WTJ Westminster Theological Journal ix CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Introduction Subject and Research Question The Epistle to the Hebrews has been noted as one of the most intricate documents of the NT. The author artistically employs a multiplicity of well-known images and ideas which resonate with his audience while simultaneously exemplifying Christ as the paragon of these images. The provenance of these images which appear in Hebrews has long been a subject of scholarship. The most prevalent proposed backgrounds in scholarship have been Judaism, Hellenism, Gnosticism and various combinations thereof (with ancient authors such as Philo being dominant in most cases). Additionally, the sources discovered at Qumran aid in the study of figures such as Melchizedek. The author of Hebrews presents a portrait of Christ that places him in relation to other figures known to his audience. The author places Christ alongside those characters and uses them to convey his intricate Christology. The author of Hebrews, however, artistically utilizes references to archetypes and ideas commonly known to his audience without fully explaining or justifying his use of them. By placing Christ in the context of these ideas, the author uses these familiar concepts to show Christ’s superiority. For example, the author fills the epistle with 1 2 references to foundational figures in Jewish history1, cultic practices2, and themes3 that would be most significant to an audience familiar with those references. In every context, the author portrays Christ as the figure who supersedes and/or embodies the greatest fulfillment of the precedent referred to. In a more subtle example, the author utilizes athletic terminology in 12:1–3 that most suitably would have significance to an audience familiar with athletic terminology used in a Greco-Roman stadium.4 In this athletic context, Jesus is portrayed as both the "objective" and "standard" for "endurance" (12:1–2). The author intentionally builds upon the foundations of commonly known references such as these to display a multi-faceted portrayal of Christ. This dissertation will investigate how the author of Hebrews places Christ in the context of Greco-Roman heroic references to portray Christ's superiority over all other heroes. The author uses heroic language and imagery that the audience would have understood to be parallel to the figures, legends, and themes of Hellenistic heroes that were incorporated into Roman mythology. The author uses these heroic references to elucidate the Christology of the epistle and to relate his portrayal of the heroic Christ to the audience.

Had the Chemistry Department refused to accept Henry Eyring as a full professor, he probably would have been accepted by the Metallurgy Department, where he had a courtesy faculty appointment for many years. Milton created a story of Christ’s elevation prior to the creation of man. Ephrem, on the other hand, moved the story to Holy Saturday. Christ is prophesied, witnessed, predicted, typified, and prefigured; but apart from a few alleged christophanic appearances, he is largely the subject of another, historically subsequent Testament. This thesis surveys the christological approaches to the Old Testament since the early 20th century breach made within historicism, introduces a patristic mindset, proposes an ontological foundation to a sacramental (real-presence) approach, then demonstrates this through a reading of Zechariah 9-14. The goal is to bring together three arenas of study—exegetical, historical, theological—and demonstrate how their united lens clarifies the substantial referent of Scripture, namely Christ. The character of the OT witness is thus presented in christological terms, suggesting a reading that recognizes the divine person within the text itself, at home in the sensus literalis. By way of analogy to the Cyrillian hypostatic union and a Lutheran eucharistic comprehension, the task is to show how one encounters the hypostasis of Christ by means of the text’s literal sense.

These works and the people involved in their creation were part of a widespread culture of sentiment. This term encompasses the philosophers who praised an innate “moral sense,” the novelists who aimed to train morality by reducing audiences to tears, and the playwrights who sought (as Colley Cibber put it) to promote “the Interest and Honour of Virtue.” The oratorio, with its English libretti, moralizing lessons, and music that exerted profound effects on the sensibility of the British public, was the ideal vehicle for writers of sentimental persuasions. My dissertation explores how the pervasive sentimentalism in England, reaching first maturity right when Handel committed himself to the oratorio, influenced his last masterpieces as much as it did other artistic products of the mid- eighteenth century. When searching for relationships between music and sentimentalism, historians have logically started with literary influences, from direct transferences, such as operatic settings of Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, to indirect ones, such as the model that the Pamela character served for the Ninas, Cecchinas, and other garden girls of late eighteenth-century opera.

Not a lot is known about his life but a recent publication by E. Lebon (see lit.) has shed some light on his career. Born into a family of metal workers, Carbonneaux is known to be active as a founder from 1814. In 1819 at the request of the celebrated sculptor François-Joseph Bosio (1768-1845) he received the prestigious commission to execute the equestrian statue of Louis XIV for the Place des Victoires, Paris, which was unveiled in 1822. Carbonneaux cast the statue and the two men worked together at least one more time since he also executed in bronze Bosio’s large group of Hercules fighting Achelous transformed into a snake, a statue commissioned by the French royal household in 1822, exhibited at the Salon of 1824 and now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris. Clearly recognised as being an excellent founder, Carbonneaux was also selected by the Polish-French count Leon Potocki in 1821 to cast the equestrian portrait of the polish statesman and general Josef Poniatowski by Berthel Thorvaldsen1.

The article deals with an image of the heroic self in Seneca’s Hercules as well as with maternal images (Alcmena, Juno and Megara), using psychoanalytic methodology involving identification of complementary self-object relationships. Hercules’ self seems to be construed mainly in an omnipotent, narcissistic fashion, whereas the three images of mothers reflect show the interaction between love and aggression in the play. March 2016 Copyright © 2016 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved Stellenbosch University https://scholar.sun.ac.za Abstract This thesis is an examination of the portrayals of the Ancient Greek mythological hero Heracles in two fifth century BCE tragic plays: The Trachiniae by Sophocles, and the Heracles by Euripides. Based on existing research that was examined, this thesis echoes the claim made by several sources that there is a conceptual link between both these plays in terms of how they treat Heracles as a character on stage. Fundamentally, this claim is that these two plays portray Heracles as a suffering, tragic figure in a way that other theatre portrayals of him up until the fifth century BCE had failed to do in such a notable manner. This thesis links this claim with a another point raised in modern scholarship: specifically, that Heracles‟ character and development as a mythical hero in the Ancient Greek world had given him a distinct position as a demi-god, and this in turn affected how he was approached as a character on stage.
