The Blue Raiders will be in attendance when the ESPYS are broadcast on ABC, Wednesday, July 13, at 7 p.m. CT. “As a Mayor and Blue Raider alumnus, I couldn’t be more excited about supporting MT Basketball in national recognition for the team’s upset against Michigan State in the NCAA tournament earlier this year,” said Mayor Shane McFarland. “Now we have the opportunity to show our appreciation by voting the amazing game as the ‘Best Upset’ in this year’s ESPY Awards. I encourage all MT fans to go online and vote.” Fans can visit www.goblueraiders.com, the official website of MT Athletics, to locate the link to the ESPY voting or go directly to http://espn.go.com/espys/2016/?voting=bestupset to vote for “No. 15 Mid Tenn beats no. 2 Mich St in NCAA Tourney.” Voting is open until the beginning of the awards show. In one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history, the Blue Raiders were nominated for the Best Upset ESPY Award by ESPN for the 90-81 shocking win over No. 2 seed Michigan State. The Blue Raiders were a No. 15 seed entering the opening round game on March 18 in St. Louis. The amazing upset that opened with a 15-2 run by the Blue Raiders saw all five Middle Tennessee starters score in double-figures. MT never trailed in the game. The ESPY nomination is the first in school history and the first team nomination in Tennessee collegiate athletics. For City News online, visit www.Murfreesborotn.gov. Photo attached caption: 1. That was to be a journalist. I’m still a journalist, but over the past couple of years I’ve added another layer to my work. Now, beyond telling stories, I work with the Aspen Institute to convene leaders, facilitate dialogue, and help my small but rich corner of the world, sports, find the opportunity to tell a new story. Its best story. That is to say, a vision in which there’s room for everyone to participate, and we don’t stop playing at adolescence. Sport for All, Play for Life. I’m inspired by my mother, who grew up poor in post-depression Miami. She picked up one of the few sports offered to girls of that era. She’s now 74 and plays tennis five days a week with women half her age; the game shaves 20 years off her self-concept, infusing her with vitality.
