That was to be a journalist. I’m still a journalist, but over the past couple of years I’ve added another layer to my work. Now, beyond telling stories, I work with the Aspen Institute to convene leaders, facilitate dialogue, and help my small but rich corner of the world, sports, find the opportunity to tell a new story. Its best story. That is to say, a vision in which there’s room for everyone to participate, and we don’t stop playing at adolescence. Sport for All, Play for Life. I’m inspired by my mother, who grew up poor in post-depression Miami. She picked up one of the few sports offered to girls of that era. She’s now 74 and plays tennis five days a week with women half her age; the game shaves 20 years off her self-concept, infusing her with vitality. -
