Unique theme and objectives Since 2011, WHO has been collaborating with the World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA) – an umbrella civil society organization representing patient alliances – to coordinate the annual campaign for World Hepatitis Day. This year, we have agreed to commemorate the World Hepatitis Day under a joint theme: "Eliminate hepatitis". The 7th World Hepatitis Day on 28 July 2017 provides a historic opportunity to campaign to "Eliminate hepatitis", as envisioned in WHO's first “Global health sector strategy on viral hepatitis 2016–2021”, and included as the final target for hepatitis in the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030. Activities and awareness around World Hepatitis Day are designed to: build and leverage political engagement, following official endorsement of the global health sector strategy on viral hepatitis at the World Health Assembly 2016; showcase emerging national responses in high-burden countries; encourage actions by individuals and the public; and highlight the need for a greater global response as outlined in WHO's “Global hepatitis report, 2017”.     CALL TO ACTION TO SCALE UP GLOBAL HEPATITIS RESPONSE GLOBAL PARTNERS’ MEETING ON HEPATITIS (Convened by WHO in MarchC 2014 in Geneva) Background Viral hepatitis is now responsible for 1.4 million deaths every year (compared with 1.6 million deaths from HIV/AIDS, 1.3 million from tuberculosis and 0.6 million from malaria). Approximately, 500 million people are currently living with viral hepatitis and some 2 billion have been infected with hepatitis B virus. Most people with chronic hepatitis B or C are unaware of their infection and are at serious risk of developing cirrhosis or liver cancer, contributing to global increases in both of these chronic diseases. Millions of acute infections with hepatitis A virus and hepatitis E virus occur annually and result in tens of thousands of deaths almost exclusively in lower and middle-income countries. Hepatitis C is not preventable by vaccination, however, current treatment regimens offer high cure rates, which are expected to further improve with newer medicines. Such treatments must be made accessible to people who need them at affordable prices. Hepatitis B is preventable with a safe and effective vaccine, however, there are 240 million people living with chronic hepatitis B infection and available effective therapies could prevent cirrhosis and liver cancer among many of those infected. Preventive measures are not universally implemented, and equitable access to and availability of quality, effective, affordable and safe diagnostics and treatments for hepatitis B and C are lacking in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries. The WHO Global Partners’ Meeting on HepatitisC united stakeholders as a global platform for better communication and collaboration to support a public-health, rights-based approach to viral hepatitis.

Introduction World Immunization Week is a global public health campaign to raise awareness and increase rates of immunization against vaccine-preventable diseases around the world. It takes place each year during last week of April. World Immunization Week sprung out of the efforts taking place across different countries and regions for a week-long immunization awareness commemoration. The event is one of eight official campaigns marked by the WHO, along with World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Tuberculosis Day, World Malaria Day, World Hepatitis Day and World AIDS Day World Immunization Week aims to promote one of the world's most powerful tools for health i.e. the use of vaccines to protect, or "immunize", people of all ages against disease. Activities conducted during this day include vaccination campaigns, trainings and workshops, round-table discussions, public information campaigns, and more. The Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), launched by the World Health Organization in 1974, originally containing vaccines to protect against 6 major diseases: tuberculosis, polio, measles, diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus. Since then, the EPI programme has reached into every country in the world and has expanded to include other life-saving vaccines.

Viral hepatitis is a major cause of liver cancer and cirrhosis in the United States, leading to approximately 18,000 American deaths every year. Outcomes can significantly improve with treatment, but because viral hepatitis can be present without symp- toms for decades, most infected Americans do not know they have it. Today, we raise awareness about preventing and treating viral hepatitis, and we renew our commitment to combat this disease in all its forms. Public awareness is key to halting the spread of viral hepatitis. All types of this disease pose serious health threats, and both hepatitis B and C can become chronic infections that lead to liver cancer and liver disease.
