The Faces of History. the Imagined Portraits of the Merovingian Kings at Versailles (1837-1842)
The faces of history. The imagined portraits of the Merovingian kings at Versailles (1837-1842) Margot Renard, University of Grenoble ‘One would expect people to remember the past and imagine the future. But in fact, when discoursing or writing about history, they imagine it in terms of their own experience, and when trying to gauge the future they cite supposed analogies from the past; till, by a double process of repeti- tion, they imagine the past and remember the future’. (Namier 1942, 70) The historian Christian Amalvi observes that during the first half of the nine- teenth century, most of the time history books presented a ‘succession of dyn- asties (Merovingians, Carolingians, Capetians), an endless row of reigns put end to end (those of the ‘rois fainéants’1 and of the last Carolingians especially), without any hierarchy, as a succession of fanciful portraits of monarchs, almost interchangeable’ (Amalvi 2006, 57). The Merovingian kings’ portraits, exhib- ited in the Museum of French History at the palace of Versailles, could be de- scribed similarly: they represent a succession of kings ‘put end to end’, with imagined ‘fanciful’ appearances, according to Amalvi. However, this vision dis- regards their significance for early nineteenth-century French society. Replac- ing these portraits in the broader context of contemporary history painting, they appear characteristic of a shift in historical apprehension. The French history painting had slowly drifted away from the great tradition established by Jacques-Louis David’s moralistic and heroic vision of ancient history. The 1820s saw a new formation of the historical genre led by Paul De- laroche's sentimental vision and attention to a realistic vision of history, restored to picturesqueness. -

1 the Ancien Régime
Cambridge University Press 978-1-108-49745-9 — Revolutionary France's War of Conquest in the Rhineland Jordan R. Hayworth Excerpt More Information 1 The Ancien Régime To have somewhere to live is to begin to exist. France had frontiers and a place to live even before it formally existed. These frontiers, inherited, conquered, or reconquered, marked out an enormous area if it is mea- sured, as it should be, by the slow pace of communications in the past. In this respect, France was for a long time a “monster,” a “continent” in itself, a super-state, an over-sized political unit, not unlike an empire, uniting regions which were consequently hard to hold together and which had to be defended both against threats from within and, no less, from external dangers. The whole enterprise required an unbelie- vable outlay of strength, patience and vigilance. Fernand Braudel, The Identity of France1 For French nationalist historians like Henri Martin, history showed the unity of “the new France, the old France, and ancient Gaul.” Reflecting his early nineteenth-century and romantic mentality, Martin even described these historical Frances as “the same moral person.”2 Identifying France as Gaul had profound implications. In The Gallic War, Julius Caesar defined the boundaries of ancient Gaul as the Rhine, the Pyrenees, and the Alps.3 The ancient world’s most prominent geo- grapher, a Greek scholar named Strabo of Amasia, approved of Caesar’s assertion in a work that solidified the idea of the Gallic frontiers as permanent locations marked out by clear geographical features, most notably the Rhine.4 The statements by Caesar and Strabo, removed from their appropriate contexts, provided fodder for much subsequent mythmaking. -
PAUL D^Roulfede, REVANCHIST by EDWARD LEAVELL BYRD
c/ PAUL D^ROULfeDE, REVANCHIST by EDWARD LEAVELL BYRD, JR., B.A., M.A. A DISSERTATION IN HISTORY Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of Texas Tech University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Approved Accepted December, 1969 ^l^C'lll** IU9 FOREWORD This study of the life of Paul D^roulede developed from a realization that his career had importance both within the setting of his time and as a precursor of twentieth century right-wing nationalist movements. Therefore, the major events in D^roul4de's life and his political ideas expressed in his speeches and writings received close scrutiny in an attempt to determine the immediate and long-range sig nificance of his career. The persistent desire to revenge France's defeat by Germany in 1870-71, to reacquire Alsace-Lorraine, and to restore, by means of a strong state headed by a popular executive, the lost glories and prestige of France consumed Deroul^de's energies. He actively sought a change in the governmental structure of the Third Republic and led an abortive coup to obtain that goal in 1899, Both by his methods and his attitudes he foreshadowed later French nation alistic movements. The kind help and encouragement of several persons facilitated the writing of this thesis. Donald N. Brown, professor of history at Southeastern Oklahoma State College, graciously consented to read the initial manuscript; Wade Baskin, Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages, aided in the translation of some difficult French phrases; and Mrs. Mamie Harris, librarian, helpfully procured materials through interlibrary loan. -

New York Governor George Pataki unveiled plans to erect the world’s tallest skyscraper to an expected height of 1,776 feet—a level intended to mark the year America declared its independence. The patriotic tone of this decision was reinforced by the young son of
