hunter (Aboriginal Community Network). These activities allowed our Aboriginal students the chance to share some of their heritage and culture with their peers. Best Buddies was a new program that was started at the end of last year which paired mainstream students with a student who has a cognitive disability. All of our students in the Life Skills program were partnered up with a Peer Buddy. We started the year off with a bowling party, did some fundraising at Halloween by making candy kabobs and selling them at lunch time and ended the year with our Peer Buddies (who are also graduating this year) organizing a limo ride for them and their Buddies from the Life Skills program. Many friendships were developed this year with Buddies from the Life Skills program and their Peer Buddies. We look forward to these friendships continuing on to next year and hopefully even beyond their high school years.

There were many highlights this year within the Life Skills area. Our class had their first pets, two frogs named Kermit and Rocky. Students followed the Winter Olympics and Para Olympics in homeroom each morning. After the Olympics, students researched a participating country within the Olympics and learned about their culture, geography, Olympic standings and so much more. On April 10, 2014, students were able to share the information they learned from this project with their peers, family and community members at our International Fair. Many of our students this year were integrated into mainstream classes with their peers as they learned culinary and art techniques, welding and autobody skills as well as history and geography. These opportunities provided the students in the Life Skills area to learn with and from their peers and experience the joy of lifelong learning.

Many events happened over the year at which our students were able to showcase their talent and share their love for music with others. The students in the Life Skills program performed at the school wide Winter Concert, Showcase of Excellence, school wide Spring Concert and school wide Guitar Showcase. Our Music Therapist, Allison Shiach continued to provide our students with individualized and group music therapy sessions throughout the year. The highlight of each year is at our Life Skills Spring Music Concert. This year‘s theme was ―Happiness is….‖ Students performed their favorite musical selections as they spread joy and happiness to all who were there. It was an evening filled with music, talent and happiness. Spring/Summer Edition Page 7

LIFE SKILLS

We are very proud of our four graduates and the work they have accomplished while in the Life Skills program at Kildonan-East Collegiate. On June 5th, 2014 we held our annual Grad Tea event in the school‘s library, where we acknowledged all of their accomplishments and bid them farewell. Congratulations to Jessika Caipe Romo, Lindsay McKay, Raine Papassay and AllieTeneycke for their dedication and hard work throughout the years. We wish them success as they begin a new path into adulthood.

Art and Photography students displayed their finest pieces of work for a stunning art show. Staff and students were invited to view their pieces during the day. Artist and photographers invited family and friends in the evening. Comments were all extremely positive and many were amazed at the quality of the work. Spring/Summer Edition Page 8 English Department Notes

We are gearing up for exams and final projects and are excited to see those last assignments coming in from our students! Ms. English‘s grade 9 class has been writing some ―old school‖ pen pal letters back and forth to students in China who are studying the Manitoba curriculum there. These students attend Yang Guang Qing School which is located in northern Beijing. We have learned about their favourite foods, xtra-curricular activities and boy- friend/girlfriend issues as well!

In Ms. English‘s recent slam poetry unit, Jessie Posthumus (gr. 9) wrote the following poem based on A. Mojgani‘s— ‗Shake the Dust‖ This is for all the dead beat workers working dead end jobs living in dead end homes with their sad and crappy lives. For the dads whose kids only love them for the money they get from them to spend. For the wives who cheat on their husbands because their husbands don‘t love them anymore. Shake the dust! This is for the fallen souls of enemy sides who are never seen through our eyes. For the ones who think that they can‘t just because they were told so. For those who stopped listening because all they were hearing was hurt. For the ones who hate themselves because they are hated by others. Shake the dust! This is for the people on the street who can‘t eat a warm meal and are forced to steal to stay alive. For the ones who are pointed at by little children who think they look different and for their little children pointing their fingers because they think that everyone should be the same. Shake the dust! For the men and women who have lost everything to disaster but have kept happy. For their families even though they‘re dead inside. For the man with the gun in his mouth because his girl has gone for another. Shake the dust! And finally this is for you whoever you are, wherever you‘re from: don‘t hurt. Life‘s good. If you think that there‘s nothing for you, that you would rather it all be over, then do this one last thing: throw your hand to your chest and take a moment. Feel that purpose. Everyone is here for a reason. You just need to find yours. SHAKE THE DUST!!

THE FAULT IN OUR STARS — Book Review by Ms. Murrays‘ student Kaitlyn Shupenia John Green is the American author, online educational video creator, video blogger and the genius behind the ever-popular teen fiction novel, The Fault in Our Stars. Although it follows a girl affected by thyroid cancer, this novel was not written to focus on the sickness, but rather on the notion that people who live with sickness are just as capable as healthy people of feeling happiness in the little things, friendship and the thrill of falling in love with someone. The story takes place in Indianapolis and is narrated by sixteen-year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster who has cancer. Hazel Grace is a clear realist and when her parents force her to attend a cancer kid support group, she tries painfully hard to be a nobody. Being a nobody becomes hard when she meets her plot twist, Augustus Waters, who used to have cancer and is now an amputee (and awfully gorgeous). Hazel‘s whole outlook on life is about to be rearranged as she gets to know who this guy really is, and falls victim to love. Spring/Summer Edition Page 9

Greetings from the KEC Library…. Another very busy year has come and is about to be gone in the library. We had almost 500 new arrivals with many exciting new titles. We had students regularly come in to work on school work, play cards and games, do puzzles or just come in to visit.

The library is busy with year-end business and we are currently in the process of inventory. Thank you to all the students and staff who have returned items from the library; this really makes the process go smoothly. If you still have items out, please return them ASAP as all items were due May 30th.

We are also in the process of issuing lost fine letters for any items currently out. We would really like to have the item(s) back so if you know where your missing item is, just return it to the library and your fine will be resolved. Any items not returned are marked as lost and fines of replacement cost are implemented.

We wish everyone a fun, restful and safe holiday and look forward to another busy year in the fall. Stop by to check out the exciting new titles.

PHOTOGRAPHY

We had a very busy fourth term up in our photography studio, as well as exploring and capturing the beauty of Winnipeg and surrounding scenery. Students had the opportunity to work with dry ice; it was an exciting day, filled with great effects, excellent end results and a bit of science too. We recently invited families from our Healthy Baby Program to have their children photographed. Photography students quickly learned that as sweet and adorable as these young clients are, at times it is extremely challenging. Toddlers are on the move, and babies can get fussy which made this assignment a great learning experience. The photography students were up for the challenge and enjoyed their experience. Students went back in time to work with 35mm film cameras. They now have a new appreciation for photographers who use/used film – it is inspiring to know all the requirements needed. Students loaded the film, set their cameras properly, removed the film from its canister without light and placed it on a reel, processed their film and developed their prints. Some needed to re-shoot, finding out after they processed the film. Frustration set in and at the same time so did an appreciation. Even though the sun didn‘t set until 9:33pm photography students met at 8:00pm one evening to capture some night photography. It was a beautiful evening spent experimenting with settings to get some very interesting shots. Photography collaborated with several other programs - graphics, music, hairstyling, drama, art, pastry and culinary to experience a mock wedding. It was wonderful to see students working in their area of expertise to showcase their abilities and talents. Visit our blog to see our special day. www.kecphotographytwo.blogspot.com We also were sent on assignment visiting the Legislative Building, Zoo and Conservatory, Exchange District and Bird's Hill Park.

Another great year was had by all in the photography program and are we looking forward to new collaboration with various programs in our building and community. Spring/Summer Edition Page 12

Triple A—Aboriginal Academic Achievement Grant

On May 13th, 40 students in Grades 9 and 10 attended with the support of the Triple A, Aboriginal Academic Achievement Grant. The weather cooperated with light rain and there was not a snowflake in sight. Everyone‘s spirits were high as students actively participated outdoors in the following three activities: Bannock Bake, Aboriginal Games and the Life of the Tee Pee. In the first activity, cinnamon with brown sugar baked into bannock on a stick was a big hit along with warming up around the fire pit. In the second activity, the game Sack Ball, played with sticks roughly 4 feet in length and with two balls attached to one another by a cloth was a crowd favorite. Lastly, learning about the Life of the Tee Pee was quite amazing. The amount of work it must have taken to put up thirteen poles and tie them together in order to provide shelter was somewhat mind- boggling. In order to tie the poles together one person was designated the ‗Runner‘ who, with a long tether, ran clockwise around the poles each time a new one was added until the 13th pole was tied on. Truly this was a fantastic outing with an outstanding group of students! Thank you everyone and to the wonderful staff at Oak Hammock Marsh. The teachers, Mr. Hawkins, Ms. Weisshaar and Ms.Barker, cannot wait until our next outing in the upcoming school year! Spring/Summer Edition Page 13

NOPIMING PROVINCIAL PARK In the month of June, 12 students and staff spent 4 wonderful days in Nopiming provincial park. The students were treated to absolutely beautiful weather for paddling and angling. Several large walleye, northern, and small mouth bass were caught. The students had the opportunity to paddle Shoe lake, Tulibee lake and the Winnipeg river. The trip was part of KEC's outdoor education program. Spring/Summer Edition Page 14

KEC BioMed Students in the Community‘s Service -

Two of the unique features of the BioMed program get the students involved with organizations in our community that provide health care services. The “Partner Project” is an opportunity for the small groups of BioMed students to receive, collate, organize and analyze real data provided by a health organization, and to deliver a presentation and paper to their partner summarizing their results and recommendations. The BioMed “Internship” allows students to spend about 100 hours working in a health occupation, experiencing the daily challenges of the profession. This year in the Partner Projects, groups of BioMed students worked closely with medical clinics, seniors’ care homes, hospitals and health and fitness facilities. After the student presentations and papers were delivered, the community partners were asked to comment on their experience with the students. The comments received were very flattering and included these statements: “The students did an excellent job completing the project … the report and presentation the students provided were very professional and clear.” “The spreadsheet provided (by the students) will be a meaningful tool for our use.” “The materials (prepared by the students) are very useful and have already been sent to one of our funders as part of a larger evaluation process.” “I would gladly recruit young professionals like these.” “The students demonstrated a clear grasp of the implications of the results (of the analysis).”

“I was impressed with (the students’) willingness and ability to engage with me as an older person … they were respectful but unafraid to express their view or to question.” When the BioMed students were surveyed to identify the lessons they learned from their “Partner Project” experience, they said that they learned a lot about time management, team work, professionalism, responsibility and communication. All of these life lessons will continue to pay dividends as they complete their final year in high school and make plans for further education, training and experience. The BioMed students are now busily engaged with their Internships, spending their afternoons working in health occupations ranging from cancer research to athletic therapy. Whether the students are working with pediatricians, nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, opticians or chiropractors, they are applying their skills to improve the health, fitness and happiness of members of our community. The students are experiencing the important roles played by many professionals in our city, as they make tentative decisions about their own futures. KEC BioMed students in the community’s service! GREEN TEAM EARTH DAY

In anticipation of Earth Day, KEC’s Green Team held a lunch hour educational/motivational campaign that saw hundreds of staff and students pledge to 'Act for the Planet'. A wide variety of educational information was on hand, from displays to app downloads. This year's success ensures the event will be back bigger and better than ever next year.

Page 18 Spring/Summer Edition Carpentry 2013/2014

It has been quite a year in the Carpentry shop this year. Here are some of the highlights as most of the year is now behind us. For the first time we ran grade 9 classes in our shop and the students did very well as a whole. The grade 11‟s have been enjoying the sunshine as they continue to build the sheds that had to shart in chilly weather. The grade 12‟s are currently all out on work experience placements that range from house framing to deck building to cabinetmaking. This, just after they built a new set of kitchen cabinets including countertops for the staff room and a 16 foot long run of cabinets for the graphic design area. Two grade 12 students represented KE Carpentry at this year‟s Manitoba skills competition. Justin Dranez entered the Carpentry competition while Christian Proulx entered the Cabinetmaking competition and took home a silver medal. Lastly, we will be saying „Good Bye‟ to Mr. Janz after teaching at KEC for 7 years. He is moving to a teaching job at WC Miller Collegiate in Altona, MB, the school and program that he graduated from. We wish him all the best in the future.

Career Bridge Students Gaining Valuable Experience

Career Bridge Students Gaining an Advantage Thirty-five students in grade eleven and twelve have now completed their job and career explorations as part of the Career Bridge Program. Resumes are now being updated with new work skills, experience, and references for future employment. This semester, student work placements include Concordia Hospital, policing, veterinary, pharmacy, auto technology, education, retail, food services, dentistry, dance instruction, automobile parts and service, recreation, and child care. If you are interested in exploring a possible career, developing real-world skills, building a resume, gaining valuable references and contacts, or getting your foot in the door in a local profession, business, or industry (and earn TWO CREDITS in the process!), Career Bridge is for you. If you are planning on entering the Biomedical Internship Program when you reach grade 12, our program can given you a leg up in grade 11 by arranging a resume building experience in a hospital, pharmacy, or other area of interest. Our former students have said that Career Bridge was one of the most important classes or programs that they had enrolled in. If you would like to the same kind of experience, be sure to keep Career Bridge in mind when you register for courses. The program is listed under Career Education on your application form. If you have any questions about the program, or if you would like to discuss what exciting career exploration opportunities await you, come see Mr. Kutka in Career Bridge, room 143, or speak with your teacher advisor who can also register you for this course for next year.
