Pimachiowin Aki is a 29,040 km2 World Heritage Site in eastern Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. The site was inscribed on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List in 2018. The Corporation is a partnership of the Anishinaabe First Nations of Bloodvein River, Little Grand Rapids, Pauingassi and Poplar River, and the governments of Manitoba and Ontario. The Corporation’s Vision Pimachiowin Aki is celebrated for its cultural and natural values, and regarded as a model of sustainability. Pimachiowin Aki is an organization that is recognized as a cross-cultural, community-based leader in World Heritage Site management. Wataynikaneyap Power
Issue 1, November 2019 Wataynikaneyap Power The Environmental Assessment (EA) approvals for Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the Wataynikaneyap Power Project were received in Summer 2019. Since this time, the Project has been following-up with additional technical studies and submitting environmental permits to the appropriate authorities for approval. Most of these permits, including those from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) are in place. The Environmental Team is actively working with identified Aboriginal communities and stakeholders to address Conditions of Approvals (CoA) for these authorizations. A summary of Project activities will be provided to identified Aboriginal communities and government agencies 15-days in advance of any proposed work. This overview will be updated and available on the project website every three months throughout the course of the Project construction. The update will include an outline of Project construction activities that are planned to occur during the following three months, including a list of potential environmental features, considerations and permit applications expected to be submitted. Wataynikaneyap PM and Opiikapawiin Services LP (OSLP) are working together with Aboriginal Communities and qualified contractors to complete several environmental monitoring programs as outlined in the EA. Along with Contractor’s compliance monitoring activities, Wataynikaneyap Power will also conduct audits of Project activities to ensure ongoing compliance with EA and engagement commitments and various other requirements. Results of monitoring activities will be made available through an Annual Compliance Report (ACR) posted to the Wataynikaneyap Environmental Webpage. -

TEACHING KIT Volume 7: The Boreal Forest National Forest Week 2006: September 24 to 30 The Canadian Forestry Association is pleased to announce that after careful consultation and consideration, in 2006 National Forest Week will move from spring to fall. Based on a 100-year legacy of facilitating forest education, the CFA believes this new approach will spur increased year-round learning opportunities for interested Canadians. Trends show that early education is key to capturing and fostering the interest of youth towards volunteerism, higher education and careers in the forest and environmental sectors. Developing the forestry leaders of tomorrow is critical to ensuring sustainability of our natural resources and the socio-economic and health benefits they provide for all Canadians. Integral to this learning process is the Canada's Forests Teaching Kit series, which has become the cornerstone of CFA’s education and outreach initiatives. Available free to educators, these kits provide tools for helping youth better understand the value of forest resources and the importance of using them wisely. Beginning in 2006, the annual kit publication date will change to coin- cide with National Forest Week each September. This is in response to overwhelming feedback from teachers across Canada indicating a strong preference to receive these materials at commencement of the school year for increased and enhanced integration into teaching plans and other outreach activities. In keeping with tradition, I invite you to join the CFA in celebrating Canada’s forests — in September and year-round: plant a tree, walk through a forest or learn about forest management. Your local forestry association can provide more ideas, teaching materials and information about forest activities in your area.
