P a g e | 1 Language Contact in Pomerania: The Case of German, Polish, and Kashubian Nick Znajkowski, New York University Purpose The effects of language contact and language shift are well documented. Lexical items and phonological features are very easily transferred from one language to another and once transferred, rather easily documented. Syntactic features can be less so in both respects, but shifts obviously do occur. The various qualities of these shifts, such as whether they are calques, extensions of a structure present in the modifying language, or the collapsing of some structure in favor the apparent simplicity found in analogous foreign structures, all are indicative of the intensity and the duration of the contact. Additionally, and perhaps this is the most interesting aspect of language shift, they show what is possible in the evolution of language over time, but also what individual speakers in a single generation are capable of concocting. This paper seeks to explore an extremely fascinating and long-standing language contact situation that persists to this day in Northern Poland—that of the Kashubian language with its dominating neighbors: Polish and German. The Kashubians are a Slavic minority group who have historically occupied the area in Northern Poland known today as Pomerania, bordering the Baltic Sea. Their language, Kashubian, is a member of the Slavic branch of Indo-European languages and further belongs to the Pomeranian branch of Lechitic languages, which includes Polish, Silesian, and the extinct Polabian and Slovincian. The situation to be found among the Kashubian people, a people at one point variably bi-, or as is sometimes the case among older folk, even trilingual in Kashubian, P a g e | 2 Polish, and German is a particularly exciting one because of the current vitality of the Kashubian minority culture. -

Przypuszczamy, że był on z pochodzenia Anglosasem, czy Ir landczykiem, nie zaś Niemcem, że pochodzi zapewne z diecezji leo- dyjskiej i że nie mógł mu być obcym kult św. Lamberta z Leodium, który to kult manifestuje się imionami Lamberta, zjawiającymi się w dynastii piastowskiej już koło r. 980. Nie był ten Jordan bisku pem poznańskim, jak to przyjmowano do niedawna, był on bisku pem misyjnym. Terenem wyznaczonym mu do jego pracy kościel nej była prawdopodobnie ziemia Polan, czyli tzw. później Wielko polska, z Gnieznem jako prawdopodobną rezydencją, ośrodkiem centralnym. Ten biskup Jordan zmarł koło r. 982, a jego następcą został teraz niewątpliwy Niemiec, niejaki Unger. Dzięki bystremu spo strzeżeniu znakomitego niemieckiego badacza P. Kehr a, przyjętemu przez polskich historyków (Wł. Abrahama, St. Zakrzewskiego i na stępnych), można przyjąć, że jest ten Unger w r. 991 biskupem, ale równocześnie opatem turyngijskiego opactwa w Memleben. Wy mieniony jest on bowiem w dokumencie z r. 991 jako biskup i opat równocześnie, gdy już w roku następnym 992 jest w Memleben inny opat. Stąd wniosek słuszny, że Unger w ciągu roku 991 na 992 ustą pił z opactwa i pozostał następnie tylko biskupem i to niewątpliwie biskupem w Polsce. Imię bowiem Unger jest wcale rzadkie i trudno by było przyjąć, by mogło być równocześnie dwu biskupów Unge- rów i to żaden z nich nie zasiadający na regularnej katedrze, biskup stwie w Niemczech. Drugim wnioskiem P. Kehra, jednak sądzić wolno, niekoniecznie do przyjęcia, jest to, że stanowisko biskupie po śmierci Jordana, a przed r. -

Histoire de la Pologne 1 Histoire de la Pologne L'histoire de la Pologne commence véritablement au Xe siècle, sous le règne de Mieszko Ier et de la dynastie Piast. C'est sous son règne que les souverains polonais se convertissent au christianisme. La Pologne devient rapidement au Moyen Âge une puissance régionale, tout en essayant régulièrement de sortir de l'influence du Saint-Empire Romain Germanique, et repousser le Drang nach Osten. C'est ainsi qu'à partir du XIIe siècle, le royaume de Pologne doit lutter contre les Chevaliers Teutoniques qui ont colonisé la Prusse et une partie de la Poméranie. Le pays atteint son apogée au XVe et au XVIe siècles sous la dynastie des Jagellons, après l'union Royaume de Pologne et du Grand-duché de Évolution du territoire de la Pologne entre 1000, Lituanie résultant en la République des Deux Nations, l'un des plus 1569, 1939 et 1945. grands pays d'Europe. Mais durant le XVIIe et surtout le XVIIIe, la République est engagée dans des nombreux conflits militaires qui lui font perdre une grande partie de sa superficie, notamment sous le coup de l'expansion de l'Empire russe. À la fin du XVIIIe siècle, après 3 partitions, la République des Deux Nations est partagée entre la Prusse, l'Autriche et l'Empire russe. La Pologne ne retrouve son indépendance qu'en 1918, mais le pays est à nouveau partagé durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale entre l'Allemagne nazie et l'Union Soviétique. À la fin de celle-ci, l'URSS conserve la partie orientale de la Pologne qui, en contrepartie, acquiert les territoires de la Poméranie, de la Prusse Orientale et de la Silésie, régions allemandes depuis plusieurs centaines années. -

The article contains the explication of the very important questions respecting the normalization of relations between the democratic Poland and the Catholic Church using the international agreement between the Holy See and the supreme authority of Polish State, called „concordat”. This event is consi dered in the historical context of political transformations from the communist totalitarian regime to liberal democracy and at the same time from atheistic state based on the hostile separation to the secular one based on the friendly separation. In complains the following issues: 1) notion and classification of concordats, 2) axiological and formal dimension of its conclusion between the Holy See and Poland (1993 –1998), 3) compliance Concordat’s with the Constitution of Poland, 4) the stabilization function of Concordat, 5) financial clauses. Key words: Holy See, Polish State, concordat, Constitution, Church-State relations The historical events are a good opportunity for the taking this subject into account. The last year (2013) twenty anniversary have passed since the signing of the Concordat between the Holy See and the Republic of Poland and fifteen years since its ratification 1. A few days ago we experienced the canonization by the Pope Francis the two of his predecessors: John XXIII and John Paul II, who contributed to the process of the building justice and peace between the nations in modern world, especially the relations between the Church and State in Poland. -

As representações dos Vikings são primeiro desenvolvidas dentro do espectro da história e da identidade polonesa contemporâneas. Depois, através de um breve balanço historiográfico e arqueológico da situação geopolítica da Era Viking na Polônia. E finalmente, os Vikings são abordados através do imaginário geral, mais apresentado pelas coleções de museus e reconstruções históricas na Polônia. The Viking's representations are first developed under the scope of contemporary Polish history and identity. Then through a quick historiographical and archaeological overview of the geopolitical situation of Viking Age Poland. Finally, the Vikings are approached through the general imaginary, mostly presented by museum collections and historical reconstructions in Poland. Potwierdzałyby to etnonimy północno-zachodnio-niemieckich Obodrzyców, saksońskich Dalemińców, meklemburskich Czrezpienian oraz nazwa krainy Serimunti, występująca na terenie Anhalt (H. K unstm ann 1981, 1983a, 1984a, 1984b). Migracja Słowian bałkańskich na północ wydaje się sięgać nawet nie tylko na północno-zachodnie i środkowe Niemcy, lecz również do północno-zachodniej Rusi, za czym przemawia etnonim Dulebowie oraz, co się da lej okaże,staroruskieetnonimyDerewlanie,Poloczanie i Wolynianie (H. K unst- mann 1984, 1985). Poniższe studium pozwala na wysunięcie hipotezy, że podobny trend można przyjąć także w odniesieniu do zaludnienia przez Sło wian wczesnośredniowiecznej Polski. Dalszym zagadnieniom związanym z dziejami polskiego wczesnego średniowiecza poświęcone będą kolejne prace badawcze. Jeden nazywa go Misaca, drugi Miseco. Wraz z Mieszkiem, synem Siemomysła „rozpoczyna się historycznie udokumentowana linia dynastyczna polskich władców określa nych jako ,duces’ ” (M. H ellm ann 1979, s. 906). Mieszko, książę Polski w la tach od ok. 960 do 992, miałby być już czwartym kolejnym panującym z dy nastii Piastów, jednak niczego nie wiemy o jego protoplastach (G. Labuda, w: SSS III, s. 248 i n.). Zaskakuje przy tym, że ten pierwszy przedstawiciel tzw. Piastów wszedł do historii, jak gdyby bez „prahistorii”, zdumiewa też, iż stało się to tak późno. Philip Earl Steele Homo religiosus : the phenomenon of Poland’s Mieszko I The full significance of Mieszko I’s decision to adopt Christianity in 966 has generally evaded Polish historiography. This is understandable regarding recent generations of Polish scholars, as the dogmas imposed during the country’s communist period had the effect of preserving the rationalist skepticism which Jacob Burckhardt, for instance, had applied in the mid-19 th c. toward understanding the conversion of Constantine the Great 1. That reductionist approach, often labeled “scientism” in Poland, dismisses the etiological power of religious beliefs and motives in history’s dynamics – and it was by and large rejected in Western scholarship roughly a century ago. 2 Yet as the medieval historian Richard Fletcher observed already a decade into the post-Cold War era, “This line of argument has held some appeal for historians of a Marxist inclination, of whom a few may still be encountered in remote places” 3. Polish historians might chuckle upon reading that – or cringe, as the case may be. For the shoe certainly fits. The structural realities of the Soviet bloc of course compounded this problem, inasmuch as they fostered the virtual autarky of national scholarly communities. Thus, until the demise of communism, Polish historians were importantly cut off from the community of Western scholars. Their ensuing lack of skill with Western languages only deepened the 1 J. Emigrating to America for economic reasons, many Poles began arriving in Indiana around 1850 through 1860. Their subsequent life and cultural development in South Bend is presented. The Polish community retained strong roots and identity to their Polish 'heritage into the 1960s when a decline in identity ensued. Recent emphasis is on cultural pluralism.
