PAGE 3 Vedanta Memoirs With Nandu & Lalita Mehta When Nandu Mehta emerged into the world he was already surrounded by the peaceful and vibrant per- sonalities and activities of the Ramakrishna Move- ment. His parents were among the closest devotees of the Ramakrishna Movement in Mumbai. The young Nandu spent many a weekend at the Mumbai Ash- rama with its library, hospital and temple and lecture hall, bustling with householders and monastics. “I was baptised and steeped into the Movement from childhood,” Nandu observed, during the annual Vedanta Memoirs session, a feature of our Guru Purn- ima Celebration held on Sunday, July 29, at Vedanta Initiation day for Nandu Mehta’s father (back row, Hall. Nandu’s father was initiated by Swami Shivananda, second from left with cap), 30 December, 1926, by disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. Swami Shivananda. When she married into the Mehta family, his wife Lalita also entered into the Ramakrishna Movement world. Both received initiation from Swami Vireswa- rananda, a legendary monk of the Ramakrishna Or- der, President for over 20 years and disciple of Holy Mother. The initiation was fittingly held in the small temple of Holy Mother at the Mumbai ashrama, one of only two temples (the other being at Jayramabati, birth- place of Holy Mother) “wherein Holy Mother is wor- shipped in an idol.” Swami Akhandananda, direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna had even installed some The ‘Universal Temple’ at the Ramakrishna Mission relics of the Holy Mother there in 1934. in Mumbai and the statue of Holy Mother. The Mehta family had a long association with another legendary monk of the Ramakrishna Order and former President, Swa- mi Ranganathananda, well-known to many of us from his annual visits to Australia during his world lecture tours in the 1970s and 80s. Both also shared many happy years with Rev.Pravrajika Ajayaprana Mataji here in Sydney. They fondly recalled the weekends that Mataji stayed with them when the nunnery was being relocated to the current building in Burwood Heights. It was a special opportunity to discuss spiritual matters with her including the following bits of wisdom. Wise advice—Rev.Pravrajika Ajayaprana Vice-President, Sri Sarada Math & Rmakrishna Sarada Mission • Series of dots: Failure to do continuous remembrance [of God] or japa is not an unforgivable omission. When you see a series of dotted lines from a distance, they ap- pear not as dots but connected, just like a dot matrix printout. • Camera: There may be undesirable things around us, but we don’t have to register them in our mind. Be like a camera that is being moved around, but until you click the button, no impression is recorded on the film. • Don’t let maya fool you: Just as when you are driving on a hot day, and in the distance you can see a mirage or illusion of water, you tell yourself not to be fooled by it and that what you are seeing is not true. Similarly keep a look out for the other illusions of maya. PAGE 4 VEDANTA NEWS And anger’s a particularly ‘Through the senses, anger sneaky creature. Swami Prabuddhanandaji and myself met for the first time at the Belur Math in the year 1956 where both of us had come to receive our Brahmacharya-diksha—he from Bangalore and me from Bombay. Since then we had close connection with each other. We met again at the Belur Math in the year 1960 where we came for our Sannyasa-diksha from Most Revered Swami Sankaranandaji Maharaj. I admired his balanced approach to everything that had kept the San Francisco centre vibrant. In 2000 A.D. he had invited me to San Francisco to attend the Centenary Celebrations of the San Francisco centre. He took me also to Olema and other retreats on the occasion. Once he came just on a visit to meet the old Swami at the Belur Math. In sum, Swami Prabuddhanandaji was an asset to our Order, and his leaving us is a great loss.

  • Ramakrishna: a Model of Historical Renewal Through Incarnational Consciousness and Role Playing
Ramakrishna: A Model Of Historical Renewal Through Incarnational Consciousness And Role Playing Hal French University Of South Carolina Introduction How does a tradition such as Hinduism renew itself in the face of frontal challenges by a Westernizing presence? Nineteenth Century India was replete with all the formidable elements that the British Raj presented—challenges to national, cultural and spiritual identities of the people of India. Were the traditions of Hinduism now to be regarded as outmoded, incapable of meeting the needs of modem India? This paper will explore how the personal model of one man was profoundly influential in renewing the vitality of Hinduism for many, with particular reference to his contacts with the Brahmo Samaj. Ramakrishna (1836-1886) seemed, by his incarnational consciousness and role-playing activity, to revivify the life force of the deities. Yet, as has been noted, "If one takes into consideration Ramakrishna's life only up to 1875 or so, when He first came into contact with modem Bengal, it is difficult to place him in any particular age: he seems so immune from any contemporary influences."1 At that time, his sadhana complete, it seems particularly auspicious that his meeting with Keshub Chander Sen should have occurred, for by that relationship the circle of his influence began to expand. Still, one gains the strong impression that this was not his conscious intent. If he stands, to 21st century observers, as having crystallized in his life the verities of protean Hinduism in the 19th century, he did not seem to do so strategically. He followed his own spiritual inclinations without design, apparently quite without ambition to establish institutional patterns and directives.

  • Spiritual Conversations with Swami Shankarananda Swami Tejasananda English Translation by Swami Satyapriyananda (Continued from the Previous Issue)
2 THE ROAD TO WISDOM Swami Vivekananda on Significance of Symbols—III n the heart of all these ritualisms, there Istands one idea prominent above all the rest—the worship of a name. Those of you who have studied the older forms of Christianity, those of you who have studied the other religions of the world, perhaps have marked that there is this idea with them all, the worship of a name. A name is said to be very sacred. In the Bible we read that the holy name of God was considered sacred beyond compare, holy consciously or unconsciously, man found beyond everything. It was the holiest of all the glory of names. names, and it was thought that this very Again, we find that in many different Word was God. This is quite true. What is religions, holy personages have been this universe but name and form? Can you worshipped. They worship Krishna, they think without words? Word and thought worship Buddha, they worship Jesus, and so are inseparable. Try if anyone of you can forth. Then, there is the worship of saints; separate them. Whenever you think, you hundreds of them have been worshipped all are doing so through word forms. The one over the world, and why not? The vibration brings the other; thought brings the word, of light is everywhere. The owl sees it in the and the word brings the thought. Thus the dark. That shows it is there, though man whole universe is, as it were, the external cannot see it. To man, that vibration is only symbol of God, and behind that stands visible in the lamp, in the sun, in the moon, His grand name.

Government of India Honours YSS by Releasing a Commemorative Postage Stamp For a YSS devotee, March 7 is associated with several sacred events that are close to his heart. Sixty-ve years ago, on this very day in 1952, Paramahansa Yogananda had entered Mahasamadhi, speaking of God and his beloved India. In 1977, the Government of India had honoured Guruji by releasing a commemorative stamp on this day, thus formally recognizing his tremendous contributions to the spiritual wealth of the world. And this year on March 7, the Prime Minister of India, Sri Narendra Modi, paid a tting tribute to the organization founded by the Premavatar by re- leasing a commemorative stamp in honour of Yogoda Satsanga Society of India at a special cer- emony held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Over 1,800 YSS dev- otees attended the programme. Several monks from YSS including the Board of Directors participated in this historic event. e Prime Minister was cordially greeted by Swamis Vishwananda and Smaranananda at the entrance and escorted to the hall. e pro- gramme began with the Prime Minister, Sri Narendra Modi, along with the YSS Board of Directors, lighting the lamp. Swami Vishwananda wel- comed the Prime Minister by presenting him with a bouquet of owers, and Swami Smaranananda presented a shawl to the esteemed guest as a mark of honour. Swami Smaranananda began his address by quoting a shloka from the Bhagavad Gita which states that in every yuga, avatars come to protect vir- tue and destroy evil. However, Swamiji added that there are some avatars 64 Y S whose mission is to help devotees annihilate the demons of maya within; and that our beloved Gurudeva was one such avatar who came to guide deluded humanity towards divine wisdom.

  • Swami Tyagishananda: Master Renunciate
Swami Tyagishananda: Master Renunciate By Vinayak Lohani Swami Tyagishananda was a sterling Sanyasin of the Ramakrishna Order and had a deep influence on many other future monks and spiritual aspirants who came in touch with him. In his life he combined the Karma, Bhakti, and Jnana in a way that was exemplary to other monks and spiritual practitioners. He was founder of the Thrissur Ashrama of the Ramakrishna Math and also spent a long time at the Bangalore Ashrama guiding younger monks and brahmacharins. Many young men joined the Ramakrishna Order inspired by him and under his mentorship. Early Life Tyagishanandaji’s pre-monastic name was V.K. Krishnan Menon and was born in the aristocratic Vadakke Kuruppam family in 1891. His family was socially very distinguished, and the Cochin Royal family had several nuptial ties with them. He did his schooling from Thrissur and thereafter completed intermediate in Sanskrit from what is now called Maharaja’s College at Ernakulum, which founded in 1875 and affiliated to the Madras University, was one of the oldest colleges in Southern India. He topped the whole University in this examination. 1 Thereafter he went to the renowned Presidency College Madras for his B.A., and thereafter M.A., in Sanskrit, where he was again the Gold Medalist. The Presidency College Madras, one of two of Presidency Colleges set up by the British (the other being in Kolkata), had a glorious history with a galaxy of distinguished alumni and faculty including the four ‘Bharat Ratnas’ – Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, C. Rajagopalachari, C.V. Raman, C.
